Up to 10 years clinical performance of zirconia ceramic and metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures: A retrospective study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Completely veneered zirconia ceramic (ZC) fixed partial dentures (FPDs) have been reported to have a higher incidence of ceramic chipping than the standard metal-ceramic FPDs. However, data from comparative long-term studies are sparse. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term survival, chipping-free survival, and success of ceramic-veneered high noble metal alloy (HN), base metal alloy (cobalt-chromium alloy) (CC), and ZC FPDs and to isolate risk factors for the incidence of failure, veneer chipping, and overall complications. Palladium in dental alloys--the dermatologists' responsibility to warn?

Palladium is increasingly used in industry, but also in fine jewelry and in dentistry. Thus, palladium-silver alloys comprise a substantial part of the noble metal ceramic alloy sales in Western countries. The increased use of this metal seems, however, to be paralleled by a rise in the number of reports of palladium allergy. Recently a European study reported a sensitization rate of 2.8%. In Austria, where palladium has started to displace amalgam in dental fillings because of concerns about mercury toxicity, and gold due to price factors, we have found a sensitization rate of 8.3% in unselec

A clinical evaluation of cobalt-chromium metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures and crowns: A three- to seven-year retrospective study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In severely compromised dentition, loading of long-span and cantilever metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures (FPDs) could result in framework deformation and porcelain fractures. The use of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys may be advantageous, but there is little information on the longevity of, and complications with, prostheses made with these alloys. PURPOSE: The aim of this retrospective study was to report the survival and complication rates of Co-Cr metal-ceramic FPDs and crowns followed over a 3- to 7-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 42 patients

Serum aluminium and cobalt levels after ceramic-on-ceramic and metal-on-metal total hip replacement.

In a randomised study, 28 patients with a mean age of 62.2 years (32 to 81) with osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis of the hip received either a ceramic-on-ceramic or a metal-on-metal total hip replacement. Apart from the liners the acetabular and femoral components were made of Ti-Al-Nb alloy. The serum aluminium and cobalt levels were measured before, and at one year after surgery. The 15 patients in the ceramic-on-ceramic group had a median pre-operative aluminium level of 1.3 microg/l (0.25 to 8.4) and a cobalt level below the detection limit. At one year the aluminium level was 1.1 micr

Effect of surface treatment on bond strength of Ti-10Ta-10Nb to low-fusing porcelain.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy is a promising alloy for metal ceramic crowns because of its good corrosion resistance and low cytotoxicity. However, more information is needed on the bond strength between this alloy and porcelain. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the surface morphology, surface roughness, and bond strength of a Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy, pure Ti, and a Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ti-10Ta-10Nb, pure Ti, and Ti-6Al-4V specimens (25 × 3 × 0.55 mm plate) were prepared and then divided into 6 groups (n=8) according to surface treatment. Group P (con

OCCLUSAL TRAUMA OF IMPLANT-SUPPORTED METAL-CERAMIC CROWN: A CASE REPORT.

In this article there is a clinical case of occlusion trauma of implant-supported metal-ceramic crown for prosthetics of central incisor. Its uniqueness is the possibility to save dental implant after acute occlusion impact, which was strong enough to break ceramic facing of fixed denture, but not able to destroy bone and implant components. The occlusion force located at the incisal edge of the crown induced a reverse torque to the implant and did not result in its failure or bone resorption. In a year after repeated fixed prosthetics, the results of clinical examination proved absence of any

[Thermal expansion of Au-Pd-Ag system alloys. Casting stress and deformation of addition of Sn and In].

To study the dimensional changes due to the release of casting stress in metal-ceramic alloys, a wheel-like pattern in which casting stress is liable to occur and rod- and barrel-like wax patterns in which the likelihood of such stress is low, were investigated with a phosphate-bonded investment compound. Furthermore, simultaneous casting was done using Au-Pd-Ag system alloys, 21 types of mother alloys and alloys with tin or indium or both, and accurate determinations of the thermal expansion rate with increased or decreased temperature were carried out. The results obtained were as follows. T

[Results of cementless hip arthroplasty].

Hip arthroplasty is performed nowadays according to the needs of the patients irrespective of their age. Tapered rectangular stems for cementless fixation are chosen in most cases in central Europe. They provide primary stability by press-fit implantation into a precisely rasped osseous bed and secondary stability by bone ingrowth into the highly biocompatible titanium alloy with a microrough surface. The 10-year survival of such devices is 92%. Typical radiographic patterns include cortical atrophy and radiolucent lines in Gruen zones 1 and 7. They are due to stress shielding with these dista

Corrosion and Biocompatibility Studies of Bioceramic Alumina Coatings on Aluminum Alloy 6082.

Recent advances in ceramic materials, particularly porous alumina (Al2O3), have significantly enhanced the safety and efficacy of medical implants by improving biocompatibility and modulating cellular behavior for biomedical applications. Variations in the surface structure and chemical composition of porous Al2O3 promote different biological responses and coating stability, underscoring the need for further biological and corrosion research. Traditional methods for producing alumina ceramics from powder are expensive, time-consuming, and limited in their ability to create complex shapes and l

Processing and properties of magnesium containing a dense uniform dispersion of nanoparticles.

Magnesium is a light metal, with a density two-thirds that of aluminium, is abundant on Earth and is biocompatible; it thus has the potential to improve energy efficiency and system performance in aerospace, automobile, defence, mobile electronics and biomedical applications. However, conventional synthesis and processing methods (alloying and thermomechanical processing) have reached certain limits in further improving the properties of magnesium and other metals. Ceramic particles have been introduced into metal matrices to improve the strength of the metals, but unfortunately, ceramic micro

Extreme Serum Titanium Concentration Induced by Acetabular Cup Failure: Unveiling a Unique Scenario of Titanium Alloy Debris Accumulation.

The majority of contemporary total hip arthroplasty (THA) implants are constructed from Ti alloys, which are generally believed to generate fewer adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) compared to CoCr alloys. This study presents a case of unusual primary THA failure where a substantial release of Ti alloy debris was observed. A 52-year-old active male underwent THA after post-traumatic aseptic necrosis of the femoral head in 2006. Seventeen years after the procedure, the patient presented with groin pain and a restricted range of motion. X-rays revealed the protrusion of the alumina ceramic h

There Is No Significant Difference in Fretting and Corrosion at the Trunnion of Metal and Ceramic Heads.

No study has compared the prevalence of fretting and corrosion at the trunnion of cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) and zirconia ceramic heads in the same patients. The authors sought to compare the prevalence of fretting and corrosion at the trunnion after total hip arthroplasty with a 32-mm Co-Cr or a 32-mm zirconia ceramic head-on-polyethylene bearing. Isolated revision of the ace-tabular components was performed in 78 patients (156 hips) for polyethylene wear and osteolysis of the acetabulum. Seventy-eight Co-Cr head-titanium alloy stem pairs were compared with 78 zirconia ceramic head-titanium alloy

Direct recovery of boiler residue by combustion synthesis.

Boiler residue (BR) of thermal power plants is one of the important secondary sources for vanadium production. In this research, the aluminothermic self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) was used for recovering the transition metals of BR for the first time. The effects of extra aluminum as reducing agent and flux to aluminum ratio (CaO/Al) were studied and the efficiency of recovery and presence of impurities were measured. Aluminothermic reduction of vanadium and other metals was carried out successfully by SHS without any foreign heat source. Vanadium, iron, and nickel principall

Comparative microstructural study of the diffusion zone between NiCr alloy and different dental ceramics.

Our knowledge on the bonding mechanisms between the metal and ceramic parts of dental systems is very limited. This work tested the hypothesis that the details of the interface processes can be described in the framework of a chemical diffusion model. The development of interfacial phases was investigated by cross-sectional analytical transmission electron microscopy between a NiCr (Wiron 99) alloy and three different dental ceramics (Carat, Vita VMK 95, and Vision). All systems were investigated at normal firing conditions (suggested by the manufacturer) and at increased firing times as well.

Cobalt exposure and cancer risk.

Cobalt is a technically important metal, used mainly as a binder in the hard-metal industry and as a constituent of many alloys. Cobalt compounds are used as drying agents in paints and laquers. Since ancient times, cobalt compounds have been used as coloring agents for pottery, ceramics, and glass. Soluble cobalt salts interfere adversely with cell division, bind irreversibly to nucleic acids in the cell nucleus, induce chromosome aberrations in plants, and are weakly mutagenic in some in vitro tests with cultured animal cells, bacteria, and yeast. Injections or implantation of cobalt metal,

An overview of recent advances in designing orthopedic and craniofacial implants.

Great deal of research is still going on in the field of orthopedic and craniofacial implant development to resolve various issues being faced by the industry today. Despite several disadvantages of the metallic implants, they continue to be used, primarily because of their superior mechanical properties. In order to minimize the harmful effects of the metallic implants and its by-products, several modifications are being made to these materials, for instance nickel-free stainless steel, cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys are being introduced to eliminate the toxic effects of nickel being rel

Thermally treated FeCrAl alloy as potential biomaterial: surface characterization, corrosion resistance and cytotoxicity studies.

Metal alloys are widely used in implantology due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, their biocompatibility can be compromised by corrosion, which releases toxic metal ions that may provoke adverse biological reactions and contribute to implant failure. This study introduces a novel metal-ceramic composite based on a high-chromium FeCrAl alloy, specifically engineered to form a thermally grown α-Al₂O₃ surface layer. This design aims to significantly enhance biocompatibility and corrosion resistance for potential biomedical implant applications. Samples of the Fe-44Cr-5Al alloy w

Unveiling Hydrogen-Based Direct Reduction Mechanisms of Multicomponent Oxides via In Situ High-Energy X‑ray Diffraction.

Co-reduction of multicomponent oxides with hydrogen offers a carbon-neutral approach toward sustainable alloy design. Herein, we use in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction technique to gain insights into multicomponent oxide reduction of two precursor variants: mechanically mixed powders and pre-sintered oxide mixtures, targeting an equiatomic CoFeMnNi alloy. We find distinct reduction pathways and microstructure evolution, depending on initial precursors. Mixed powders are reduced to body-centered-cubic, face-centered-cubic, and MnO phases via halite, spinel, and Mn3O4 intermediates, whereas t
