[Vascular involvement in neurofibromatosis 1].

Vascular complications are rarely found in neurofibromatosis. The case of a female patient with this condition is reported, who showed systemic vascular involvement, with juvenile stroke, mesenteric infarction, and stenosis of the renal artery with consequent renal hypertension. The typical clinical and morphological features of vascular complications in neurofibromatosis are discussed.

A Review of Spinal Lesions in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 in a Large Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Center.

BACKGROUND: Spinal lesions are a known manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The aim of this retrospective review was to analyze and report the prevalence of spinal lesions on imaging in a large NF1 center. METHODS: The data were collected from a period of 62 months from a cohort of 514 patients. Data were collected from multidisciplinary team meeting reports that included radiologic reports of each patient investigating 20 distinct variables. The prevalence of each of these lesions was calculated, and any statistically significant associations were investigated using the χ2 test.

[Pheochromocytoma in Neurofibromatosis Type 1].

Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a hereditary disease with a wide variability of clinical manifestations, from the almost complete absence of typical symptoms to a multisystem lesion of the body. One of the possible clinical manifestations of this pathology is a pheochromocytoma - a tumor of the adrenal gland with the possible development of considerable cardiovascular complications. The article describes four cases of patients with pheochromocytoma as part of familial neurofibromatosis type 1, differing in clinical course from asymptomatic form to vivid paroxysmal manifestations. At the same time,

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Related Hydrocephalus.

The prevalence of hydrocephalus among patients with neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is estimated to be between 1 and 13%. Aqueductal webs, chiasmatic-hypothalamic tumors, and thalamic mass effect related to NF changes are the common causes of NF1-related hydrocephalus. Brain tumors and moyamoya syndrome may mimic the clinical presentation of hydrocephalus in children with NF1, and should be ruled out while evaluating children with headaches. Treatment of NF1-related hydrocephalus should be personally tailored, including shunts, endoscopic procedures such as septostomy and third ventriculostomy,

Vertebral scalloping in neurofibromatosis-1.

A 39-year-old male patient known to have neurofibromatosis-1, presented with sciatica and low back pain. At the age of 27, an MRI of the spine revealed widening of the lumbar canal due to posterior scalloping of the last 4 lumbar vertebrae. Repeat MRI and simple lateral lumbosacral plain film at the age of 39, revealed significant progression of the lumbosacral lesion. In view of the progression of the disease during the last 15 years, we opted for insertion of a lumbo-peritoneal (LP) shunt to decrease the CSF pressure, which is the most probable cause of scalloping. We shied away from lumbar

[Genetics of type 1 neurofibromatosis].

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by cafè au lait spots, multiple neurofibromas and Lisch nodules of the iris, with marked variability of expression. The NF1 gene is located at 17q11.2, spans 350 kb genomic DNA and comprises 60 exons encoding a 11-13 kb transcript (Viskochil et al.). Four alternatively spliced NF1 transcripts have been identified and they show differential expression in various tissues. NF1 gene is a member of the tumor suppressor gene family. The protein encoded by NF1, neurofibromin, has a domain homologous to the GTPase activatin

NF1 gene and neurofibromatosis 1.

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen disease, is an autosomal dominant condition caused by mutations of the NF1 gene, which is located at chromosome 17q11.2. NF1 is believed to be completely penetrant, but substantial variability in expression of features occurs. Diagnosis of NF1 is based on established clinical criteria. The presentation of many of the clinical features is age dependent. The average life expectancy of patients with NF1 is probably reduced by 10-15 years, and malignancy is the most common cause of death. The prevalence of clinically diagnosed NF1 ranges …

Malignancy in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) represents a major risk factor for development of malignancy, particularly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST), optic gliomas, other gliomas, and leukemias. The oncologist will see NF1 patients referred for treatment of malignancy, and should be alert to the possibility of undiagnosed NF1 among patients with cancer. Brain tumors tend to have a more indolent course in NF1 than in the general population, and hence are best managed conservatively. MPNST, in contrast, do not respond to standard chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The most effective treatm

Neurofibromatosis type 1 growth charts.

Growth abnormalities such as macrocephaly and short stature have been described and are considered a consistent finding in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), one of the most common autosomal dominant disorders in man. We present here a clinical study on the growth profile of a sample of NF1 patients collected through a population-based registry that covers three contiguous regions of North-East Italy (NEI-NF Registry). Auxometric traits of 528 NF1 patients have been measured with the aim of drawing growth charts for height, weight, and head circumference (OFC). Height velocity charts were based o

COVID-19 in people with neurofibromatosis 1, neurofibromatosis 2, or schwannomatosis.

PURPOSE: People with pre-existing conditions may be more susceptible to severe COVID-19 when infected by SARS-CoV-2. The relative risk and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in people with rare diseases such as neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), or schwannomatosis (SWN) is unknown. METHODS: We investigated the proportions of people with NF1, NF2, or SWN in the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) electronic health record data set who had a positive test result for SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19. RESULTS: The cohort sizes in N3C were 2501 (NF1), 665 (NF2), and 762 (SWN

Co-Manifestations of Genital Neurofibromatosis in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Genitourinary presentation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is rare, amongst which bladder involvement is the most common. Sporadic case reports do highlight infrequent external genitalia involvement in NF-1. We present a 21-year-old male with prior childhood history of partial cystectomy for an NF-1 related bladder tumor, who more recently presented with gross hematuria. Workup revealed multiple ganglioneuromas involving the bladder, prostate, and penis, and the patient underwent radical cystoprostatectomy and penile mass excision. Recurrences of previously excised urologic tumors or new tu

Plexiform neurofibromatosis of penis: a rare presentation of type 1 neurofibromatosis.

Although more than 100 cases of genitourinary neurofibromas have been reported, only 16 cases of solitary neurofibroma arising in the penis have been reported in English literature. There can be diffuse or localised pelvic involvement in cases of neurofibromatosis and sometimes these masses can extend into and disfigure the external genitalia. We report an unusual case of plexiform neurofibroma arising from penis and review the literature on penile neurofibromas.

Headaches in patients with neurofibromatosis-1.

An analysis of patients followed with a diagnosis of neurofibromatosis-1 and headache was conducted. Characterization of headache type was done after chart review of 81 patients with neurofibromatosis-1 and headache. Consent was obtained for subsequent telephone interviews using a standardized questionnaire concerning the onset, characteristics, timing, triggers, and associated symptoms of the patients' headaches. Data was summarized and tabulated. Of 132 patients with neurofibromatosis-1, 81 were identified with any headache by screening history. Recurrent headaches were present in 77% of pat
