Peritoneum as an origin of epilepsy from the viewpoint of Avicenna.

There are studies that show that the concepts of epilepsy have been rooted in Persian medicine; Avicenna "Ibn-e-Sina"-one of the great Persian physicians in the Islamic golden age (9th-12th century AD)-has considered some types of epilepsy with the association of the stomach, the spleen, the "Maraqq," and the whole body which has not been reviewed properly. These organs influence on the brain and can cause epilepsy. This article presents concept of Maraqq-related epilepsy; according to Avicenna's view, "Maraqq" is a membranous structure which is located in the abdomen (equivalent of parietal p

Atheroprotector role of the spleen based on the teaching of Avicenna (Ibn Sina).

Many studies have proven atherosclerosis is an inflammatory immune disease. The spleen plays an important immune role in the human body. Splenectomy is often used in several clinical disorders; but recent studies have shown that splenectomy may be effective in the development of atheroma lesions. Ibn Sina or Avicenna was known as one of the greatest philosopher and physician in Islam and in Medicine. He is remembered for his masterpiece, The "Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb" or "Qanun of medicine". According to the "Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb", spleen as storage organ plays an important role in absorption and se

Legacy of Syriac-Aramaic Scholars in Transmitting Neurosurgical Knowledge Between Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

The link between ancient Greek medicine and the Arabic translation period in the 9th century cannot be understood without studying the contributions of Syriac scholars. With their mastery of Greek and the related Semitic languages of Syriac and Arabic, they initiated a scientific translation process with methods that prevail to this day. In this paper, we reviewed Hunayn Ibn Isshaq's Ten Treatises on the Eye to elucidate the original contributions of the Syriac physicians to the field of neurologic surgery. We analyzed the oldest known diagram of orbital anatomy along with Hunayn's genuine ide

Exploring ethnic disparities in pediatric molluscum contagiosum in Southern Israel.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common skin infection affecting children globally, including in Israel, which has a diverse population comprising mainly Jews (73.2%) and Arabs (21.1%). Despite documented disparities in various diseases between these groups, research on differences in dermatological care is scarce. This study aimed to investigate MC as a potential differentiator between Arab and Jewish children. A retrospective analysis of MC cases among children (0-18 years) from 2013 to 2022 was performed at Soroka University Medical Center, a tertiary hospital serving over a million patients

A Streamlined Treatment Algorithm for Allergic Rhinitis in the Arab Region: Expert Panel Opinion.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent atopic condition that is frequently misdiagnosed, mistreated, or overlooked, despite its high prevalence and significant economic burden. Pharmacotherapy effectively controls symptoms in the majority of cases; however, the current local guidelines and recommendations are ambiguous regarding the initiation and cessation of combined antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids treatment. Additionally, guidelines do not specify the duration of AR therapy or identify cases eligible for combination therapy. In contrast, the current era emphasizes personalized

Chapter 2: mesopotamia.

No treatise of ancient Mesopotamian clinical neurology has yet been written, although much groundbreaking work on medical or medically-related texts from this area (modern Iraq) has been performed in recent years. All through Mesopotamian civilization (c. 3000-100 BC), literary and erudite knowledge, recorded on clay tablets in cuneiform script, thrived; within the scholarly collections of medical texts, signs and symptoms of many afflictions were referred back to external agents entering in contact with the patient's body, albeit invisibly. This external etiological sphere pertained to the su

Anesthetic and analgesic practices in Avicenna's Canon of Medicine.

Anesthetic and analgesic practices during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are presented from a translation of the relevant sections of the Canon of Medicine by Avicenna (980-1037) one of the most widely read and authoritative textbooks of the period. Avicenna described tracheotomy, oropharyngeal intubation and a method for clearing upper airway secretions for the treatment of stridor and respiratory distress. He also identified certain plants with pharmacological action such as mandragora or nightshade, opium and henbane and gives various recipes for inducing both anesthesia and analgesia

Advancing global orthopedic research through culturally adapted outcome measures.

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential in orthopedic research and clinical practice, promoting standardized assessments of treatment efficacy and patient well-being. However, their validity across diverse populations depends on rigorous processes of translation, cultural adaptation, and validation. AlMousa et al successfully validated the Arabic version of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Foot and Ankle Outcomes Questionnaire, demonstrating strong reliability and clinical applicability for Arabic-speaking patients with traumatic foot and ankle injuries. Genetic clinics in arab communities: meeting individual, family and community needs.

Arab societies are characterized by a wide range of family and social structures, religious and legal conventions, and highly variable economic resources. As might be expected under these circumstances, genetic services cannot readily be devised, delivered, and assessed according to a single model. However, in general terms, the provision of genetic services in Arab communities at all population levels is still inadequate given the prevalence and burden of genetic diseases. Improving this situation calls for major educational efforts that include increasing the genetic literacy of the general

Some salient features of 'Kitabul-Hashaish' with special reference to the manuscript preserved in Khuda Baksh O.P. Library, Patna.

The contributions of Dioscorides in the field of materia medica and pharmacology are unparalleled in the history of medicine. This great botanist of the 1st century A.D. made personal observations of the specific properties of drugs and presented them through illustrations for the first time. Almost all the physician authors of Unani system of medicine from Galen to Azam Khan have quoted Dioscorides. Kitabul-Hashaish was rendered into English and arabic and published repeatedly in the West. The book has great value and is quoted widely due to its authenticity. This unique work needs to be edit

A Treatise of the Islamic Philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna) on the Fear of Death and the Treatment of Anxiety Caused by It.

Although the issue of death and fear of it is one of the oldest issues that man has dealt with, modern secular psychiatry today, as before, does not pay enough attention to the phenomenon of fear of death. The famous Islamic philosopher and physician Ibn Sina, better known in the West as Avicenna (980-1037), wrote A Treatise on the Cure for the Fear of Death and the Treatment of Anxiety Caused by It, more than nine centuries ago. Bosnian Islamic scholar Mehmed Handžić translated this treatise from Arabic into Bosnian 80 years ago. This paper provides basic data and a summary of this translatio

The concept of portal system obstruction in Avicenna's canon of medicine.

Historical literature on portal hypertension is mainly focused on the contemporary advances in therapeutic methods, especially surgical ones. However, it seems that the origin of the human knowledge on the portal system, its association with the caval system, obstructive pathologies in this system and the gastrointestinal bleeding due to hepatic diseases might be much older than previously believed. Avicenna provided a detailed anatomy of the portal venous system and its feeding branches in the Canon of Medicine. Soddat al-Kabed va al-Masarigha (liver and mesenteric occlusion) is also a diseas

Al-Zahrawi and Arabian neurosurgery, 936-1013 AD.

The authors highlight the neurosurgical contributions of an Arabic surgeon by the name of Abul-Qasim Al-Zahrawi, known in Western literature as Abulcasis. This man lived during the Middle Ages from 936 to 1013 AD and wrote a 30-volume treatise on medicine. A significant part of his work on surgery consists of early descriptions of neurosurgical diagnosis and treatment, including the surgical treatment of head injuries and skull fractures, spinal injuries and dislocations, hydrocephalus and subdural effusions, headache, and many other medical afflictions. He described neurosurgical instruments

Sleep: Its nature and mechanism in Avicenna's medicine and psychology.

Sleep is a fundamental necessity for humans and other living beings. Throughout history, many thinkers have sought to understand its complexities. Avicenna, in his works, elucidates the nature and mechanism of sleep from two angles: "sleeping," as an essential process for sentient beings, and "dreams," which reflect the effects of sleep on human life and health. This article explores sleep through Avicenna's lens, examining its philosophical, psychological, and medical foundations. It begins with a definition of sleep, followed by an analysis of its causes, manifestations, and types, including
