Gut microbiota and atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis reflects a chronic inflammatory process of arteries. The origin of chronic vascular inflammation has been associated over a long time primarily with lipid disorders, but evidence from the past years has suggested that lipid-independent pathways are also involved. Recent research has demonstrated that the gastrointestinal microbiota has an impact on the development of atherosclerosis. Many clinical studies have revealed that there exist altered gut microbiota and increased intestinal abundance of bacteria from the oral cavity in atherosclerosis-related disorders such as cardiova

Microbiota insights in endometriosis.

Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and is characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity, leading to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and a significant reduction in quality of life. Beyond its local manifestations, endometriosis is increasingly recognized as a systemic, immune-mediated condition with multifactorial origins. In this narrative review, we provide an updated and comprehensive overview of the disease, including its pathophysiology, clinical features, and evolving conceptual frameworks. Considering the frequent

[Gut Microbiota and Obesity].

Obesity is a global health concern associated with a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, and cardiovascular conditions. Recent studies highlight the significant role of gut microbiota in obesity. Research indicates notable changes in the composition and diversity of gut microbiota in individuals diagnosed with obesity. The gut microbiota participate in energy metabolism, lipid synthesis, and regulation of inflammation and therefore play a key role in the pathogenesis of obesity. Therapeutic approaches based on the use of probiotics, prebiotics, Akkerman

Microbiota and parasite relationship.

The diversity of microbiota is different in each person. Many health problems such as autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and depression can be caused by microbiota imbalance. Since the parasite needs a host to survive, it interacts closely with the microbiota elements. Blastocystis acts on the inflammatory state of the intestine and may cause various gastrointestinal symptoms, on the contrary, it is more important for gut health because it causes bacterial diversity and richness. Blastocystis is associated with changes in gut microbiota composition, the ultimate indicator

Microbiota and Hematological Diseases.

The microbiota is directly involved in the host metabolic process, as well as in immune response modulation and recruitment of different cells typology in the inflammatory site. Human microbiota modification (dysbiosis) is a condition which could be correlated with various pathologies. The short-chain fatty acids produced by the metabolic process have an important role as immune mediators. In hematology field, dysbiosis can represent a predisposing condition for triggering and/or conditioning both non-neoplastic (iron deficiency anemia, thrombosis, thrombocytosis or thrombocytopenia) and neopl

Identification of an intraocular microbiota.

The current dogma in ophthalmology and vision research presumes the intraocular environment to be sterile. However, recent evidence of intestinal bacterial translocation into the bloodstream and many other internal organs including the eyes, found in healthy and diseased animal models, suggests that the intraocular cavity may also be inhabited by a microbial community. Here, we tested intraocular samples from over 1000 human eyes. Using quantitative PCR, negative staining transmission electron microscopy, direct culture, and high-throughput sequencing technologies, we demonstrated the presence

Microbiota and Ocular Diseases.

Recent advances have identified significant associations between the composition and function of the gut microbiota and various disorders in organ systems other than the digestive tract. Utilizing next-generation sequencing and multiomics approaches, the microbial community that possibly impacts ocular disease has been identified. This review provides an overview of the literature on approaches to microbiota analysis and the roles of commensal microbes in ophthalmic diseases, including autoimmune uveitis, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other ocular disorders. In addition, this

Phosphate, Microbiota and CKD.

Phosphate is a key uremic toxin associated with adverse outcomes. As chronic kidney disease (CKD) progresses, the kidney capacity to excrete excess dietary phosphate decreases, triggering compensatory endocrine responses that drive CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Eventually, hyperphosphatemia develops, and low phosphate diet and phosphate binders are prescribed. Recent data have identified a potential role of the gut microbiota in mineral bone disorders. Thus, parathyroid hormone (PTH) only caused bone loss in mice whose microbiota was enriched in the Th17 cell-inducing taxa segmented

Microbiota and the social brain.

Sociability can facilitate mutually beneficial outcomes such as division of labor, cooperative care, and increased immunity, but sociability can also promote negative outcomes, including aggression and coercion. Accumulating evidence suggests that symbiotic microorganisms, specifically the microbiota that reside within the gastrointestinal system, may influence neurodevelopment and programming of social behaviors across diverse animal species. This relationship between host and microbes hints that host-microbiota interactions may have influenced the evolution of social behaviors. Indeed, the g

The Microbiota and Cancer Cachexia.

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome defined by weight loss, muscle wasting, and systemic inflammation. It affects the majority of patients with advanced cancer and is associated with poor treatment response, early mortality and decreased quality of life. The microbiota has been implicated in cancer cachexia through pathways of systemic inflammation, gut barrier dysfunction and muscle wasting. The imbalance of the microbiota, known as dysbiosis, has been shown to influence cancer cachexia. Bacteria that play beneficial and detrimental roles in the disease pathogenesis have been identif

[Microbiota and metabolic syndrome].

The role of gut bacteria in the pathogenesis and treatment of various diseases has been a focus of attention in the last 10 years. Prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases continues to increase, in spite of technological developments and treatment alternatives. Microbial dysbiosis, described as the decrease of useful bacteria and the increase of harmful bacteria, has been associated with diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome. In microbial dysbiosis, increase of harmful metabolites and changes to composition of bile acids occur via carbohydrate and prote

Gut microbiota and the liver.

Nowadays liver diseases represent one of major healthy problems in the world in terms of morbidity and mortality. The high prevalence of liver pathologies represents the key point to understand the necessity to identify the pathogenetic mechanisms that support these disorders in order to nurse them. Alterations of intestinal microbiota seem to play an important role in induction and promotion of liver damage progression, in addition to direct injury resulting from different causal agents. Gut microbiota is considered both as a promoting factor and as a potential therapeutic target of a large n

[Megaesophagus microbiota and carcinogenesis].

BACKGROUND: The risk of development of spin cell carcinoma of the esophagus is 33 times higher in patients with chagasic achalasia. It is possible that the production of N-nitroso compounds in the esophageal lumen by of bacterial action in the stasis liquid that reduce nitrates from diet into nitrites may play a role in this process. AIM: To analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the microbiota in chagasic megaesophagus with special attention to bacteria capable of transforming nitto reduction. PATIENTS: Fifteen patients (six men and nine women) were prospectively studied, with ages varyin

Microbiota of gingivitis in man.

A study on the predominant cultivable microorganisms inhabiting gingival crevices affected with a chronic gingivitis was carried out using the roll tube culture technique. Samples were obtained from nine individuals 25--42 years of age. Gram-positive rods make up 29.1% of the isolates and included mainly Actinomyces naeslundii, Actinomyces israelii, and Actinomyces viscosus. Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus sanguis together made up 26.8% of the cultivable organisms. Peptostreptococcus averaged 3.0% of the organisms recovered. Gram-negative anaerobic rods constituted 25.0% of the total iso

Commensal microbiota regulate aldosterone.

The gut microbiome regulates many important host physiological processes associated with cardiovascular health and disease; however, the impact of the gut microbiome on aldosterone is unclear. Investigating whether gut microbiota regulate aldosterone can offer novel insights into how the microbiome affects blood pressure. In this study, we aimed to determine whether gut microbiota regulate host aldosterone. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to assess plasma aldosterone and plasma renin activity (PRA) in female and male mice in which gut microbiota are intact, suppressed, or a

The gut microbiota in malnutrition.

Malnutrition poses a substantial global health burden with long-lasting physical, social and economic effects. Now recognized as an spectrum of interrelated conditions, malnutrition manifests differently based on an individual's geography, health-care access and lifestyle. There is growing evidence that malnutrition is also driven by defects in the composition and function of the gut microbiota, a metabolically active 'virtual organ' known to play a central role in intestinal barrier function, energy harvest, immune regulation and metabolic signalling. Across the malnutrition spectrum, perturb

Microbiota in drug resistance.

Drug resistance, particularly those of anticancer drugs and antibiotics, poses a significant challenge in the treatment of diseases, severely compromising therapeutic efficacy and patient survival rates. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have highlighted the dual role of microbiota in either promoting or mitigating drug resistance. The microbiome exists in symbiosis with the host, playing a crucial role in maintaining physiological functions and regulating immune responses. However, dysbiosis within the microbial community may induce or exacerbate drug resistance. While antibiot
