Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl (LMBB) syndrome is a symptom complex that usually presents with retinitis pigmentosa, poly- or syndactyly, mental retardation, obesity and hypogenitalism. Cotard's syndrome is a state in which the central symptom is a delusion of negation. The case reported here is a combination of these two rare conditions.

Mental retardation, hypogonadism, obesity, and abnormal blood sugar regulation were common findings in two siblings. In addition, the 17-year-old female patient showed short stature, muscular hypotonia in infancy, and small hands with tapering fingers suggesting Prader-Willi syndrome, and the 12-year-old male patient showed retinitis pigmentosa, normal height, and normal muscular tonicity suggesting Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome, though polydactyly was absent. Possible consideration was discussed.

PURPOSE: To describe the ocular and refractive findings in patients with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome were evaluated retrospectively. All children underwent complete ophthalmologic examination.
RESULTS: Of the patients evaluated, 88.2% had an ocular or refractive finding, 58.8% had myopia (degenerative in three cases), 52.9% had astigmatism, 11.7% had an-isometropia, 17.6% had strabismus, 11.7% had retinitis pigmentosa, 5.9% had keratoconus, 5.9% had optic atrophy, and 5.9% had nystagmus.
CONCLUSION: Early and regular ophthalmol

Previous reports have described the diversity of the phenotypic expression of the Laurence-Moon and Bardet-Biedl syndrome. This report describes two brothers whose features include the previously unreported defect of oligodontia in addition to retinitis pigmentosa, hypogenitalism, strabismus, short stature, and developmental delay. The reports over the last century have emphasized the varied expression from family to family and even differences among members of the same family. This report broadens the already pleomorphic nature of this syndrome.

The cases of two children affected from LMBB syndrome are reported. The first child was six years old, suffering from obesity and mild mental retardation; the other was two years old, suffering from hexadactyly and obesity. In both children the suspected diagnosis of LMBB syndrome was verified by the electroetinographic evidence of a tapetoretinal degeneration although the fundi were atypical. A third child, the younger brother of the second case, presented an atypical pigmentation of the retina and the electroretinographic changes of a tapeto-retinal degeneration. Since tapeto-retinal degener

This report describes a case of Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome identified in a 24-month-old boy. Significant renal involvement was present with right-sided vesicoureteral reflux, cystocele, urinary tract infections, and growth arrest of the right kidney. After the development of hypertension a left renal biopsy was performed to determine if bilateral renal disease was present. Histopathological and ultrastructural changes in the left kidney are described. These changes appear to be unrelated to pyelonephritis or hypertension and to be most consistent with the nephropathy of Laurence-Moon-Biedl s

Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet Syndrome is a rare hereditary autosomal recessive disease. It is clinically characterised by a pentad of congenital defects e.g. poly or syndactyly, mental retardation, obesity, hypogenitalism and retinitis pigmentosa. Five cases of the syndrome with additional ENT features are presented. The salient features of the condition are discussed in the light of available literatures.

Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome (LMBBS), a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, results from consanguineous marriage. It is a congenital ciliopathy manifesting with primary and secondary characteristics. Primary clinical features include rod and cone dystrophy, polydactyly, central obesity, genital abnormalities, and mental retardation, often presenting as poor schooling skills. Secondary clinical features include developmental delay, speech deficit, brachydactyly/syndactyly, dental defects, ataxia, olfactory deficit, diabetes mellitus (DM), and congenital heart disease. Herein, we r

To determine the interfamilial and intrafamilial variation in the expression of the Bardet-Biedl syndrome (a form of Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome), we looked for the five recognized features of the disorder (retinal dystrophy, obesity, polydactyly, mental retardation, and hypogonadism), plus possible renal manifestations, in some or all of 32 patients with this disorder. All 28 patients examined had severe retinal dystrophy, but only 2 had typical retinitis pigmentosa. Polydactyly was present in 18 of 31 patients, but syndactyly, brachydactyly, or both were present in all. Obesity was present

We report five patients with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome (LMBBS) who had renal involvement. Intravenous pyelography showed bilateral or unilateral calyceal clubbing and blunting in all patients. In addition, one patient had a parapelvic cyst in the left kidney and another had bilateral lobulated renal outlines of the fetal type. One patient had a urinary concentrating defect and two patients showed increased fractional sodium excretion. Estimated tubular phosphate reabsorption values were in normal limits in all of five patients. No patient had a urine acidification defect, proteinuria

The pathogenesis of hypogonadism and hypogenitalism was investigated in a male patient with the complete form of the Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome. Synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone induced an increase in serum luteinizing hormone levels from 16.5 mIU/ml to 19.3 mIU/ml and in follicle-stimulating hormone levels from 18.5 mIU/ml to 25.9 mIU/ml. Serum testosterone levels were normal and did not rise after stimulation with human chorionic gonadotropin. The administration of thyrotropin-releasing hormone resulted in an increase in serum thyrotropin levels from 9.0 microU/ml to 12.0 mi

BACKGROUND: Oliver-McFarlane syndrome is characterised by trichomegaly, congenital hypopituitarism and retinal degeneration with choroidal atrophy. Laurence-Moon syndrome presents similarly, though with progressive spinocerebellar ataxia and spastic paraplegia and without trichomegaly. Both recessively inherited disorders have no known genetic cause.
METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify the genetic causes of these disorders. Mutations were functionally validated in zebrafish pnpla6 morphants. Embryonic expression was evaluated via in situ hybridisation in human embryonic …

Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome represents a very rare indication for kidney transplantation. Previous reports mention only pediatric organ recipients with this diagnosis. We present the case of a Caucasian male patient who underwent a cadaveric renal transplantation at the age of 57 years. Our patient had an uneventful immediate postoperative course; however, 4 months after the operation he suffered pneumonia and cytomegalovirus infection. He recovered fully and had an episode of acute cholecystitis. At the time of the laparoscopic cholecystectomy we also laparoscopically removed his Tenc

The Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet syndrome is probably transmitted hereditarily and recognizable mainly by: a) retinitis pigmentosa; b) hypogonadism and obesity; and c) orthopedic anomalities such as polidactylia, syndactylia, and acroecephalosyndactylia with oligophrenia. Sometimes, other disturbance, mainly dermatological (alopecia), neurological, urological, endocrinological, and, rarely, congenital heart defects, may coexist.
