Risk of lung cancer in workers producing stainless steel and metallic alloys.

OBJECTIVES: The mortality of workers involved in the production of stainless and alloyed steel from 1968 to 1992 was studied, in order to investigate the risk of lung cancer due to exposure to metals, i.e. iron oxides, chromium and/or nickel compounds. METHODS: The study design was a historical cohort mortality study and a nested case-control study concerning lung cancer. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were computed using regional mortality rates as an external reference for comparing observed and expected numbers of deaths, adjusting for age, sex and calendar time. Conditional logistic

Evaluation of workers exposed to dust containing hard metals and aluminum oxide.

BACKGROUND: Fourteen worker exposed to hard metals and aluminum oxide were evaluated. METHODS: Six heavily exposed workers underwent bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage, and five workers underwent transbronchial biopsy. RESULTS: Microchemical analysis of transbronchial biopsies showed a high lung burden of exogenous particles, especially metal related to their hard metals exposure. Lung tissue and cellular changes, which were associated with exposure to hard metal and aluminum oxide, corresponded well with the microanalytic test results. CONCLUSIONS: Three workers had at biopsy diffuse

Vibration-induced white finger syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome among Finnish metal workers.

OBJECTIVE: Officially 10-26 cases of vibration-induced white fingers (VWF) have been reported annually in Finland. It has been suggested that the numbers are underestimated. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the cumulative exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) and the prevalence of clinically diagnosed cases of VWF and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a population of Finnish metal workers and to determine the symptoms and clinical tests that would best predict the diagnosis. METHODS: A questionnaire on vibration exposure at the workplace and symptoms of the upper extremities was

Work in the metal industry and nasopharyngeal cancer mortality among formaldehyde-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate further the possibility that the large nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) mortality excess among a cohort of formaldehyde-exposed workers may be related to occupational factors external to the study plant. METHODS: Subjects were 7345 workers employed at a plastics-producing plant (1941-1984) in Wallingford, Connecticut evaluated independently as part of a National Cancer Institute cohort study. Vital status for 98% of the cohort and cause of death for 95% of 2872 deaths were determined through 2003. Reconstructed worker exposures to formaldehyde were used to compute unlagge

Epidemiological survey of workers exposed to cobalt oxides, cobalt salts, and cobalt metal.

Several organs (lung, skin, thyroid, heart, bone marrow) are potential targets of cobalt (Co). Whereas there is no doubt that inhalation of Co alone may cause bronchial asthma, its role in the occurrence of hard metal disease is still controversial because most cases were reported in workers exposed not only to Co but also to other substances such as tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, iron, silica and diamond. To assess whether exposure to pure Co dust (metal, oxides, or salts) may lead to adverse health effects a cross sectional study was carried out among 82 workers in a Co refinery. The re

Blood biomarkers in metal scrap workers accidentally exposed to ionizing radiation: a case study.

The detrimental effect of nuclear accidents due to localized or whole body radiation exposure results in severe cellular damage. The current study was carried out to evaluate radiation-mediated variability in blood components of metal scrap workers exposed accidently to cobalt-60 source. Blood samples collected initially from five hospitalized patients, coded P1-P5, were processed for total leukocyte counts (TLC), platelet (PLT) counts, haemoglobin, estimation of DNA double strand breaks by measuring phosphorylated form of H2AX (γ-H2AX) and chromosomal aberrations (dicentrics). Blood cells cou

Effects of lifestyle on micronuclei frequency in human lymphocytes in Japanese hard-metal workers.

OBJECTIVE: The risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other major causes of mortality are largely attributable to lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol drinking, hours of working and sleeping, physical activity, diet, and stress. Earlier studies have suggested that an unhealthy lifestyle is also associated with increased lymphocyte sensitivity to mutagens, oxidative DNA damage level, and leukocyte DNA damage. In order to explore the genotoxicity of unhealthy lifestyle, we evaluated the effect of overall lifestyle as well as some individual lifestyle factors on micronuclei (MN) frequ

Estimating risk during showering exposure to VOCs of workers in a metal-degreasing facility.

The incremental risk of workers in a metal-degreasing facility exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the water supply during showering was estimated. A probabilistic and worst-case approach using specific-site concentration data and a generalized multipathway exposure model was applied. Estimates of hazard index and lifetime cancer risk were analyzed for each chemical and each route of exposure (inhalation and dermal absorption). The results showed that dermal exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, PCE) represented the main contributio

The Association of Renal Function and Plasma Metals Modified by EGFR and TNF-α Gene Polymorphisms in Metal Industrial Workers and General Population.

Exposure to metals may be associated with renal function impairment, but the effect modified by genetic polymorphisms was not considered in most studies. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and tumor necrotic factor-α (TNF-α) play important roles in renal hemodynamics, and they have been reported to be associated with some renal diseases. The aim of our research is to explore whether genetic variations in EGFR and TNF-α have influence on renal function under exposure to various metals. This cross-sectional study consisted of 376 metal industrial workers, 396 participants of Taiwan Biobank,

Occupational Dermatitis among the Metal Working Fluid Factory Workers in Bengaluru - A Cross-Sectional Study.

CONTEXT: Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are complex oils used to protect the metal piece and the cutting tool from friction and wear out during the machining process. Direct contact of skin with MWF can lead to occupational dermatitis (O.D.). It is a local skin inflammation caused by occupational exposure to any substance at work leading to dryness, itching, redness, and wheals on the skin. Annually, 1.2 million metal workers are exposed to MWF, but there needs to be more research on them. AIMS: To determine the associated factors of O.D. among the MWF factory workers in Bengaluru. METHODS AND M

Exposure to soluble platinum salts in precious metal refinery workers over a 17-year period.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to soluble chlorinated platinum (Pt) salts, commonly called chloroplatinates, is a known cause of Pt salt sensitisation (PSS) and occupational asthma. We aimed to model inhalable soluble Pt salts exposure levels based on measurements in precious metal refineries for use in a retrospective cohort study on PSS. METHODS: Five platinum refineries located in the United Kingdom (3 sites), United States, and South Africa provided time weighted average inhalable soluble Pt salts exposure data, measured in 2,982 personal air samples over a 17-year period (2000-2016).
