BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal manipulation therapy is a common non-invasive treatment for neck pain and stiffness, and has been widely used in the population. However, most people do not pay attention to the potential risks of neck manipulation, such as ligament damage, fractures, and spinal cord injuries. Epidural hematoma is a disease in which blood accumulates in the epidural space of the vertebral body. This disease is usually caused by trauma or iatrogenic surgery, and may be associated with blood coagulopathies, neoplasms, or degenerative spinal disease. Reports of epidural hematoma caused

BACKGROUND: Spinal manipulation has been associated with cervical arterial dissection and stroke but a causal relationship has been questioned by population-based studies. Earlier studies identified cases using International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes specific to anatomic stroke location rather than stroke etiology. We hypothesize that case misclassification occurred in these previous studies and an underestimation of the strength of the association. We also predicted that case misclassification would differ by patient age.
METHODS: We identified cases in the Vete

Spinal manipulation usually represents a widely used and effective method for physicians in order to relieve acute patient pain and muscular dysbalance. Although life-threatening complications (e.g. pneumothorax, vertebral artery dissection, stroke) after manual treatment are reported with regard to actual medical literature millions of patients undergo manual treatment to manage thoracolumbar pain each year. The authors present the case of a 17 year old male patient with a life-threatening hematothorax after thoracic high velocity spinal manipulation for acute thoracolumbar pain. The patient

Childhood spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterised by loss of the alpha motor neurones of the spinal cord. SMA is cause by mutations in the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene. There are two copies of the SMN gene: SMN1 and SMN2. The two genes differ by only 11 nucleotides at the genomic level. One of these is a C to T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at position 6 in exon 7. This change alters an exon splicing enhancer in exon 7, meaning that while SMN1 expresses exclusively full-length protein containing exon 7, SMN2 is predominantly alternatively splic

OBJECTIVE: To present the rare case of a displaced odontoid fracture after manipulative treatment.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 37-year-old, 15-week pregnant patient was referred with acute neck pain and a diffuse paravertebral swelling that started after cervical manipulation performed by her general medical practitioner 5 days before. Because of pregnancy, a cervical spine radiographic series was not obtained before treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a displaced odontoid fracture associated with a pathological process in the vertebral body of C2 and a paravertebral hematoma on the left

BACKGROUND: Although spinal surgery can offer pain relief and functional improvements in daily life, it is often associated with various perioperative complications. The incidence of cardiac complications associated with spinal surgery is relatively low. We evaluated frequency and causes for bradycardia incidents in posterior thorocolumbar spinal surgeries.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated posterior thoracolumbar spinal surgeries between 2018-2022 for bradycardic events in our tertiary general hospital. Patients operated for degenerative changes or disk herniations are included, other ca

BACKGROUND: Chronic headache is a prevalent condition with substantial socioeconomic impact. Complementary or alternative therapies are increasingly being used by patients to treat headache pain, and spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is among the most common of these.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy/effectiveness of SMT for chronic headache through a systematic review of randomized clinical trials.
STUDY SELECTION: Randomized clinical trials on chronic headache (tension, migraine and cervicogenic) were included in the review if they compared SMT with other interventions or placebo. The tri

The article consists in a review of injuries for which claims were submitted to one or another of three insurance companies during a two-year period, and which had arisen in conjunction with manipulation of the cervical spine (n = 21), thoracic spine (n = 6), lumbar spine (n = 13), or the sacro-iliac joint (n = 14). Cervical spine manipulation had caused injury of the vertebral artery with resulting paralysis in three cases, and cervical disc herniation in three cases. Lumbar spine manipulation had caused disc herniation in six patients, of whom three had severe persistent problems. Of the 14

Manipulation of the spinal joints for the relief of pain is an ancient remedy that is in widespread use today. Clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of manipulative therapy are briefly reviewed, and some experimental evidence suggesting possible causes of spine pain is presented. The rationale for the use of spinal manipulative therapy within the context of R. A. McKenzie's diagnostic and therapeutic system is detailed and explicitly stated. Spinal mobilization and manipulation are presented as a logical treatment progression from the use of postural instruction and exercise therapy.

The effects of differing strategies of serotonergic manipulation on vascular permeability, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis, and the clinical course are evaluated in an experimental model of neoplastic spinal cord compression in rats. Serotonergic manipulations include in vivo inhibition of serotonin (5-HT) synthesis by p-chlorophenylalanine (p-CPA) and in vivo blockage of serotonin type 2 (5-HT2) receptors either by the selective antagonist ketanserin or by cyproheptadine. In paralyzed rats, the ratio of 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) to 5-HT is significantly elevated in the compress

INTRODUCTION: Accurately measuring the forces applied during spinal manipulation and its biomechanical effects on the spine are critically important in current research. This single case report discusses the potential benefit of accurately monitoring manipulative forces in treating low back pain with sciatica. The type of force-based spinal manipulation used to manage this case was Cox Technic flexion distraction decompression (CTFDD) spinal manipulation care, along with other ancillary modalities.
METHODS: The treatment plan, in this case, was primarily force-based CTFDD, equal-force bi-dire

Spine pain is a highly prevalent condition affecting over 11% of the world's population. It is the single leading cause of activity limitation and ranks fourth in years lost to disability globally, representing a significant personal, social, and economic burden. For the vast majority of patients with back and neck pain, a specific pathology cannot be identified as the cause for their pain, which is then labeled as non-specific. In a growing proportion of these cases, pain persists beyond 3 months and is referred to as chronic primary back or neck pain. To decrease the global burden of spine p
