Rethinking guidelines for VTE risk among nursing home residents: a population-based study merging medical record detail with standardized nursing home assessments.

BACKGROUND: Nursing home (NH) residents are at increased risk for both VTE and bleeding from pharmacologic prophylaxis. Construction of prophylaxis guidelines is hampered by NH-specific limitations with VTE case identification and characterization of risk. We addressed these limitations by merging detailed provider-linked Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) medical records with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Minimum Data Set (MDS) NH assessments. METHODS: This population-based nested case-control study identified all Olmsted County, Minnesota, residents with first-lifetime VTE Oc

The SLIPPS Learning Event Recording Tool for students in Advanced Practice Nursing: A translation and content validation study.

INTRODUCTION: Patient safety is crucial in healthcare, yet over three million people die annually worldwide due to adverse events. To learn from adverse events and patient safety incidents, they need to be identified, examined, and reflected upon. Therefore, the SLIPPS Learning Event Recording Tool (SLERT) was developed to promote learning from patient safety events, both negative and positive. This study aimed to translate and validate the SLERT, which is already available in seven languages, for German-speaking countries. METHODS: The validation study involved a structured 4-phase blind-bac

Characteristics and contributors to workarounds in the electronic health record system among inpatient nurses: Secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The electronic health record system is known to have usability issues, in part, because of a mismatch between the design of electronic health record workflows and the realities of how workflows occur in clinical practice. In response to reducing this mismatch, healthcare workers, including nurses, have developed and implemented electronic health record workarounds. However, the nature and contributors of these workarounds are loosely understood, particularly among nurses, who make up the most common type of electronic health record user. OBJECTIVES: 1) To identify and characterize

Nursing students' self-evaluation using a video recording of foley catheterization: effects on students' competence, communication skills, and learning motivation.

An opportunity for a student to evaluate his or her own performance enhances self-awareness and promotes self-directed learning. Using three outcome measures of competency of procedure, communication skills, and learning motivation, the effects of self-evaluation using a video recording of the student's Foley catheterization was investigated in this study. The students in the experimental group (n = 20) evaluated their Foley catheterization performance by reviewing the video recordings of their own performance, whereas students in the control group (n = 20) received written evaluation guidelin
