Histamine metabolism in nasal polyps.

We attempted to determine the relationship of nasal polyps to histamine (HA) metabolism. Compared to that in allergy-related nasal polyps and infection-related nasal polyps, the level of HA in aspirin-induced asthma-related polyps was significantly lower. Large differences between the groups were not observed in HA-synthesizing enzyme activity, but degradative enzyme activity was much higher in aspirin-induced asthma-related polyps than in other types of nasal polyps tested. These findings suggest the possibility that the amount of HA in polyps associated with aspirin-induced asthma was less b

Sphenochoanal polyp presenting with concomitant nasal polyps.

A sphenochoanal polyp is a rare lesion that originates in the sphenoid sinus. It occurs most often in adolescents and young adults. We present what to the best of our knowledge is the first reported case of a sphenochoanal polyp associated with concomitant nasal polyps. The patient was a 54-year-old man who presented with bilateral nasal obstruction, possible obstructive sleep apnea, and an altered voice, all of which had likely been caused by the presence of a massive left sphenochoanal polyp and bilateral grade III anterior and posterior ethmoid polyps. Because the patient had dilated cardio

Chronic Rhinosinusitis without Nasal Polyps.

Chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) is more prevalent than chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Certain diseases predispose to whereas others are associated with CRSsNP. Predisposing diseases include allergic and nonallergic upper and lower airway diseases, epithelial cell disorders, immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and some infectious diseases. In addition, environmental and host factors, examples of which include smoking, a higher incidence of abnormal biofilms, and innate immune defects, play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. CRSsNP is charac

Lysosomal exoglycosidases in nasal polyps.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal polyps are smooth outgrowths assuming a shape of grapes, formed from the nasal mucosa, limiting air flow by projecting into a lumen of a nasal cavity. Up to now the surgical resection is the best method of their treatment, but etiology and pathogenesis of the nasal polyps is not yet fully established. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was the assessment of the selected lysosomal exoglycosidases activity in the nasal polyps. In this study the activity of β-galactosidase, α-mannosidase and α-fucosidase was determined in the tissue of the nasal polyps obtained from 40 pa

Oral steroids for nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in The Cochrane Library in Issue 1, 2007.Benign nasal polyps are lesions that arise from the mucosa of the nasal cavity or one or more of the nasal sinuses. The presenting symptoms are nasal obstruction, watery anterior rhinorrhoea (excessive nasal secretions) or mucopurulent postnasal drip (or both), hyposmia and anosmia (reduced or absent sense of smell) with a concomitant alteration in taste and infrequently pain over the dorsum of the nose, forehead and cheeks. The main aim of treatment is to relieve these symptoms. The aet

Karyometric analysis of nasal polyps.

OBJECTIVES: Nuclear characteristics of epithelial cells in nasal polyps were analyzed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The slides of 35 patients who underwent surgery for nasal polyposis and 18 slides of normal mucosa were examined. The specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Tissue sections were analyzed by a CCD camera and the Karyotype Program of Human Cytogenetics Nomenclature System on a Macintosh computer (OS 9). Fifty epithelial cells in each slide were randomly selected and transferred to the automated karyotyping system and photographed. The diameters of the nuclei were measured and som

Update on nasal polyps: etiopathogenesis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasal polyps is a common ENT disease with high medical failure and recurrence rate, reflecting unknown pathogenesis. The present review is an update on the etiopathogenesis of nasal polyps. RECENT FINDING: Several mechanisms have been proposed for the formation of nasal polyps, including allergy, mucosal allergy, autonomic imbalance, nitric oxide, superantigens, infection, abnormal transepithelial ion transport, mucopolysaccharide abnormality, mechanical obstruction and epithelial rupture. Eosinophils comprises more than 60% of the cell population. Activated T cells, mast c

Medical treatment of nasal polyps.

Polyps are a multifactorial disease that affect the nasal lining and sinus mucosa, and in about one-third of the patients are associated with asthma. Polyps may occur in other respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia and immune deficiencies. Allergy does not predispose to polyp formation, although mast cell reactions appear to be important. This explains why corticosteroids are effective in controlling some cases and helping to prevent recurrence in some others. Polyp formation in the sinuses is due to three factors: (1) the balance between the inflammatory resp

Expression of IL-17 and syndecan-1 in nasal polyps and their correlation with nasal polyps.

Nasal polyp (NP) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal cavity and sinuses. Although some authors have suggested that NP is related to inflammatory factors such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-5, IL-8, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and IL-17, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and progression of NP remain obscure. This study investigated the expression and distribution of IL-17 and syndecan-1 in NP, and explored the roles of these two molecules in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal pol

Lymphocyte subpopulations and cytokines in nasal polyps: is there a local immune system in the nasal polyp?

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of chronic hyperplastic rhinosinusitis with massive nasal polyposis is still not entirely known. The present study evaluates the lymphocyte subpopulations and their production of cytokines using a technique for detection of intracytoplasmic cytokines by flow cytometry. This information may allow us to determine whether the source of these lymphocytes is from peripheral blood, the common mucosal immune system, or both. METHODS: Detection of intracytoplasmic cytokines by flow cytometry was performed using a fluoresceinated monoclonal antibody directed against CD4+ and

Correlation of sino-nasal outcome test and nasal polyp score in dupilumab-treated chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND: The alignment between objective scores and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) is underexplored. This study aimed to assess changes in Nasal Polyp Score (NPS) and Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT) scores in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients undergoing dupilumab treatment and explore correlations between these scores. METHODS: CRSwNP patients received dupilumab therapy for six months. SNOT-20 German Adapted Version (GAV)/SNOT-22 scores were assessed weekly, and NPS was measured at baseline and after one, three, and six months. Correlations were analyzed

Are PPIs beneficial for nasal polyps?

A new Annals feature in 2018, "From the Pages of AllergyWatch" is devoted to publishing synopses of Allergy and Asthma literature relevant to a topic of emphasis. These unbiased synopses and comments by our Editors have been previously printed in the AllergyWatch bimonthly newsletter, and it is our hope that presenting carefully selected article summaries and comments in the Annals will serve as a valuable educational resource for practicing allergists.
