Motor and Limbic System Contribution to Emotional Laughter across the Lifespan.

Laughter is a universal human behavior generated by the cooperation of different systems toward the construction of an expressive vocal pattern. Given the sensitivity of neuroimaging techniques to movements, the neural mechanisms underlying laughter expression remain unclear. Herein, we characterized the neural correlates of emotional laughter using the onsets and the duration of laughter bursts to inform functional magnetic resonance imaging. Laughter-related blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) increases involved both the motor (motor cortex, supplementary motor area, frontal operculum) and t

Corpus callosum and limbic system: neuroanatomic MR evaluation of developmental anomalies.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a complex malformation of the brain that has been associated with varying degrees of limbic system maldevelopment. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 11 patients with callosal agenesis (seven total, four partial) who underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, with particular attention to the associated malformations of the limbic system. Comparison was made with selected images from MR examinations of healthy volunteers and with necropsy specimens from other patients with callosal agenesis. Ten of 11 patients demonstrated limbic anomalies (severe moti

Bilateral astrocytoma involving the limbic system precipitating disabling amnesia and seizures.

Astrocytomas involving the limbic system are usually unilateral in nature. We report a very unusual case where a low-grade astrocytoma originating in the left temporal lobe spread to the right hippocampus through the hippocampal commissure to cause disabling amnesia and seizures. Some improvement in the memory deficit was facilitated by identification of complex partial status epilepticus. EEG should be performed in all patients with lesions of the limbic system and neuropsychological problems if ongoing seizure activity is not to be missed.

[Toxic aluminum encephalopathy. Predominant involvement of the limbic system on MRI].

Two patients underwent acoustic schwannoma surgery by transmastoid approach. Petrous bone defect was filled in with aluminium-containing bone cement (Ionocem). A pseudomeningocele by CSF accumulation in subcutaneous temporoparietal area appeared after the procedure and, in subsequent weeks, encephalopathy with confusion and seizures. MRI showed cerebral involvement with herpes-like disposition. Temporal stereotactic biopsy in a case did not confirm viral encephalitis but disclosed cellular accumulation of lipofucsin and particles highly suggestive of aluminum-inclusions. Aluminium's levels in

Early childhood abuse and limbic system ratings in adult psychiatric outpatients.

The authors investigated the hypothesis that early abuse might affect the development of the limbic system. During initial psychiatric evaluation, 253 outpatients completed a self-report scale, the Limbic System Checklist-33 (LSCL-33), designed to measure somatic, sensory, behavioral, and memory symptoms suggestive of temporal lobe epilepsy, along with a questionnaire about physical or sexual abuse. Physical abuse was associated with a 38% increase in LSCL-33 scores (P < 0.01), sexual abuse with a 49% increase (P < 0.02), and combined abuse with a 113% increase (P < 0.0001). Physical or sexual

[An adult patient of Reye's syndrome--the possible background mechanism of lesions in claustrum, striatum and limbic system and limbic dementia].

We reported a 35-year-old male patient with Reye's syndrome, who showed temporarily lesions of claustrum, striatum, hippocampus and amygdala on CT, MRI and PET scan. He was previously healthy and affected upper respiratory infection. After taking 4 tablets of aspirin (335 mg x 4), he developed severe headache and status epileptics. The cerebrospinal fluid showed normal cell count and protein. The serum GOT and GPT elevated to 499 IU/l and 221 IU/l respectively. The parainfluenza virus type I titer was 32 times on admission and increased up to 128 times two weeks later. In spite of the anticonv

Estradiol, Emotion Regulation, and the Limbic System: Effects on Gray Matter Volume.

BACKGROUND: Mastering emotion regulation is crucial for social skills and mental health. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in estradiol (E2) levels across the menstrual cycle, significantly impact emotion processing. E2 is known to influence emotion regulation, mental health, and the plasticity of limbic and striatal regions, which are involved in emotion processing and are rich in E2 receptors. Although research indicates that E2 levels may impact gray matter volume (GMV) of limbic and striatal areas, sufficient causal evidence is missing so far. Furthermore, because of the additional fluct

Limbic system abnormalities in episodic cluster headache: a 7T MRI multimodal study.

BACKGROUND: Although the limbic system has long been thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of cluster headache, inconsistencies in imaging studies of episodic cluster headache (eCH) patients and limited understanding of the specific regions within the limbic system have prevented a full explanation of its involvement in the disease. Therefore, we performed multimodal imaging analysis using 7 T MRI with the aim of exploring structural-functional abnormalities in subregions of the limbic system and their relationship with clinical features. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we emp

Tracts in the limbic system show microstructural alterations post COVID-19 recovery.

Delirium, memory loss, attention deficit and fatigue are frequently reported by COVID survivors, yet the neurological pathways underlying these symptoms are not well understood. To study the possible mechanisms for these long-term sequelae after COVID-19 recovery, we investigated the microstructural properties of white matter in Indian cohorts of COVID-recovered patients and healthy controls. For the cross-sectional study presented here, we recruited 44 COVID-recovered patients and 29 healthy controls in New Delhi, India. Using deterministic whole-brain tractography on the acquired diffusion M

Somatostatin and Astroglial Involvement in the Human Limbic System in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the elderly. Progressive accumulation of insoluble isoforms of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) and tau protein are the major neuropathologic hallmarks, and the loss of cholinergic pathways underlies cognitive deficits in patients. Recently, glial involvement has gained interest regarding its effect on preservation and impairment of brain integrity. The limbic system, including temporal lobe regions and the olfactory bulb, is particularly affected in the early stages. In the early 1980s, the reduced expression of the somatostati

Neuron-Glia-Immune Triad and Cortico-Limbic System in Pathology of Pain.

Pain is an unpleasant sensation that alerts one to the presence of obnoxious stimuli or sensations. These stimuli are transferred by sensory neurons to the dorsal root ganglia-spinal cord and finally to the brain. Glial cells in the peripheral nervous system, astrocytes in the brain, dorsal root ganglia, and immune cells all contribute to the development, maintenance, and resolution of pain. Both innate and adaptive immune responses modulate pain perception and behavior. Neutrophils, microglial, and T cell activation, essential components of the innate and adaptive immune responses, can play b

Limbic system structure volumes and associated neurocognitive functioning in former NFL players.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts. CTE has been linked to disruptions in cognition, mood, and behavior. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of CTE can only be made post-mortem. Neuropathological evidence suggests limbic structures may provide an opportunity to characterize CTE in the living. Using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging, we compared select limbic brain regional volumes - the amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus - between symptomatic former National Football League (NFL) players (n = 86) and controls

Pre-existing structural abnormalities of the limbic system in transient global amnesia.

This study aimed to investigate the clinical and radiological findings in patients with transient global amnesia and to evaluate structural abnormalities using voxel-based morphometry. The subjects were diagnosed with transient global amnesia. For the voxel-based morphometry analyses, Statistical Parametric Mapping, running on the MATLAB platform (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA), was employed to analyze the structural differences between patients with transient global amnesia and control subjects. Eighty patients met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-three patients (29%) were men, and 57 patients (71

Limbic system associated membrane protein as a potential target for neuropsychiatric disorders.

The studies performed in laboratory animals and psychiatric patients suggest a possible role of limbic system-associated membrane protein (LAMP) in the mechanisms of psychiatric disorders. Stressful manipulations and genetic invalidation have revealed a role of the Lsamp gene in the regulation of anxiety in rodents. Besides that, Lsamp-deficient mice display reduced aggressiveness and impaired adaptation in novel and stressful environments. The behavioral effects of amphetamine were blunted in genetically modified mice. Recent pharmacological and biochemical studies point toward altered functi

The role of the limbic system in experiential phenomena of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Experiential phenomena occurring in spontaneous seizures or evoked by brain stimulation were reported by 18 of 29 patients with medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy who were investigated with chronic, stereotaxically implanted intracerebral electrodes. The phenomena mainly consisted of perceptual (visual or auditory) hallucinations or illusions, memory flashbacks, illusions of familiarity, forced thinking, or emotions. Experiential phenomena did not occur unless a seizure discharge or electrical stimulation involved limbic structures. For such phenomena to occur, seizure discharge or e
