OBJECTIVE: To report morphologic findings associated with laryngoplasty failure in a horse.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report.
ANIMALS: A 9-year-old Thoroughbred cross gelding.
METHODS: Necropsy and histopathology were performed on a horse that died peracutely during anesthetic recovery after correction of a right dorsal displacement of the ascending colon. Three weeks earlier the horse had left laryngoplasty and ventriculocordectomy.
RESULTS: Dissection of the larynx revealed that the laryngoplasty suture had pulled through the muscular process of the left arytenoid cartilage, which appeared

Injection laryngoplasty is done based on the pathologic condition of the larynx. Autologous fat was harvested and endolaryngeal microsurgery conducted for injection laryngoplasty under general anesthesia. For glottic incompetence caused by bilateral atrophy of vocal fold mucosa lamina propria, autologous fat was injected into vocal fold mucosa and into the muscle just below mucosa. For glottic incompetence with a unilateral midcord gap caused by unilateral atrophy of the vocalis muscle, fat was injected into the thyroarytenoid muscle at the membranous portion of the vocal fold. In a patient wi

Medialization laryngoplasty has become a routine procedure for cases of unilateral vocal fold paralysis. In certain clinical situations, it may become desirable to reverse the procedure and remove the implant. This process was studied experimentally in eight dogs in a chronic model of induced canine phonation. A silicone polymer implant was inserted to medialize one normal vocal fold for a period of 1 month, after which it was removed. Motion of the cricoarytenoid (CA) joint and induced phonation were studied weekly while the implant was in place, and for another month following implant remova

Using fluoroscopic techniques and videotape recordings, a study of normal deglutition was made in 2 ponies. Paryngeal function was studied at intervals after laryngoplasty on 1 animal and after a sham technique on the other. Two clinical cases of laryngeal paralysis, which had been treated by laryngoplasty, were also examined. In the 2 experimental ponies, liquid food passed into the lower respiratory tract post-operatively. One of the clinical cases appeared to swallow solid food normally, but some food material entered the larynx of the other horse. It is suggested that pharyngeal dysfunctio

A 61-year-old male with a 24-year history of unilateral vocal fold paralysis was evaluated by a speech-language pathologist and an otolaryngologist for 52 weeks following Teflon injection. Tape recordings of the patient's voice were obtained one week prior to and one, eight, 20, and 52 weeks subsequent to Teflon injection. The recorded samples were presented in the backward-play mode to a panel of speech-language pathology graduate students to obtain ratings of the degree of hoarseness, roughness, and pleasantness. Results of the perceptual aspect of this study revealed a general reduction in

BACKGROUND: Medialization laryngoplasty (ML) is a commonly performed procedure for vocal fold motion impairment with glottic incompetence. Although implant extrusion is a well-known risk of ML, management of this complication is rarely mentioned in the literature. The aim of this study was to review our experience with endoscopic implant retrieval for a group of patients with extruding ML implants.
METHODS: All patients identified in our institution from January 1989 through August 2004 with a history of ML and extruded implants were identified. Case management was reviewed, including informa

Epiglottic laryngoplasty is technically feasible as a one-stage procedure with excellent functional results. Although the Kambic-Sedlacek-Tucker (K-S-T) technique of glottic reconstruction offers early extubation with an adequate airway, a subsequent wide neoglottis may increase the chance of aspiration and a poor voice. To better restore the laryngeal functions of closure and phonation, we made some modifications on the original K-S-T technique as follows: (1) One of the lateral margins of the epiglottis with the aryepiglottic fold is sutured to the arytenoid region of the cricoid rather than

OBJECTIVE: Nanofat is fat emulsified into micron-sized particles. Unlike microfat, nanofat increases the release of adipose-derived stem cells by destroying lipocytes. This study evaluated whether nanofat injection laryngoplasty alone leads to lasting bulking and sustained long-term voice improvement.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with glottal insufficiency due to atrophy, paresis, or scarring who underwent operative (n = 13) or office-based (n = 18) nanofat injection laryngoplasty. The average injected fat volume was 0.5 mL per side. Median follow-up was 12 ± 4 months. Strobo

PURPOSE: Volume injected for glottic insufficiency is paramount in achieving desired outcome. Factors that determine the required volume have not been thoroughly investigated and may correlate with outcome. The first objective of this investigation was to evaluate the association between injectable volume and various parameters, including lifestyle characteristics, pre-procedural factors, and voice measures, while the second aim assessed the correlation of volume to clinical outcomes in patients who underwent injection laryngoplasty.
METHODS: For the first objective, a one-way ANOVA and univa

OBJECTIVE: Injection laryngoplasty (IL) has become a mainstay in the treatment of unilateral vocal fold paralysis due to technical ease and avoidance of open surgery. The duration of IL effect depends on the injected material and has not been defined clearly. We aimed to define the effective duration of IL and to investigate the associated factors.
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients who underwent IL for unilateral vocal fold paralysis were included. IL was performed using a cricothyroid membrane approach under local anesthesia. During follow-up, in cases that developed subjective hoarseness with ob

The injection of polydimethylsiloxane for medialization of the vocal folds has been used for more than 15 years with satisfactory long-term results. However there is little in the literature with regard to the complications and their treatment. We present 2 cases (1 unilateral laryngeal paralysis and 1 bilateral vocal fold atrophy) with unsatisfactory results after PDMS injection. The first case had chronic granulomatous inflammation induced by the PDMS and the second a periprothetic fibrotic reaction causing cordal rigidity. A superior cordotomy and extraction of the PDMS was performed in the
