[Is cochlear processing involved in language disorders?].

INTRODUCTION: Otoacoustic emissions are evidence of the existence of an active process in the cochlea, and the motility of the outer hair cells means that they can change the cochlear mechanical response. We believe that incorrect processing of the sounds of language in the cochlea can result in impaired language processes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the patient record; neurological, visual and auditory examination; Weschler intelligence scale; initial language test (ILT); brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and transient otoacoustic emissions. The results of the

[Speech and language development disorders in children].

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. [Neurobiological bases of language and its disorders].

AIMS: The purpose of this study is to offer an update on the anatomofunctional bases of language and the theories that explain its normal and pathological development. METHOD: Language is a clear example of one of the higher functions of the brain, the development of which is carried out, on the one hand, in a genetically determined anatomofunctional structure and, on the other hand, by the verbal stimulus provided by the environment. Several systems and subsystems are at play within the anatomofunctional structure and these operate in series and in parallel. A large amount of the knowledge w

Hand/wrist disorders among sign language communicators.

The study assessed the frequency of self-reported hand/wrist problems among sign language communicators, including interpreters, deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals, and educators. Comparisons were also made between sign language communicators and the general population regarding the frequency of medically diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome. A survey was mailed to attendees of a national conference that focused on the quality of postsecondary educational opportunities for students with hearing deficits. Fifty-nine percent of 184 respondents reported experiencing hand/wrist problems. Twenty-six p

Specific developmental disorders. The language-learning continuum.

The goal of this article is to inform and educate those who work with children who present with language-learning disorders about phonologic processing deficits, because this area has been shown to have a significant impact on children and adults who exhibit reading disabilities. Mental health professionals who work with children with reading problems need to be aware of what is known about this source of reading disorders and the implications of this knowledge for prevention and treatment. Advocating for appropriate instruction for children with reading problems is an important role mental he

Segregation analysis of speech and language disorders.

Complex segregation analysis was performed on pedigrees ascertained through 45 probands (26 males, 19 females) with a history of preschool speech and language disorders. Hypotheses concerning mode of inheritance were tested using the POINTER segregation analysis program. Although there is strong evidence for familial transmission of this trait, we were unable to distinguish between a major gene and multifactorial transmission model using likelihood-ratio chi-square tests. Future studies with quantitative measures of speech and language disorders are needed to resolve the issue of mode of inher

The impacts of language background and language-related disorders in auditory processing assessment.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of language background and language-related disorders (LRDs--dyslexia and/or language impairment) on performance in English speech and nonspeech tests of auditory processing (AP) commonly used in the clinic. METHOD: A clinical database concerning 133 multilingual children (mostly with English as an additional language) and 71 monolingual children (7- to 12-year-old native English speakers) with listening concerns was analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Language background had no significant effect on the 3 nonspeech AP tests, but the multilingual group performed

[Language development disorders--studies of preschool children of the Leipzig special language school].

Children with severe speech disorders were examined to determine the causes of their abnormal speech development. Thirty-seven preschool and school-age children were followed up and results compared. All children had low intelligence quotients, with most of the children coming from low social backgrounds. However, both of these factors (intelligence and low social background) had no influence on the improvement of speech levels after therapy. Two-thirds of the children with moderate conductive hearing losses showed improvement after therapy, so that the effect of this hearing loss was believed

Structural language profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder and developmental language disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) are both associated with language difficulties, yet the extent to which they share common structural language profiles remains unclear. Previous research has reported both overlap and divergence across phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic, and narrative domains, creating challenges for differential diagnosis and intervention planning. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence comparing structural language abilities in children with ASD and DLD and to identify areas of converg

Who are Adults with Developmental Language Disorder? Profiles from the Engage with Developmental Language Disorder Project.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although developmental language disorder (DLD) is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental condition, its presentation in adulthood has received scant research and clinical attention. Several longitudinal studies have demonstrated that poor language ability may be negatively associated with wider life factors in adulthood. Moreover, although a growing body of qualitative evidence illustrates the lived experience of adults with DLD, more quantitative research on this subject is needed, which may guide evidence-informed assessment and support practices for adults. In this short report

A model for collaborative service delivery for students with language-learning disorders in the public schools. Committee on Language Learning Disorders American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Collaborative service delivery can augment traditional methods for serving students with language-learning disorders in the public schools. In collaborative service delivery, the speech-language pathologist is an integral member of a transdisciplinary team consisting of educators, parents, and the student. Team members collaborate to formulate a single educational program for each student. The team devises all treatment goals, assessment methods, intervention procedures, and documentation systems to enhance the student's academic and social functioning in the school environment. Language impairment and dyslexia genes influence language skills in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Language and communication development is a complex process influenced by numerous environmental and genetic factors. Many neurodevelopment disorders include deficits in language and communication skills in their diagnostic criteria, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), language impairment (LI), and dyslexia. These disorders are polygenic and complex with a significant genetic component contributing to each. The similarity of language phenotypes and comorbidity of these disorders suggest that they may share genetic contributors. To test this, we examined the association of genes previous

Language cannot be reduced to biology: perspectives from neuro-developmental disorders affecting language learning.

The study of language knowledge guided by a purely biological perspective prioritizes the study of syntax. The essential process of syntax is recursion--the ability to generate an infinite array of expressions from a limited set of elements. Researchers working within the biological perspective argue that this ability is possible only because of an innately specified genetic makeup that is specific to human beings. Such a view of language knowledge may be fully justified in discussions on biolinguistics, and in evolutionary biology. However, it is grossly inadequate in understanding language-l

Developmental disorders of language and literacy: special issue.

Language and literacy are cognitive skills of exceptional complexity. It is therefore not surprising that they are at risk of impairment either during development or as a result of damage (e.g. stroke) later in life. Impaired language and literacy can arise from a general learning impairment. However, two developmental disorders, specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia, which affect oral and written language, respectively, are 'specific' in that they are not part of a more general learning difficulty. SLI and dyslexia each affect 5-10% of the general population, and they are the focus

Unravelling neurogenetic networks implicated in developmental language disorders.

Childhood syndromes disturbing language development are common and display high degrees of heritability. In most cases, the underlying genetic architecture is likely to be complex, involving multiple chromosomal loci and substantial heterogeneity, which makes it difficult to track down the crucial genomic risk factors. Investigation of rare Mendelian phenotypes offers a complementary route for unravelling key neurogenetic pathways. The value of this approach is illustrated by the discovery that heterozygous FOXP2 (where FOX is forkhead box) mutations cause an unusual monogenic disorder, charac

Comorbidity of auditory processing, language, and reading disorders.

PURPOSE: The authors assessed comorbidity of auditory processing disorder (APD), language impairment (LI), and reading disorder (RD) in school-age children. METHOD: Children (N = 68) with suspected APD and nonverbal IQ standard scores of 80 or more were assessed using auditory, language, reading, attention, and memory measures. Auditory processing tests included the Frequency Pattern Test (FPT; F. E. Musiek, 1994; D. Noffsinger, R. H. Wilson, & F. E. Musiek, 1994); the Dichotic Digit Test Version 2 (DDT; F. E. Brain abnormalities in language disorders and in autism.

It has been speculated that autism and specific language impairment share common underlying neural substrates because of the overlap in language impairment issues and evidence suggesting parallels in other domains and implying a possible shared genetic risk. Anatomically the two sets of disorders have generally been studied using different methodologies, but when identical methodologies have been used substantial similarities have been noted. Functionally there is a growing body of literature suggesting sensory perception abnormalities that have parallels in both conditions and that may be ups
