Sarcomas of the spermatic cord are rare, and malignant mesenchymomas are particularly rare. Only 8 cases of paratesticular mesenchymoma have been described previously. We report here the ninth case of malignant mesenchymoma of the spermatic cord, in which there was a local recurrence. We also briefly review the previously reported cases.

Although sarcoma occurring in the true retroperitoneum is not uncommon, sarcoma in the retrorectal space is unique. We report a patient with a malignant mesenchymoma, a rare soft tissue tumor, in the retrorectal space. Complete resection was accomplished through a combined Kraske's posterior and midline anterior approach. The rectum had not been invaded by the mass. Survival of patients with malignant mesenchymoma does not exceed 50% in most reports, and the role of adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation has yet to be defined. Its attendant morbidity must be weighed against an uncertain prognosis.

Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma is a rare bone tumor arising from long bones in children and adolescents. With only 21 cases reported in the literature, it is often not included in the differential diagnosis in patients with a bone tumor. Previously, the youngest case reported was in a 19-month-old boy, and a congenital variant had not been reported. We describe a case of congenital fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma of the proximal tibia that presented shortly after birth. Biopsy of a suspected malignancy on imaging confirmed the diagnosis. The child was temporarily lost to follow up and present

BACKGROUND: Spermatic cord neoplasms are a rare tumor entity and, moreover, of benign behavior. Malignant tumors of the spermatic cord are mostly of mesenchymal origin. We present the unusual case of a giant malignant mesenchymoma of the spermatic cord with bidirectional differentiation into a liposarcoma and a leiomyosarcoma.
CASE REPORT: A 84-year-old male patient presented with a scrotal mass on the left side which was observed growing since 1 year and misdiagnosed as scrotal hernia or testicular hydrocele. Ultrasound and computed tomography demonstrated a solid tumor suggesting a spermati

A case of a malignant mesenchymoma with an unusual, vasoinvasive, metastatic behavior in a three-year-old, intact female basset hound is presented. Malignant mesenchymomas are rare neoplasms in humans and in dogs. No previous reports of a malignant mesenchymoma with vasoinvasive metastasis in the dog were found in the literature. The constituent neoplasms are discussed in relation to reports in the human and veterinary literature, and a potential etiology for this unique presentation is hypothesized.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is the most common sarcoma in adults. Rarely, LMS dedifferentiates into an undifferentiated sarcoma. Very few cases of LMS with heterologous osteosarcomatous differentiation (OS) have been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of LMS with OS. Of 5570 LMS cases diagnosed from 2006 to 2022, 15 cases (0.2%) of LMS with OS were identified, affecting 13 females and 2 males; ages ranged from 32 to 66 years (median: 53 y). Ten tumors arose in the uterus, 2 in the retroperitoneum, and 1 each in the mesentery, mediastinum, and rectum. Pr

We encountered a 38-years-old female patient who was complaining of an unpleasant sensation of the left cervical area due to a recurrent tumor originating from the middle pharynx. She had a history of surgically resected neurofibroma and lipoma from the anterior oropharyngeal wall respectively 5 years and 11 years previously. The preoperative diagnosis of a benign, non-epithelial neoplasm was made based on the imaging studies and surgical treatment was scheduled. An extended surgical resection of the middle pharynx including normal mucosa and a part of the tongue base was successfully accompli

Malignant mesenchymoma is a soft tissue tumor arising preferentially in the extremities and retroperitoneum. We report a case of primary malignant mesenchymoma of the left posterior mediastinum. A 24-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for complaining of cough. Chest X-ray showed a giant mass occupying the 2/3 of the left hemithorax. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a lobulated large mass with fat density area and calcified spot in the mediastinum and left pleural space. Chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a large solid mass consisting mainly of areas with the sa

BACKGROUND: Primary malignant mesenchymoma of the bone is a rare neoplasm consisting of two or more unrelated malignant mesenchymal components. The literature reports fewer than 20 cases, most of which were composed of osteosarcoma and liposarcoma.
OBSERVATION: We report an exceedingly rare case of primary malignant mesenchymoma of bone composed of rhabdomyosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and a minor chondrosarcoma component, arising in the right proximal humerus of a 15-year-old girl. The rhabdomyosarcomatous component was present in the initial biopsy and persisted in surgical specimen following che

A benign mesenchymoma is an unencapsulated soft tissue neoplasm composed of 2 or more mature mesenchymal tissues not normally associated with each other, excluding fibrous connective tissue. No single mesenchymal tissue should predominate with respect to the other mesenchymal elements. Ten well-documented examples of intraoral benign mesenchymoma have been reported in the English language literature. The purpose of this report is to document 10 additional cases and to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of this uncommon tumor.

Benign mesenchymomas are tumors composed of an admixture of two or more mature mesenchymal tissue types. Clinically and histologically they are benign lesions. However, they are seldom encapsulated and therefore may recur locally if incompletely excised. The authors report on two benign mesenchymomas composed of mature fat, thin-walled small and medium size vessels, and spindle cells demonstrated to be smooth muscle by immunohistochemical studies. They were diagnosed in women in their 50s. Both were located in the round ligament of the uterus. One was discovered incidentally during hysterectom

A male castrated Golden Retriever was presented for evaluation of a large mass over the left shoulder extending to the lower part of the neck that had been present for an extended period of time, but had a recent history of rapid growth. Previous aspirates of the mass were consistent with a lipoma. The mass was surgically excised and was diagnosed as an extraskeletal osteosarcoma based on histopathology. After surgery, the dog was initiated on a chemotherapy protocol with carboplatin and metronomic cyclophosphamide. He became neutropenic, anemic, and thrombocytopenic 14 days after the carbopla

Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma is a rare osseous tumor that primarily arises in the long bones of children and adolescents. This lesion can grow quickly and reach a considerable size, despite its benign nature. It has proved challenging to diagnose and can be mistaken for a spectrum of benign and malignant bone tumors. The histological presentation of unique epiphyseal plate-like cartilage with destruction of the surrounding cortical bone and exhibition of dense fibrous stroma are important indicators for the diagnosis of fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma. An 11-year-old boy presented with a le

The term "malignant mesenchymoma" (MM) has traditionally been applied to a group of malignant soft tissue tumors that are characterized by the presence of two or more different mesenchymal tissue components in the same neoplasm. Currently, sarcomas with multilineage differentiation fulfilling the criteria of MM tend to be diagnosed as specific sarcomas with heterologous differentiation (e.g., de-differentiated liposarcoma) rather than MM; however, some cases of these tumors are difficult to classify. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical featu

A malignant mesenchymoma arising in the spermatic cord of a 79-year-old patient is described. The radiologic appearance was that of a predominantly calcified mass. Histologically the tumor was composed primarily of malignant cartilage. In other areas there were spindle-shaped cells and large eosinophilic and multinucleated giant cells. Staining for intermediate filaments revealed vimentin throughout the neoplasm with some areas showing positive staining for desmin, the latter confirming the muscular origin of some of the neoplastic elements. No cytokeratins were identified, effectively ruling

A case of benign mesenchymoma within the trachea of a patient with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBS) is presented. The patient presented himself with stridor. After excision the tumour recurred twice, confirming that the treatment of choice is wide, local excision.

Two rare cases of benign submucosal pharyngo-oesophageal mesenchymoma are presented in this paper. One patient was treated by tumour removal via a combined thoracic and laterocervical approach and the other by resection through a laterocervical approach. The paper discusses the pathology and diagnosis of benign mesenchymomas. The authors suggest that for large tumours located in the pharynx and extending down the oesophagus without adhesion to the oesophageal wall, the laterocervical approach can avoid complications associated with the thoracic approach. The new technique caused less tissue da

Malignant mesenchymoma is a rare soft tissue neoplasm which, by definition, shows at least two distinct types of frankly malignant mesenchymal differentiation in addition to any "undifferentiated" or "fibrosarcomatous" areas. It is generally regarded as a high-grade tumor. A series of nine new cases is presented in which all patients except one were adults. Four tumors arose in the retroperitoneum, three in the thigh. The only definable constituents were rhabdomyosarcoma (eight cases), liposarcoma (seven cases), and osteo/chondrosarcoma (five cases). On histologic grounds, at least one element
