First Report of Alveolar Hydatid Disease (Echinococcus multilocularis) in a Golden Jackal (Canis aureus).

BACKGROUND: Alveolar hydatid disease caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasitic disease present in the northern hemisphere. Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasite of canid and felid carnivores as definitive hosts, and small mammals, particularly rodents as intermediate hosts. Other animal species and humans can be aberrant intermediate hosts for this parasite. It is known that besides acting as definitive hosts, domestic dogs can rarely become infected with the larval form of E. multilocularis and develop alveolar echinococcosis; however, a role of wild canids as aber

The golden jackal (Canis aureus): A new host for Echinococcus multilocularis and Trichinella britovi in Switzerland.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a wild canid new to Switzerland. It is an officially monitored species and all deceased individuals are submitted for post-mortem examination to collect baseline health data. This includes parasitological examinations, with an emphasis on zoonotic, reportable infections, such as those caused by Trichinella spp. or Echinococcus spp. From 2016 to 2021, five golden jackals originating from four Swiss cantons were submitted for full post-mortem examination. In one case only organ samples were available, and therefore parasitological examination was not possible.

Levels of infection of intestinal helminth species in the golden jackal Canis aureus from Serbia.

During the past decade, golden jackal populations have substantially increased, yet little is known of their potential for transmitting parasites within animal and human hosts. In the present study, between 2005 and 2010, 447 jackals from six localities in Serbia were examined for intestinal parasites. Two species of trematodes (Alaria alata, Pseudamphistomum truncatum), three nematodes (Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Gongylonema sp.), and seven cestodes (Taenia pisiformis, Taenia hydatigena, Multiceps multiceps, Multiceps serialis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Mesocestoides litteratus, Dipyl

Is golden jackal (Canis aureus) the most important indicator species of Trichinella infection in Croatia?

Epidemiologic monitoring of wild animals is always an important step in defining potential zoonoses that can threaten humans. Particular emphasis should be given to those zoonotic agents permanently cycling within wild animal populations and represent a permanent reservoir for other wild or domesticated animals that can be direct sources of disease for humans. In Croatia, there are two European jackal populations: the Dalmatian population (DP) that has been inhabiting the islands and coastal area along the Adriatic Sea since medieval times, and the South East European population (SEEP) that is

A large-scale study of the Trichinella genus in the golden jackal (Canis aureus) population in Serbia.

Over the last decades the golden jackal (Canis aureus) has significantly expanded its range throughout Southeast and Central Europe, and the Balkan Peninsula is considered to be a core area of the species distribution in this part of the range. Due to its increasing number, ability of long distance movement through a wide range of landscapes and opportunistic feeding habits, the golden jackal may represent an important reservoir and transmitter of a variety of zoonotic agents, including parasites. The Balkans, Serbia included, remain an endemic area for various zoonotic parasites including Tri

Angiostrongylus vasorum in golden jackals (Canis aureus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Northern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this study, we conducted post-mortem examinations of golden jackals (Canis aureus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the northern region of the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) to detect the presence of Angiostrongylus vasorum. An epidemiological survey was conducted in the densest golden jackal population in the country. Over two time intervals, we examined a total of 30 jackals and 16 foxes. The presence of A. vasorum was confirmed in two jackals (6.6%) and one fox (6.25%). These findings strongly suggest that the spread of A. vasorum can be facilitated by the active expansion

TRICHINELLA INFECTIONS IN RED FOXES (VULPES VULPES) AND GOLDEN JACKALS (CANIS AUREUS) IN SIX DISTRICTS OF SERBIA.

Wild animals, including red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and golden jackals (Canis aureus), are the most important reservoirs of Trichinella spp. Although the red fox is considered one of the main reservoirs of Trichinella spp. in Europe, only a few animals have been examined in Serbia. The present study assessed Trichinella spp. infection in red foxes and golden jackals from the six districts in Serbia. Thirty-seven carcasses of red foxes and 13 carcasses of golden jackals shot during the official hunting season were examined. Larvae of Trichinella spp. were detected in 13 (35%) of 37 red foxes and

THE INCIDENCE OF JACKAL BITES AND INJURIES IN THE ZAGREB ANTI RABIES CLINIC DURING THE 1995-2014 PERIOD.

Rabies is a zoonotic disease (a disease transmitted to humans from animals) that is caused by a virus. The disease affects domestic and wild animals, and is spread to people through close contact with infectious material, usually saliva, via bites or scratches. Rabies is present on all continents with the exception of Antarctica, but more than 95% of human deaths occur in Asia and Africa. Once the symptoms of the disease have developed, rabies is nearly always fatal. People are usually infected following deep bite or scratch by an infected animal. Dogs are the main host and transmitter of rabi

Dirofilaria repens believed to be D. immitis: An erratic localization case in a golden jackal (Canis aureus).

Dirofilariosis is a widespread mosquito-borne disease that primarily affects dogs, the main reservoir, but it can also infect other mammalian hosts. Dirofilaria immitis is the causative agent of a cardiopulmonary disease in dogs, whereas Dirofilaria repens typically inhabits subcutaneous tissues and is often associated with subclinical infections. Nevertheless, D. repens shows a greater tendency for aberrant localization in atypical anatomical sites. We report a rare case of cardiac localization of D. repens in a golden jackal from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Northeastern Italy. The gold

First molecular and histopathological evidence of Mesocestoides Vogae in a golden jackal in Caspian sea littoral of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Mesocestoides vogae is a pathogenic cyclophyllidean cestode with a complex three-host lifecycle. While reports of Mesocestoides spp. in wild carnivores exist globally, molecular confirmation in golden jackals (Canis aureus) from the Middle East remains scarce. METHODS: In June 2024, a road-killed male golden jackal was recovered from the Caspian Sea littoral of Iran. Necropsy revealed peritoneal cysts consistent with tetrathyridia. Histopathological evaluation using Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) staining confirmed features characteristic of Mesocestoides spp. larvae. For molecular id

The golden jackal (Canis aureus): interaction of fur and fecal microbiota, host genetics and animal traits.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid widely distributed across Europe and the Mediterranean region. As a synanthropic species, it often inhabits areas near human settlements and is associated with zoonotic diseases such as rabies. This study characterizes the golden jackal’s fur microbiota and examines its interactions with host traits, fecal microbiota, host genetics and environmental factors. Analysis of the 16S rRNA amplicons indicated that the golden jackal fur microbiota is dominated by four bacteria phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota)

Serological Survey of SARS-CoV-2 in Wild Canids in Serbia: First Report in Red Foxes and Golden Jackals.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there has been growing interest in investigating the transmission routes of SARS-CoV-2 and identifying the potential reservoirs in wildlife. To date, the virus has been detected in a wide range of wildlife animals. SARS-CoV-2 has also been demonstrated to have the ability to infect dogs, raising concerns that other carnivores, such as free-living canids, might serve as a potential source of infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of specific IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in golden jackals (Canis aureus) and red foxes (Vulpes

[Leishmania infantum MON-1 isolated from a golden jackal (Canis aureus) in Grande Kabylie (Algeria)].

In the north of Algeria, Leishmania infantum is responsible for two clinical forms of leishmaniasis: visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis, for which dogs are the only proven reservoir host. In this study, the authors report, for the first time, the isolation of L. infantum from a golden jackal (Canis aureus) trapped in the Illoulen ou Malou region (Grande Kabylie). Two isolates were thus obtained from bone marrow and spleen and were identified by starch gel isoenzyme electrophoresis as L. infantum MON-1, the widespread zymodeme in the north of the country. Leishmania parasites have also been d

Antibody response to Raboral VR-G® oral rabies vaccine in captive and free-ranging black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas).

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that remains endemic in large parts of southern Africa because of its persistence in wildlife and domestic dog vectors. The black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) is primarily the wildlife vector responsible for rabies outbreaks in northern parts of South Africa. Two trials were carried out to investigate antibody responses to the oral rabies vaccine Raboral V-RG® in black-backed jackals under captive and free-ranging conditions. In captive jackals 10/12 (83%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 52% - 98%), seroconverted after single oral vaccination. Nine captive jackal

Molecular epidemiology of rabies: focus on domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) and black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) from northern South Africa.

Phylogenetic relationships of rabies viruses recovered from black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in northern South Africa were investigated to determine whether the black-backed jackal is an emerging maintenance host species for rabies in this region. A panel of 123 rabies viruses obtained from the two host species between 1980 and 2006 were characterised by nucleotide sequencing of the cytoplasmic domain of the glycoprotein gene and the non-coding G-L intergenic region. Through phylogenetic analysis a viral cluster specific to black-backed jackals and sp

Competition between obligate and facultative scavengers and infection: vulture-jackal-anthrax dynamics in Etosha National Park.

Different species of scavengers may compete for the same food in an ecosystem. This case study considers the competition between jackals and vultures in Etosha National Park in Namibia. While jackals are facultative scavengers, able to hunt for food if necessary, vultures are obligate scavengers wholly dependent on carcasses of animals like zebras for persistence. This competition may be further affected by outbreaks of infections such as anthrax, which temporarily increase the number of carcasses but lower the zebra population, acting in some ways as a third competitor. We use a dynamical sys
