Ophthalmological care in Cameroon is still being developed, although surgery for cataract and glaucoma is well established in several centres across the country. Our objective was to train the local doctors of the Presbyterian Eye Hospital (Acha) in Bafoussam and Douala to perform the most common oculoplasty procedures. The German Ophthalmological Society funded the project with a short-term lectureship of 2 weeks. We now present the results of the first two visits to Acha. We saw 96 oculoplastic patients and performed 44 surgeries. Most of the cases were nasolacrimal duct obstructions, cicatr

BACKGROUND: Shortage in nursing resource results from the combination of a lack of nurses, an increased patient volume and workload, and other factors. This seems to be a worldwide phenomenon, leading to multiple health care related challenges and a decreased quality of care, but is different in extent in high- vs. low-income countries. An international perspective can alleviate challenges to keep our patients safe through increasing our health workers' safety.
PURPOSE & METHOD: To exchange experiences with the shortage in nursing resource globally, an international online conference event wa

PROBLEM: As ethnic and cultural diversity of societies increases, healthcare professionals are required to provide culturally appropriate care for the communities they serve.
BACKGROUND: One way to prepare midwifery students for the diverse settings and women they will care for, is to provide short-term international study experience opportunities, to nurture the development of cultural sensitivity and humility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the higher education industry was challenged to identify innovative ways to develop student's cultural competences, without international travel. A midwi

BACKGROUND: University postgraduates' mobility towards, and outside the EU is continuously increasing, creating a competitive context in which maintaining a high life satisfaction (LS) is a public health challenge. However, the relationship between LS and its determinants among this population are under-documented. Our aims were to measure LS indicators of mobile postgraduates (Intra EU: Who pursue part of their studies in Europe; Outside EU: Who study outside of Europe) versus non-mobile (pursue their studies in Luxembourg), and to analyze the associations between LS and career attitudes, soc

The growing worldwide challenges of climate change, environmental degradation with biodiversity loss, and systemic inequities call for accessible, transformative, and impactful planetary health education that embraces a global perspective. However, traditional international learning experiences favor those with financial advantages, limiting equitable access to (planetary health) knowledge, intercultural collaboration competencies, and leadership opportunities. To address this challenge, the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht in the Netherlands and St. Luke's Medical Center College of Med

BACKGROUND: Skin and subcutaneous diseases affect up to 900 million individuals worldwide, ranking as the eighteenth leading cause of disability-adjusted life years internationally. The burden is particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to specialized dermatologic care is limited and the prevalence of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is high. With increasing globalization, preparing dermatology trainees to deliver care in diverse international settings has become essential.

Recovery Colleges (RCs) are community-based, co-produced educational initiatives that promote personal recovery, mental health, and well-being through collaborative learning grounded in recovery principles and adult education. Rather than functioning as clinical interventions, Recovery Colleges provide educational environments in which people with lived experience, professionals, relatives, and community members engage in shared learning and knowledge exchange. Despite their growing international implementation, many Recovery Colleges continue to rely on insecure, short-term funding arrangemen

BACKGROUND: Despite interest among North American orthopaedic residents to pursue rotations in resource-limited settings, little is known regarding resident motivations and impact on host surgeons.
METHODS: Surveys were distributed to North American orthopaedic surgeons and trainees who participated in international rotations during residency to assess motivations for participation and to orthopaedic surgeons at partnering low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions to assess impact of visiting trainees.
RESULTS: Responses were received from 136 North American resident rotators and 51

This study determines the extent to which admissions criteria and cultural norms predict the success of a foreign-trained dentist in a United States dental educational program. Correlation and regression tests were applied to an eleven-year period from 1994 to 2004 of retrospective admissions data for 144 International Dental Studies Program students. Five cultural norms were derived from the collective cultural dimensions of a scholarly work of validated multinational surveys by Geert Hofstede. These five cultural norms are Power Distance (degree of inequality between "haves" and "have-nots"

An outbreak of rubella occurred among visiting German troops involved in a combined military exercise at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in April 1995. Public health and military operational concerns centered on the significant contact the German soldiers had had with host battalion dependents and the impact of the outbreak on the exercise. Ten of the 120 German soldiers were found to be nonimmune; six of these soldiers developed clinical rubella. The four nonimmune soldiers who did not develop skin rashes had received serum immune globulin within 12 hours of identification of the index case. The
