Inpatient cocaine abusers: an analysis of psychological and demographic variables.

One hundred cocaine abusers were evaluated with a full battery of psychological tests (Shipley Institute of Living Scale, MMPI, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Rorschach, Beck Depression Inventory) by Norman J. Lesswing, Ph.D. These patients were treated in a 6-week program on a chemical dependency unit at the Benjamin Rush Center in Syracuse, New York, from 1984 to 1986. Information was gathered across a wide range of demographic and clinical variables (age, sex, marital status, race, education, family history, and cross addiction), and psychological features (MMPI profile types, intell

[Differential personality features in adult ADHD subtypes].

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and personality traits are relatively stable from childhood and across life span. The purpose of this study was to identify differential and discriminative personality traits between clinical subtypes of ADHD in adults. The Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ) and the Millon Multiaxial Clinical Inventory-II (MCMI-II) were administered to a sample of 146 adults with ADHD. Activity and Aggression-Hostility dimensions from the ZKPQ allowed us to properly classify 75.8% of the inattentive and combined subtypes. Data indicates that ADHD

An MCMI-II item-level component analysis: personality and clinical factors.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Version 2 (MCMI-II) was released to replace the MCMI-I. Research into the factor structure of the items of the MCMI-I showed components consistent with the underlying construction theory. No such work has been done with the new MCMI-II. For this study, we analyzed the personality disorder and clinical syndrome items across two subject samples. For 579 Veterans Administration patients and 492 normal college students, six personality factors were identified. The samples shared Hostility, Histrionic/Schizoid, Dependent, Compulsive, and a Sadistic variant.

Recidivism following spouse abuse abatement counseling: treatment program implications.

This paper examined demographic and personality characteristics of violence-free completers (n = 74) and violence repeating completers (n = 32) of a spouse abuse abatement counseling program. Chi-square analyses on categorical data, and analyses of variance on personality test data revealed several predicted findings. Compared to violence-free completers, recidivists reported higher levels of substance abuse both before and after treatment. Recidivists also showed evidence of higher narcissism, measured by the Narcissistic, Gregarious and Aggressive subscales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial

Toward a Cognitive Conceptualization of Dysthymia: Cognitive Behavioral Identification and Treatment of Patients with Dysthymia.

Archival records of three groups of outpatients, seen in a U.S. behavioral health clinic during 2009 and 2010, were examined. All had taken a battery of tests and measures at admission, including both the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) and a questionnaire representing beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, believed to be prototypical of dysthymia. The groups, identified on the basis of their MCMI-III profiles, were Dysthymia (n = 84), nonchronic Depression (n = 58), and Control (n = 120). Significant differences were found among the groups, in that the Dysthymia group had the

The MCMI-II diagnosis of schizophrenia: operating characteristics and profile analysis.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) scores of 35 schizophrenic inpatients were compared with scores from a matched group of 35 psychiatric inpatients with no thought disorder. The operating characteristics of the Thought Disorder (SS) scale in overlapping and nonoverlapping form were determined using various cutoff points defined by Base Rate (BR) scores or the numbers of prototypic items endorsed by the subject. The Thought Disorder scale was found to perform poorly--no better than chance (Prevalence = 50%)--at correctly classifying patients as schizophrenic or nonschizophre

Personality profiles of the morbidly obese after vertical banded gastroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The authors attempted to determine if mental status could predict personality profiles, 18 months after surgery in morbidly obese patients. METHODS: Personality characteristics of 100 morbidly obese patients (85 female, 15 male) were analyzed after bariatric surgery (vertical banded gastroplasty). Patients were given the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II). Data were compared with a Spanish clinical population to validate the test in our country. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in Schizoid scale (P<0.0001), Paranoid scale (P<0.001), Histrionic scale (P<0

The use of the MCMI in the personality assessment of head-injured adults.

MCMI (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory) profiles of 79 head-injured patients were compared with self-report of personality change following head injury. Mean MCMI scale scores were highest on Scales D (Dysthymia), A (Anxiety), 6 (Antisocial), H (Somatoform), 5 (Narcissistic) and 7 (Compulsive). Taking only high-point codes above an adjusted base-rate score of 75, the sample showed most frequent elevations on A (Anxiety), D (Dysthymia), H (Somatoform), 5 (Narcissistic), 6 (Antisocial-Aggressive) and 8 (Passive-Aggressive), in order of cumulative frequency. Personality trait scales and clini

Personality measures in former heroin users receiving methadone or in protracted abstinence from opiates.

OBJECTIVE: Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) and detoxification to abstinence are among the most common treatment options for opiate-dependent patients. This paper compares personality traits in detoxified former heroin users and those on MMT in order to assess their relevance to treatment selection. METHOD: Twenty-six formerly heroin-dependent subjects receiving MMT (MM), 33 formerly heroin-dependent subjects withdrawn from MMT (MW), and 43 healthy controls were compared on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Psychopathology in alcohol- and cocaine-dependent patients: a comparison of findings from psychological testing.

Literature on cocaine-dependent patients studied through psychological testing remains limited, while there is much on assessment of alcoholics. This study replicated previous evaluation of cocaine-dependent patients, now compared with a group of alcoholics. Seventy-eight male and 21 female cocaine dependents and 70 male and 24 female alcoholics, hospitalized in a dual diagnosis program, were administered the MMPI, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II), Rorschach, Beck Depression Inventory, and Shipley Institute of Living Scale, after a 2-week stabilization period. Validity of the MCMI Drug Abuse Scale with drug abusing and psychiatric samples.

The validity of the Drug Abuse Scale (T) from the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) was studied by administering the MCMI to 75 White male veterans who were seeking treatment for opioid or cocaine dependence and 60 White male veterans without diagnoses of drug dependence who were receiving psychiatric care. Only (39.4%) of the drug-abusing sample was classified correctly by obtaining base rate (BR) scores above the clinical relevant cut-off of 74, whereas, only 12% of the psychiatric sample was misclassified by having obtained a BR above 74. The results suggest that the MCMI T Scale

Predictors of early dropout in treatment for gambling disorder: The role of personality disorders and clinical syndromes.

Several treatment options for gambling disorder (GD) have been tested in recent years; however dropout levels still remain high. This study aims to evaluate whether the presence of psychiatric comorbidities predicts treatment outcome according to Millon's evolutionary theory, following a six-month therapy for GD. The role of severity, duration of the disorder, typology of gambling (mainly online or offline) and pharmacological treatment were also analysed. The recruitment included 194 pathological gamblers (PGs) to be compared with 78 healthy controls (HCs). Psychological assessment included t

Electrodermal activity in anxiety disorders.

Forty anxiety patients diagnosed according to DSM-III-R criteria were included: panic disorder (n = 12), agoraphobia (n = 11), generalized anxiety disorder (n = 9), anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (n = 8) and compared with 12 controls. Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory and Symptom Checklist-90R symptom and personality scales did not separate the diagnostic groups. Electrodermal activity showed delayed habituation and high spontaneous skin resistance fluctuations in the panic and agoraphobia groups compared with the non-panic groups. The generalized anxiety disorder patients could n

A multitrait-multimethod analysis of the MCMI-II clinical syndrome scales.

Multitrait-multimethod procedures and factor analyses were utilized to assess convergent/discriminant validity of the revised version of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) clinical syndrome scales and effects of item overlap on scale performance. Except for the Delusional Disorder Scale (PP), convergent validity was supported, but poor discriminant validity was found for the Alcohol Dependence (B) scale, Drug Dependence (T) scale, and Scale PP. Item overlap did not influence performance for many scales. In fact, results indicate that some scales, such as Bipolar:Manic (N), may

Pre-injury psychiatric history, subacute symptoms and personality traits predict social reintegration at 3-month post-mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to identify whether the presence of a pre-injury psychiatric history, subacute post-concussive symptoms (PCS) and personality traits were predictive of less favorable social reintegration for 3 months following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). METHOD: A total of 76 patients with mTBI were included, and the presence of a pre-injury psychiatric history was identified from the medical chart. One-month post-accident, these patients completed the Millon Multiaxial Clinical Inventory, 3rd Edition assessing personality traits and the Rivermead Post-Concu

Psychological test characteristics of depressed and panic patients.

This study compared the psychological test performance of patients with major depression (MD) (n = 23), patients with panic disorder (PD) (n = 20), and normal subjects (n = 24). Results indicated that scores of normal subjects were significantly less pathological than those of both patient groups on almost all psychological test scales, but that the test performance of the two patient groups did not differ. The only difference between the two patient groups was on the level of self-reported and observer-rated depression. Both patient groups exhibited significant personality pathology, and the
