Postprandial triglyceridaemia is modulated by insulin resistance but not by grade of obesity in abdominal and morbid obese subjects.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with high cardiovascular risk. Postprandial lipidaemia has been associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Our aim was to identify whether anthropometric parameters, insulin resistance (IR) and/or fasting plasma triglycerides may determine postprandial changes in lipoprotein concentrations in abdominal and morbid obese subjects. METHODS: We have studied 20 non-diabetic, normolipidaemic subjects with abdominal obesity, 20 morbid obese subjects and 20 healthy individuals, that have similar age and gender. In all of them a standardised oral fat load test (OFLT

Obesity, Abdominal Obesity and Chronic Kidney Disease in Young Adults: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

Obesity has become a pandemic. It is one of the strongest risk-factors of new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the effects of obesity and abdominal obesity on the risk of developing CKD in young adults has not been elucidated. From a nationwide health screening database, we included 3,030,884 young adults aged 20-39 years without CKD during a baseline examination in 2009-2010, who could follow up during 2013-2016. Patients were stratified into five levels based on their baseline body mass index (BMI) and six levels based on their waist circumference (WC; 5-cm increments). The prima

OPTIMISATION OF ABDOMINAL CT EXAM PROTOCOLS IN OBESE PATIENTS.

Obesity is marked as a global epidemic, and the number of obese people is steadily increasing. This disease affects various aspects of health care, which also includes radiodiagnostic imaging modalities. CT exams of bariatric patients are becoming common in radiological practice and bring problems of both technical and physical nature. Obesity affects the quality of CT images, therefore, optimisation of the used CT protocols is important, which is difficult to be carried out on patients, because of the principles of radiation protection and ethical point of view. This study evaluates and compa

Abdominal obesity and the risk of esophageal and gastric cardia carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal adenocarcinoma is rapidly increasing in incidence. Body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor, but its distribution does not reflect the demographic distribution of the cancer (which is highest among White men). Abdominal obesity patterns may explain this discordance, but no studies exist to date. METHODS: Nested case-control study within 206,974 members of the Kaiser Permanente multiphasic health checkup cohort; subjects received detailed questionnaires, a standardized examination including BMI and anthropometric measurements, and follow-up of esophageal and cardia cancers

Impact of excessive abdominal obesity on brain microstructural abnormality in schizophrenia.

Significant evidence links obesity and schizophrenia (SZ), but the brain associations are still largely unclear. 48 people with SZ were divided into two subgroups: patients with lower waist circumference (SZ-LWC: n = 24) and patients with higher waist circumference (SZ-HWC: n = 24). Healthy controls (HC) were included for comparison (HC: n = 27). Using tract-based spatial statistics, we compared fractional anisotropy (FA) of the whole-brain white matter skeleton between these three groups (SZ-LWC, SZ-HWC, HC). Using Free Surfer, we compared whole-brain cortical thickness and the selected subco
