BACKGROUND: Experiencing racial microaggressions has clear effects on physical and psychological health, including obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms (OCS). More research is needed to examine this link. Psychological flexibility is an important process to examine in this work.
AIMS: This study aimed to examine if, while controlling for depression and anxiety, experiences of microaggressions and psychological flexibility helped explain OCD symptoms within a university-affiliated sample (undergraduate, graduate and law students). This was a pilot exploration of the relationships across them

Gendered racial microaggressions refer to subtle, yet psychologically injurious, interpersonal experiences rooted in racial and gender oppression. As a manifestation of gendered racism, Black women commonly report such experiences, yet this research primarily focuses on younger (e.g., college-attending) adults. Whether gendered racial microaggressions are most salient at specific life course stages (i.e., emerging versus older adulthood) remains unclear. Drawing from intersectionality, social stress, and life course perspectives, this study investigated whether life course stage (e.g., emergin

INTRODUCTION: Although psycho-socio-cultural models of health disparities concerning alcohol among Black Americans posit that these differences arise in part due to the interplay of environmental (e.g., racism) and individual (e.g., negative affect) variables, there is a dearth of research testing whether these variables are proximally related to drinking. Thus, the present study used daily diary methodology to test whether experiences of race-based microaggressions were related to experiencing negative affect, greater drinking to cope with microaggressions-related negative affect, and other a

Research indicates the importance of investigating psychosocial factors that contribute to Asian American women's hazardous alcohol use. Thus, the present study examines how gendered racial microaggressions and racial collective self-esteem are associated with hazardous alcohol use among Asian American women, as well as the potential indirect effect of drinking to cope. A final sample of 300 Asian American women filled out a cross-sectional survey consisting of our study variables. Regression analyses indicated that gendered racial microaggressions was positively associated with hazardous alco

Racial-ethnic minoritized individuals face persistent disparities in mental health service utilization, which are shaped by structural and interpersonal racism. This study examined whether racial microaggressions in counseling were indirectly associated with substance use through their impact on help-seeking intentions and psychological distress. A serial mediation model was tested using self-report data from a community-based sample of racial-ethnic minoritized adults (N = 223). Results indicated that prior experiences of racial microaggressions in counseling were associated with lower help-s

Disparities in health outcomes between Black and White Americans are well-documented, including sleep quality, and disparities in sleep may lead to disparities in health over the life course. A meta-model indicates that cognitive processes may underly the connection between race and poor sleep quality, and ultimately, health disparities. That is, there are race-specific stressors that disproportionately affect Black Americans, which are associated with poor health through biological, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms (e.g., sleep). Among these race-specific stressors is discrimination, whic

BACKGROUND: Collaborative care relationships form a key component of recovery-oriented mental healthcare, but can be disrupted if service users feel judged by professionals. Professionals can express stigmatizing attitudes through microaggressions, i.e. subtle forms of discrimination that have a negative cumulative effect. People with psychosis have been found to regularly experience overt and subtle forms of stigma in mental healthcare. This study aims to expand our understanding of the various forms and consequences of microaggression from a service user perspective.

The United States is currently facing a maternal health crisis, and mental health issues are a leading preventable cause of maternal mortality. We assessed the influence of resilience on the relationship between gendered racial microaggressions (GRM) and postpartum depressive symptoms and functioning. We analyzed data among 265 postpartum Global Majority participants across four Philadelphia and New York hospitals. We administered the adapted Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale (α = 0.97) to participants before discharge. Postpartum depressive symptoms, postpartum functioning, and resilienc

BACKGROUND: In prior research ableist microaggressions have correlated with higher measures of psychological distress. However, research has not yet examined the relationship between ableist microaggressions and well-being as measured not merely by the absence of distressing mental health symptoms, but rather about effective functioning and flourishing.
OBJECTIVE: The present study addressed this gap by analyzing the relationship between ableist microaggressions and well-being and assessing if different coping strategies moderate the relationship in a sample of adults with varied disabilities

BACKGROUND: Type II (client-on-worker) workplace violence (WPV) between patients and nurses is an ongoing safety and health challenge in health care. However, little is known about the experiences of racial and ethnic minority nurses specifically in a profession in which most individuals identify as White. During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, type II WPV against certain minority groups increased, which suggests that underrepresented racial and ethnic minority nurses may have unique experiences with type II WPV inflicted by patients, their family members, or visitors.

OBJECTIVE: Compared to non-Black women, Black women in the United States are more likely to be diagnosed with HIV, living with HIV, and have suboptimal HIV outcomes, disparities largely linked to structural and psychosocial factors that may impact mental health.
METHOD: 151 Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study completed baseline assessments between October 2019 and January 2020 in the Southeastern United States. Measures captured microaggressions (gendered-racial, HIV, and Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer), "macro" discrimination acts (gender, race

Although overt racism is condemned by many organizations, insidious forms of racism persist. Drawing on the conservation of resources framework (Hobfoll, 1989), this article identifies forms and outcomes of racial microaggressions-daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities that denigrate individuals from racially minoritized groups (Sue, Capodilupo, et al., 2007). Leveraging survey data from 345 Black employees, open-ended question qualitative insights delineate three overarching themes of workplace microaggression toward Black employees: anti-Black stereotype expression, racializ

Racial microaggressions are common experiences for students of color on college campuses. Given prior research connecting microaggressions to negative mental health outcomes, it is important to better understand the social context and process through which microaggressions are associated with poorer mental health. In addition, we put forth a psycho-sociological approach to microaggressions, integrating an attention to both individual psychology and broader social structure. Specifically, the present study investigated whether the indirect association of school/workplace microaggressions and in

Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights, insults, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that communicate hostile or derogatory messages to minoritized populations. When microaggressions cross over to social media, they can be considered a form of cyberbullying, which occurs over digital devices and harms, threatens, undermines, or socially excludes others. Microaggressions and cyberbullying have adverse mental health outcomes for racial and cultural minority youth, and there is an urgent need for practical strategies youth can use online to interrupt and disarm negative and

Emerging work suggests that experiences of racial discrimination may impact overall sleep health; however, there is limited work on the link between racial microaggressions and sleep. Using weekly diary data, the current study examined young adults' weekly reports of racial microaggressions across 4 weeks, and their relation to weekly reports of sleep-onset latency, reduced total sleep time and poorer sleep quality. This design allowed us to examine how within-person fluctuations in racial microaggressions corresponded with young adults' sleep. Data were collected among 140 African American (6

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC), including unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, present persistent challenges in clinical assessment and long-term care. Although behavioral observation remains the primary basis for detecting signs of consciousness, interpretation of such observations often depends on clinical judgment and contextual information provided by caregivers. In some cases, family caregivers may detect subtle signs of recovery in individuals with PDOC; however, these observations are not always incorporated into clinical assessment o

OBJECTIVE: Microaggressions are a common phenomenon affecting minoritized individuals across a wide range of contexts. Their well-known cumulative detrimental effect on mental health raises questions not only in regard to etiological, but also health services research. Initial evidence suggests that microaggressions within psychotherapeutic contexts might harm both process and outcome variables within specific (e.g., racialized) samples. Still, it is unclear whether this is primarily a problem of specific patient groups or rather a generalizable pattern of structural oppression.

Asian American women in women-majority service and care occupations frequently encounter gendered racial microaggressions. Guided by intersectionality theory, this study examined whether depressive and anxiety symptoms statistically mediate the association between gendered racial microaggressions and sleep quality in a cross-sectional sample. We conducted an online survey of 356 Asian American women in Minnesota (September-October 2024) via community-partner outreach. Gendered racial microaggressions were measured with the Gendered Racial Microaggression Scale for Asian American Women (GRMS-AA

BACKGROUND: In the United States, Black/African American (AA) women face significant health disparities, including higher rates of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (APOs). This is despite increased utilization of prenatal care (PNC) over time, which is a critical intervention for identifying and managing pregnancy-related complications. While most research has focused on PNC entry, less attention has been given to the quality of PNC received. This study investigates the association between perceived racial microaggressions during PNC and perceived quality of PNC among AA women.

The present study investigated child behavior problems, parenting styles, coparenting, and couple relationship satisfaction in 67 European gay father families via surrogacy and 67 European heterosexual parent families via unassisted conception, all with children aged 1.5-10 years (M = 3.57 years, SD = 2.09). The two family groups were matched for child age and gender. In the gay father group only, the associations between family anti-gay microaggressions, family/friend support, and other main variables also were explored. Children of gay fathers had fewer externalizing and internalizing proble
