Papyri are writings made on special sheets made out of reeds grown on the banks of the river Nile. The Authors comment on the relationship between a ritual text and surgical therapy with an exploration of an ancient charm as recorded in a Greek written papyrus stored in the Medicea Laurenziana Library papyri collection. This charm was presumably intended to act apotropaically, rendering harmless the aggressive surgical tool by means of still keeping its therapeutic value and thereby affording healing protection. This ritual charm acts as a "therapeutic medium" to help the surgical procedure us

One of the many works on the plague is by the Frenchman Johannes Jacobi. It dates from the 14th century and has been passed down in numerous manuscripts, and from the last quarter of the 15th century, also in many printed documents. Curiously, the latter are in the name of Canutus, Kami(n)tus, and the like. Virtually all the prints are undated, and were usually published without an indication of the place of publication or the name of the printer. The editions from the Southern Netherlands are no exception to this general rule. After a very brief description of the author and the contents, som

Modern literature about the history of migraine treatments often starts with an ancient Egyptian remedy said to be from Papyrus Ebers that involves crocodiles that should be wrapped around the head. A fresh look on this treatment shows the need for revision on many points, including the source of the remedy, its content and meaning, and further implications for the history of Papyrus Ebers.

AIMS: A translation into English of the case history section of Carl Wernicke's original manuscript of 1881, with a discussion on its relevance for clinicians today.
METHODS: A copy of Carl Wernicke's original German text was obtained by one of the authors (CCHC) and translated into English from the old German by a professional translator.
RESULTS: The translation was subsequently agreed by native German speaking referees, and minor changes made.
CONCLUSIONS: The authors studied the translation in detail and concluded that Wernicke's description had stood the test of time. The diagnosis of

Goroji Nakagawa, a chief keeper of a trading house on Iturup Island, was brought unwillingly to Siberia by Russian vessels in 1807. In 1812, after about five years of hard life in Siberia, he was permitted to return to his homeland with two Russian books on vaccination. Sadayosi Baba, who stayed at Matsumae in 1813, happened to read one of the two books that had been published in 1803 in Peterburg and he translated it into Japanese. Within several months Baba finished his translation, however, he was clearly aware that the translation was far from perfect. Baba revised his draft in 1820 and ti

The civilization of Ancient Egypt included a long period of almost three millenniums, and is the most interesting example of the so-called pretechnical archaic cultures. Papyrus scrolls are the main source of information about medical activities. There are fourteen medical papyrus scrolls, in varying states of conservation, mostly corresponding to the Middle Empire, but containing references to the Ancient Empire (the period of the pyramids). These are practical treaties with little explanation of the underlying pathology (a primitive theory of the 'flow' of humors, involving the flowing of di

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder characterizing by white macules due to loss of melanocytes. Vitiligo affects about 1 to 4% of people around the world. The treatment of vitiligo has a high cost and the long process of treatment in spite of no complete remedy. It has various psychological side-effects such as depression and anxiety affecting the quality of life seriously. Avicenna in his Canon treated these patients over a thousand years ago. This study aimed to introduce some herbal drugs in vitiligo based on the Canon of Avicenna besides the conventional medical treatments.

Medicine of V and IV centuries B.C. attested in the Corpus Hippocraticum ascribes all diseases to the rheuma, i.e. the flux of humours into the body. This flux produces not only the rise of cold, hoarseness, cough, reddening, dropsy, but also arthritis, sciatica, gout.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical details and the operative method used in pituitary tumors by Sir Victor Horsley (1857-1916), which represent the earliest attempts at pituitary surgery.
METHODS: Horsley's case books and postmortem records, archived at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, were studied for patients with a primary diagnosis of a pituitary tumor admitted during the period 1886 to 1916 who were treated surgically. Contemporary records of nonpituitary cases were also examined to study aspects of Horsley's operative method.
RESULTS: Four patients (three men and one woman

The Edwin Smith Papyrus, discovered in 1862 outside of Luxor, Egypt, is the oldest known surgical text in the history of civilization. The surviving scroll, a copy of an earlier text from around 3,000 B.C., gives us remarkable insight into the medical practice of ancient Egyptians in the Nile River bed during the dawn of civilization. The Papyrus is divided into 48 cases, most of which describe traumatic injuries. The text instructs the physician to examine the patient and look for revealing physical signs that may indicate the outcome of the injury. Although in modern medicine we take for gra

In the years from 1803 to 1824 an Italian lawyer suffered from paroxysmal facial pain that resembled essential trigeminal neuralgia. He kept a diary of his disease from its onset until 1823 when he was admitted to the old Arcispedale S. Anna in Ferrara (St. Anna's Hospital), Italy. The diary was recently discovered in the library of the Arcispedale S. Anna where it was probably put when the patient died. The patient was a man of notable culture and was able to describe with great diligence not only the course of his disease but also the most accredited treatments of that age. Some of the most

This article examines a fifteenth-century remedy book, Oxford, Bodleian Library, Rawlinson c. 299, and describes its collection of 314 medieval medical prescriptions. The recipes are organised broadly from head to toe, and often several remedies are offered for the same complaint. Some individual recipes are transcribed with modern English translations. The few non-recipe texts are also noted. The difference between a remedy book and a leechbook is explained, and this manuscript is situated in relation to other known examples of late medieval medical anthologies. The particular feature that di

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is probably as old as human beings. The Edwin Smith Papyrus is the first treatise describing the treatment of patients with TBI and allows insights into the medical examination and treatment of head-injured patients in ancient Egypt.
METHOD: Clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles in the treatment of TBI in ancient Egypt were analyzed.
RESULTS: Methodically, cases and the presentation of each case are neatly classified within the papyrus. The papyrus contains the first description of the brain, pulsations, contusions as the result of TBI, the

In June 1668 Anthony Ashley Cooper, later to become the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, underwent abdominal surgery to drain a large abscess above his liver. The case is extraordinary, not simply on account of the eminence of the patient and the danger of the procedure, but also because of the many celebrated figures involved. A trove of manuscripts relating to this famous operation survives amongst the Shaftesbury Papers in the National Archives at Kew. These include case notes in the hand of the philosopher John Locke and advice from leading physicians of the day including Francis Glisson, Sir Geor
