A Giant Posterior Maxillary Intra-Sinusal Complex Odontoma: A Clinical Case.

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic neoplasms. They are generally small and asymptomatic. This article presents an unusual case of a giant maxillary complex odontoma, which obscured a part of the maxillary antrum and impacted a tooth. This was discovered during an episode of maxillofacial cellulitis. In this case, surgical excision of the lesion was performed under general anesthesia, and the closure was performed with a fat pad pedicled flap. A brief review of the literature was performed to analyze the characteristics of this clinical entity and their implication in the treatment.

Imaging of Jaw Lesions.

Mandibular and maxillary lesions are common imaging findings, which pose a unique diagnostic challenge as dental pathology overlaps that of the remainder of the oral cavity. This review will guide radiologists in the interpretation of benign and malignant odontogenic and non odontogenic neoplasms.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor - hamartoma or true neoplasm: a case report.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon tumor of odontogenic origin with a relative frequency of 2.2 - 7.1%. As the histogenesis of AOT is still uncertain, it is sometimes categorized as a hamartomatous lesion rather than a true neoplasm. We report a case of AOT in the right maxillary anterior region in a 20-year-old woman. The tumor showed some unusual and aggressive features that suggested it was a true neoplasm.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma in minor salivary gland.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma is a rare neoplasm usually confused with other neoplasms in the salivary glands region. It has great similarity with the breast carcinoma. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival submucosal bleeding and lesion, with the initial histopathological examination revealing salivary gland neoplasm of low crane. Computed tomography revealed the lesion near the tooth 27, with extension to the floor of the left maxillary sinus and to the palate mucosa. Resection of the infra-structure was performed, with a diagnosis of breast cancer secretory carcin

[Strategy of the sinonasal tumors treatment].

INTRODUCTION: The sinonasal tumors belong to rare diseases. They state 0.2-0.8% of all the malignant neoplasms and about 3% of head and neck tumors. These tumors are two times frequent observed in men than in women, mainly between 50 and 70 years old. In the sinonasal complex besides the primary are seen also the metastatic tumors. They state about 1% of all tumors (kidney, testum, breast, pulmonary). AIM: The aim of our study was to retrospective analysis of the sinonasal tumors, treated in the ENT Department Silesian Medical University in Zabrze. The special attention was carried on the pre

'Medial maxillectomy' for lateral nasal wall neoplasms.

Lateral rhinotomy and "medial maxillectomy," an en bloc resection of the medial maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus with the lamina papyracea, medial orbital floor, and lacrimal fossa-duct, have been advocated for lateral nasal wall neoplasma. Experience with 35 (of 41) patients followed up at least 30 months (median, 57 months) postoperatively is reported. There was a 9% recurrence for benign tumors and 15% for malignant neoplasms, the latter only in the patients with nonmelanoma malignant neoplasms not receiving postoperative radiotherapy. The most frequent complications were cavity crusting, epi

Solitary plasmacytoma in the maxillary sinus: 10-year follow-up.

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) is an uncommon form of plasma cell neoplasm occurring intraosseously or in soft tissue and presents as a single mass of monoclonal plasma cells. SP in the maxillary sinus is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other maxillary sinus tumors. The essential examinations in patients with the initial diagnosis of plasmacytoma are bone marrow biopsy, serum and urine electrophoresis, and kappa/lambda ratio (κ:λ ratio) to rule out multiple myeloma (MM). Herein, a rare case of SP in the maxillary sinus treated by surgery and localized radiation is reported. At the 10-year follow-u

Clear cell calcifying epithelial odontogenic (Pindborg) tumor involving the maxillary sinus: A case report and review of literature.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws, accounting for less than 3% of all odontogenic tumors. It rarely extends into the maxillary sinus. Till date, six cases involving maxillary sinus have been reported. In this paper, we report the seventh case of a 52-year-old male with CEOT in maxilla extending from distal surface of the right maxillary canine to retromolar area and involving maxillary sinus with no association with impacted teeth. The diagnosis was confirmed by aspiration cytology and histologically, the tumor was composed of shee

A rare cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction: dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus.

The most common abnormality of the lacrimal drainage system is congenital or acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The causes of acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction may be primary or secondary. The secondary acquired obstructions may result from infection, inflammation, neoplasm, trauma or mechanical causes. The maxillary sinus cysts usually obstruct the nasolacrimal duct mechanically. Dentigerous cysts are one of the main types of maxillary cysts. These cysts are benign odontogenic cysts which are associated with the crowns of unerupted teeth. The clinical documentations of mechanical na

Analysis of expression of p63 and caspase-3 and their predictive value in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Maxillary sinus cancer is a malignant neoplasm with a prevalence of 3 to 5% of tumors in the head and neck and less than 1% of all malignant neoplasms. The role of p63 and caspase-3 and their predictive value in squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus (SCCMS) remains an underdeveloped and controversial issue that determined the relevance of the study. The aim: To analyze the relationship between the level of expression of p63 and caspase-3 and clinical and morphological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus and to determine their prognostic s

Acinic cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa: An unusual presentation.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignant neoplasm of salivary glands affecting predominantly the female population. Unusual occurrences of this neoplasm are reported in hard palate, maxillary sinuses, lip, etc. [1] We report one such case where a submandibular swelling that is provisionally diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma due to its clinical and radiological findings, turned out to be ACC on histopathological evaluation.

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a heifer.

A nasal neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) extending into the brain in a heifer produced mouth breathing and proptosis. The mass filled much of the left nasal cavity, palatine sinus and maxillary sinus, with turbinate atrophy and deviation of the septum. Caudally the neoplasm extended into the nasopharynx and olfactory bulb. It was a cellular neoplasm composed of small, undifferentiated piriform cells showing infrequent pseudorosettes and immature axonal processes. Mitosis was common is some areas.

Management of ossifying fibroma of the bone of the maxilla: a case report and review of the literature.

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a slow-growing benign fibro-osseous neoplasm. It is mostly odontogenic in origin, and it arises in the jaws, particularly the mandible. OF is characterized by the production of bone and cementum-like calcifications in a fibrous stroma. OF reports of the bone of the maxilla are uncommon. Diagnosing OF can be challenging due to the considerable overlap of clinico-pathological characteristics with those of other neoplasms. Herein, the authors describe a case report OF in a 26-year-old male who presented with a huge fibro-osseous tumor of the maxilla. Histopathology estab

Extended endoscopic approaches to the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVES: Treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic disease in the maxillary sinus, pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae requires appropriate surgical exposure. As modern rhinology evolves, so do the techniques available. This paper reviews extended endoscopic approaches to the maxillary sinus and the evidence supporting each technique. METHODS: A literature search of the Ovid Medline and PubMed databases was performed using appropriate key words relating to endoscopic approaches to the maxillary sinus. RESULTS: Mega-antrostomy and medial maxillectomy have a role in the surgical treatme

Colliding tumor of the paranasal sinus.

Sinonasal malignant neoplasms comprise only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. Synchronous and metachronous tumors of the head and neck have been described, but rarely have there been reports of a single tumor with two distinct histologies. Here, we describe a case of a sinonasal malignant neoplasm with two distinct histologies. A case report and literature review was performed. We present a case of paranasal sinus neoplasm involving two malignant cell types. An 83-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of symptoms suggestive of chronic sinusitis, which included nasal congestion and

[Chondrosarcomas of the larynx and sinus maxillaris--review of literature and report of three cases].

Chondrosarcoma is a very rare neoplasm in the head and neck region. This region is associated with favourable prognosis. Only 340 cases of chondrosarcoma of the larynx and nearly 300 of sinus maxillaris have been reported in this localization. The most reasonable treatment is radical surgery. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are of little value. Without metastasis the long term prognosis is excellent. Clinical, pathologic and radiologic characterities of these tumors are described and review of the literature is presented. The authors present two cases chondrosarcoma of the larynx and one case ch

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the maxillary sinus with orbital invasion.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the maxillary sinus is a very rare neoplasm that shares some characteristics with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been reported to be associated with LEC located outside of the nasopharynx in Asian populations. A case report of a 64-year-old Asian female with right-sided cheek mass which was diagnosed preoperatively as a maxillary mass by paranasal sinus computed tomography scan is presented. Because maxillary sinus cancer with orbital invasion was considered, she underwent surgical removal of a mass. Final pathology revealed LEC, whic

Extramedullary plasmacytoma in the head and neck region is a rare malignant neoplasm comprising approximately 3% of all the plasma cell neoplasms and less than 1% of head and neck tumors. This extraskeletal lesion is a unifocal, monoclonal, neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells. Some investigators believe that this lesion represents the least aggressive part of the spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms which extends to multiple myeloma. Therefore, plasmacytoma is believed to have clinical importance. We report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the right maxillary sinus of a 65-year-old H
