Fifty years before a report on the complete bitemporal lobectomy syndrome in primates, known as the Klüver-Bucy syndrome, was published, 2 talented investigators working at the University College in London, England-neurologist Sanger Brown and physiologist Edward Schäfer-also made this discovery. The title of their work was "An investigation into the functions of the occipital and temporal lobes of the monkey's brain," and it involved excisional brain surgery in 12 monkeys. They were particularly interested in the then-disputed primary cortical locations relating to vision and hearing. However

Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) comprises a set of neurobehavioral symptoms with psychic blindness, hypersexuality, disinhibition, hyperorality, and hypermetamorphosis that were originally observed after bilateral lobectomy in Rhesus monkeys. We investigated two siblings with KBS from a consanguineous family by whole-exome sequencing and autozygosity mapping. We detected a homozygous variant in the heparan-α-glucosaminidase-N-acetyltransferase gene (HGSNAT; c.518G>A, p.(G173D), NCBI ClinVar RCV000239404.1), which segregated with the phenotype. Disease-causing variants in this gene are known to be a

OBJECTIVE: To present a left-handed patient who had an acute encephalopathy, possibly of viral etiology, followed by remote and recent memory loss, several types of apraxia and emotional disturbance, without any motor abnormalities. He had cerebral lesions that involved both temporal lobes and other brain regions. All features corresponded to the Klüver-Bucy syndrome. After a seven year follow-up, no improvement of the neurological and neuroradiological, mainly by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features was observed.
CASE REPORT: A 14 year-old left-handed boy suffered sudden onset of fever

Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a heterogeneous group of immune-mediated disorders of the central nervous system characterized by neuropsychiatric symptoms, seizures, cognitive decline, and movement abnormalities. Timely recognition and initiation of immunotherapy are critical to improving outcomes. We report three cases of AE presenting with varied clinical phenotypes from the Neurology department of Madras Medical College. The first, a 44-year-old male, presented with altered sensorium, action tremor, and myokymia, and was diagnosed with LGI1 and CASPR2 antibody-positive AE. The second, a 16

Sexual behavior changes as well as depression, anxiety, and organic mood/personality disorders have been reported in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients before and after epilepsy surgery. The authors describe a 14-year-old girl with symptoms of excessive masturbation in inappropriate places, social withdrawal, irritability, aggressive behavior, and crying spells after selective amygdalohippocampectomy for medically intractable TLE with hippocampal sclerosis. Since the family members felt extremely embarrassed, they were upset and angry with the patient which, in turn, increased her depressiv

INTRODUCTION: Pathologies of the amygdala and the hippocampus have been argued to be critically involved in autism as well as in sadomasochism. In line with Kluver and Bucy syndrome, clinical observations, animal models and a few case reports emphasize that temporal brain changes are important for the etiopathogenesis of sexual deviant behaviour. In particular, the amygdalohippocampal region has been linked to hypersexuality, transvestitism and fetishism. While cases and studies are rare, the impact of amygdalohippocampal changes in criminal behaviour remains unclear so far.

The symptoms of Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) include hyperorality, hypersexuality, visual agnosia, hypermetamorphosis and decreased motor or vocal reaction to fear- or anger-provoking stimuli. This syndrome has been associated with a wide variety of neurodegenerative disorders, as well as traumatic, non-traumatic and infectious brain injuries. We report an 11-year-old boy who developed a fairly classical presentation of KBS, presumably in the setting of post-infectious acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). This patient's presentation is a reminder of this rare syndrome and extends the cli

We report five patients with a stereotyped clinical syndrome characterized by fluent dysphasia with severe anomia, reduced vocabulary and prominent impairment of single-word comprehension, progressing to a stage of virtually complete dissolution of the semantic components of language. A marked reduction in the ability to generate exemplars from restricted semantic categories (e.g. animals, vehicles, etc.) was a consistent and early feature. Tests of semantic memory demonstrated a radically impoverished knowledge about a range of living and man-made items. In contrast, phonology and grammar of

Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a rare behavioral phenotype described in monkeys and humans that appears most often after bilateral temporal damage. The main features of KBS are compulsion to examine objects orally, increased sexual activity, placidity, hypermetamorphosis, visual agnosia, and amnesia. Cases in children are scarce, and the most frequently reported etiology is herpes encephalitis. Hyperorality (90%), hypersexuality (82%), and epilepsy (70%) were the most common features of the 51 cases reported in the literature to date. Carbamazepine, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI

AIM: Klüver-Bucy syndrome was described in the fifties of the 20th century as a group of neuropsychological symptoms, such as visual agnosia, "oral" tendency, hypermetamorphosis, changes in behaviour, hyper-sexuality (homo-, hetero-, autosexuality) and changes in dietary habits (anorexia, bulimia) that may develop in humans after bilateral damage or dysfunction of the medial temporal lobes. The cause of Klüver-Bucy syndrome may be an injury, central nervous system infection, especially herpetic, Pick disease, temporal epilepsy and paraneoplastic encephalopathy. The condition is very rare in ch

We report 3 patients aged 3 - 4 years who presented with impaired consciousness and status epilepticus or a cluster of seizures, followed by transient involuntary movements and limbic dysfunction in the recovery phase. In all the patients, the involuntary movements were observed mainly on the left side and consisted of dystonia, athetosis, chorea, facial myoclonus, and oral dyskinesia. The patients also showed stereotypic movement, oral tendency, visual agnosia, and emotional disturbance, which suggested limbic dysfunction resembling Klüver-Bucy syndrome. Methotrexate causes several biochemical changes that impact the nervous system. The neurotoxicity usually affects the cerebral white matter, causing a leukoencephalopathy that can be chronic and progressive with cognitive decline. A 15-year-old male developed olfactory seizures and behavioral abnormalities (hypersexuality, placidity, and memory disturbances) compatible with partial Klüver-Bucy syndrome after treatment for central nervous system leukemia with intraventricular methotrexate. A magnetic resonance imaging study revealed evidence of white matter disease affecting both temporal lobes

BACKGROUND: Several case series and reports describe paraphilia as occurring after brain damage, mostly in the frontal lobes and diencephalic structures. Hypersexuality and paraphilic behaviors are also documented in a variety of other neurologic disorders, (e.g., Kluver Bucy syndrome, and more rarely in multiple sclerosis). In multiple sclerosis, hypersexual behavior and paraphilias have been associated with various focal brain lesions in the frontal and temporal lesions when inflammatory demyelination involves the hypothalamus and septal regions.

Organic brain disturbances particularly related to frontal cortex structures and subcortical areas including the basal ganglia may play a role in behavioral disinhibition disorders. Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), which is one of the better knowns of these syndromes, includes hyperorality, visual agnosia, and hypersexuality, has been reported to occur after temporal lobe and amygdala lesions; however, several patients who had focal lesions in areas other than the temporal cortex and amygdala have been reported to present partial KBS symptoms. Nucleus lentiformis refers to a large portion of the ba

Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a rare clinical presentation following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Symptoms include visual agnosia, placidity, hyperorality, sexual hyperactivity, changes in dietary behavior, and hypermetamorphosis. The purpose of this article was to identify and synthesize the available evidence from case reports and case series on the treatment profile of KBS among adolescents and adults after TBI. Four bibliographic databases (MEDLINE OVID, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and SCOPUS) were searched for relevant literature. No date or language restrictions were applied. All case reports con

In this paper, an overview of the studies relating naming to the uncinate fasciculus is reported. With the introduction of contemporary neuroimaging techniques, namely of diffusion tensor imaging, white matter tracts have been investigated more thoroughly and possible changes in the uncinate fasciculus integrity have been correlated to different neuropsychological deficits. Although previous research has proposed a role of the left uncinate fasciculus on action and object naming or in semantic processing, a more recent study has suggested that naming famous people could be the most relevant ta

INTRODUCTION: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the leading cause of sporadic fatal encephalitis, typically presenting with temporal lobe abnormalities. It usually manifests as fever, headache, seizure, altered sensorium, and focal neurological deficit. Hyperphagia as a sole complication of HSV-1 encephalitis is a rare presentation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 25-year-old woman with a 10-day history of fever, headache, and vomiting, progressing to confusion, visual hallucinations, and drowsiness. She had a history of meningoencephalitis at age 8 and well-controlled focal seizures. Upo

BACKGROUND: A variety of ictal automatisms with strong emotional elements have been described. Ictal kissing has not been well characterized and may provide useful clinical information and insight into the mechanisms of stereotyped ictal behaviour.
METHODS: Three of 220 patients (1.4%) admitted for video EEG monitoring between 7/2006 and 6/2009 with ictal kissing were identified. Clinical, neurophysiological and imaging data were reviewed and correlated.
RESULTS: All patients were right-handed women with a longstanding history and findings consistent with right temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) with bilateral transections of the anterior temporal stem, amygdala and fornix were unable to relearn a 2-choice object discrimination first learnt prior to surgery, and were very severely impaired at relearning a concurrent object discrimination task which they had learnt and relearnt prior to surgery, indicating that they had a dense retrograde amnesia. They also had difficulty learning new visual object discriminations but were only mildly impaired on spatial learning. When tested on new learning of concurrent discriminations 8 to 10 weeks after surgery
