Application of a microbial and pathogen source tracking toolbox to identify infrastructure problems in stormwater drainage networks: a case study.

Water scarcity and increasing urbanization are forcing municipalities to consider alternative water sources, such as stormwater, to fill in water supply gaps or address hydromodification of receiving urban streams. Mounting evidence suggests that stormwater is often contaminated with human feces, even in stormwater drainage systems separate from sanitary sewers. Pinpointing sources of human contamination in drainage networks is challenging given the diverse sources of fecal pollution that can impact these systems and the non-specificity of traditional fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) for identif

One-at-a-time sensitivity analysis of pollutant loadings to subsurface properties for the assessment of soil and groundwater pollution potential.

Chemical leak was numerically simulated for four chemical substances: benzene (light non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL)), tetrachloroethylene (dense NAPL), phenol (soluble in water), and pentachlorophenol (white crystalline solid) in a hypothetical subsurface leak situation using a multiphase compositional transport model. One metric ton of chemical substances was assumed to leak at a point 3.51 m above the water table in a homogeneous unconfined aquifer which had the depth to water table of 7.135 m, the hydraulic gradient of 0.00097, the recharge rate of 0.7 mm/day, and the permeability of 2.92

Stimulation of fecal bacteria in ambient waters by experimental inputs of organic and inorganic phosphorus.

Fecal microbial pollution of recreational and shellfishing waters is a major human health and economic issue. Microbial pollution sourced from stormwater runoff is especially widespread, and strongly associated with urbanization. However, non-point source nutrient pollution is also problematic, and may come from sources different from fecal-derived pollution (i.e. fertilization of farm fields, lawns and gardens, and ornamental urban areas). Fecal bacteria require nutrients; thus the impact of such nutrient loading on survival and abundance of fecal coliform bacteria in ambient waters was exper

Application of iron-carbon constructed wetlands for treating complex agricultural wastewater under pesticide and antibiotic stress: Performance and mechanisms.

Agricultural non-point source pollution often causes combined pesticide-antibiotic threat, such as atrazine (ATZ) and tetracycline (TC), originating from farmland drainage, livestock wastewater, and aquaculture effluents. Although iron-carbon constructed wetlands (CWs) show potential for pollution control, their performance and underlying mechanisms under the co-stress of ATZ and TC remain poorly understood. This study compared the purification mechanisms of complex agricultural wastewater in iron-carbon CWs modified with differently activated biochar. The acid-activated group (CW-FeC-Ac) achi

Suspended Particulate Matter Mediates PFAS Source-to-Sink Transport and Multiphase Partitioning During Extreme Hydrological Events.

The mechanisms governing suspended particulate matter (SPM)-mediated partitioning of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at water-solid interfaces during extreme hydrological events remain poorly understood. This study elucidates the spatiotemporal source-sink dynamics and multiphase partitioning mechanisms of SPM-mediated PFAS before, during, and after flood events. The results identified SPM as a critical reservoir for C8-C11 PFAS. During floods, SPM functions as an exogenous carrier, transporting surface-derived PFAS into rivers via pump station overflows and exhibiting strong floccu

Source Apportionment of Heavy Metals in Stream Sediments from the Hilly Western Wanda Mountains Based on PCA-APCS-MLR.

The hilly terrain at the western foot of the Wanda Mountains boasts intricate geological conditions, compounded by long-term mineral extraction and farming activities. The multi-sourced heavy metals stored within stream sediments create substantial obstacles to accurate source apportionment and targeted risk mitigation. In this work, stream sediment samples were collected across the study watershed to test concentrations of eight heavy metals: As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn. Pollution and ecological risk assessments were implemented via the pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index

Time series evidence on air quality transitions under urban shock during COVID-19 shutdown in Delhi-NCR, India.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated nationwide lockdown provided an unprecedented natural experiment to investigate how abrupt reductions in anthropogenic activities influence urban air quality. Although several studies have quantified changes in pollutant concentrations during the lockdown, the nonlinear temporal transitions and persistence of these changes after reopening remain poorly understood. This study investigates the evolution of air quality across Delhi-NCR, India, one of the world's most polluted metropolitan regions, by examining three distinct phases associated with the COVI

Emerging challenges of air pollution and particulate matter in China, India, and Pakistan and mitigating solutions.

This study examines point and non-point sources of air pollution and particulate matter and their associated socioeconomic and health impacts in South Asian countries, primarily India, China, and Pakistan. The legislative frameworks, policy gaps, and targeted solutions are also scrutinized. The major cities in these countries have surpassed the permissible limits defined by WHO for sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide. As a result, they are facing widespread health problems, disabilities, and causalities at extreme events. Populations in these countries are

Sources, pathways, and relative risks of contaminants in surface water and groundwater: a perspective prepared for the Walkerton inquiry.

On a global scale, pathogenic contamination of drinking water poses the most significant health risk to humans, and there have been countless numbers of disease outbreaks and poisonings throughout history resulting from exposure to untreated or poorly treated drinking water. However, significant risks to human health may also result from exposure to nonpathogenic, toxic contaminants that are often globally ubiquitous in waters from which drinking water is derived. With this latter point in mind, the objective of this commission paper is to discuss the primary sources of toxic contaminants in s

Revealing chlorinated ethene transformation hotspots in a nitrate-impacted hyporheic zone.

Hyporheic zones are increasingly thought of as natural bioreactors, capable of transforming and attenuating groundwater pollutants present in diffuse baseflow. An underappreciated scenario in the understanding of contaminant fate in hyporheic zones is the interaction between point-source trichloroethene (TCE) plumes and ubiquitous, non-point source pollutants such as nitrate. This study aims to conceptualise critical biogeochemical gradients in the hyporheic zone which govern the export potential of these redox-sensitive pollutants from carbon-poor, oxic aquifers. Within the TCE plume discharg

Assessing health risks and socioeconomic disparities associated with ambient air pollution and point sources across the United States.

Air quality in the United States (U.S.) has significantly improved over the last few decades. Nevertheless, many parts of the country still suffer from high levels of air pollution, including numerous non-attainment areas. This study aims to provide a systematic analysis to quantify the impact of air pollution on human health across the entire U.S. By combining the 2023 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention health surveys, criteria air pollutants, and socioeconomic status at the census tract level, we seek to (1) assess the impacts of air pollution on human health, and (2) investigate env

Contrast antibiotic activities from muddy and sandy coasts and their potential controls.

Muddy and sandy coastlines account for approximately 45% of the world's ice-free coastlines, facing significant ecological risks from antibiotic pollution due to overuse. This study elucidates how fundamental differences in sediment composition govern the distinct transport and fate of antibiotics in these contrasting coastal systems. Muddy coasts primarily consisted of fine-grained sediments with higher water contents, whereas sandy coasts are characterized by coarse-grained sand and gravel with better water permeability. Porewater acts as a bridge between overlying water and sediment, playin

Predictive modeling of nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in rivers using a machine learning framework: A case study in an urban-rural transitional area in Wenzhou China.

Rapid urbanization in China since 1980 generated environmental pressures of non-point source pollution (NPSP) and increased wide public concerns. Excessive quantities of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a significant source of aquatic pollution, despite of their roles as essential nutritional elements for aquatic life processes. In this study, we present a new framework using random forest (RF) as a powerful machine learning algorithm driven by geo-datasets to estimate and map the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) at a spatial resolution for the Wen-Rui Tang River (WRT
