Ambulatory treatment of psoriasis: combined use of occlusive dressings with locacorten tar at night and 'open' treatment with locasalen during the day.

Fifty patients with refractory psoriasis were treated with a combined method consisting in the application of occlusive dressings with Locacorten Tar ointment at night and of 'open' treatment (without occlusive dressings) with Locasalen ointment during the day. The aim of this trial was to obtain the benefit of the occlusive-dressing method without having to hospitalize the patients. The mean time required for the eradication of psoriatic scales was 3.46 days, while that needed for complete recovery was 14 days. The results clearly indicated that this combined approach has all the advantages o

[Topical treatment of onychomycosis by occlusive dressing using bifonazole cream containing 40% urea].

Topical treatment with an antifungal agent was performed in 70 cases of onychomycosis (69 cases of tinea unguium and 1 case of Candida onychomycosis). The patients were treated every night by occlusive dressing using bifonazole cream containing 40% urea, and then by simple application of 1% bifonazole solution in the morning. During the treatment period, the softened affected nails were removed as completely as possible with nail clippers and files. The nails were observed every two weeks, and the efficacy was evaluated after 12 weeks. Two cases were excluded and 28 cases dropped out leaving 4

Comparison of silver-embedded occlusive dressings and negative pressure wound therapy following total joint arthroplasty in high BMI patients: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: High body mass index (BMI) and wound drainage following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) can lead to wound healing complications and periprosthetic joint infection. Silver-embedded occlusive dressings and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) have been shown to reduce these complications. The purpose of this prospective trial was to compare the effect of silver-embedded dressings and NPWT on wound complications in patients with BMI ≥ 35 m/kg2 undergoing TJA. METHODS: We conducted a randomized control trial of patients who had a BMI > 35 m/kg2 and were undergoing primary TJA betwe

Occlusive dressing for large soft tissue defects following soft tissue tumor excision.

BACKGROUND: Reconstructive surgery using pedicles or free muscle-skin flaps and skin grafting reduces wound complications and promotes favorable limb function; however, the sacrifice of normal tissue remains problematic and complicated. Occlusive dressings are widely employed for management of injuries, burns, and surgical wounds. However, their effectiveness for treating soft tissue defects following a soft tissue tumor excision has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an occlusive dressing treatment method for soft tissue defect

Use of negative pressure wound therapy as an occlusive dressing on a skin graft in a patient with hostile abdomen.

BACKGROUND: In hostile abdomen the abdominal cavity is exposed, with retracted edges compacted into a single block of fibrous tissue that does not allow for adequate dissection or separation. After the inflammation is controlled, definitive closure of the abdomen can be attempted. One closure technique includes the use of skin grafts, which requires an adequate recipient site. Several therapies are used to promote granulation, such as dressings, antiseptic solutions, and negative pressure wound therapy. However, there is limited evidence of the use of these therapies in a hostile abdomen. CAS

Occlusive dressing-induced secretomes influence the migration and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts differently.

BACKGROUND: Fingertip injuries treated with occlusive dressings (ODs) lead to nearly scar-free, functionally, and aesthetically pleasing results. We hypothesized that paracrine factors in the wound fluid (secretome) may influence migration and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and fibroblasts and modulate the wound-healing process. METHODS: We could collect wound fluid samples from 4 fingertip injuries and 7 split skin donor sites at the 5th day during dressing change. Blood serum samples served as controls. The proliferation rate of MSCs and fibroblasts (HS27) was continuously m

Toxic tacrolimus levels after application of topical tacrolimus and use of occlusive dressings in two bone marrow transplant recipients with cutaneous graft-versus-host disease.

Tacrolimus, a macrolide immunosuppressant, is used topically for the treatment of cutaneous manifestations of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) for rapid, symptomatic relief of pruritus and erythema. Despite the manufacturer's product information reporting minimal systemic effects of topical tacrolimus, this has not been evaluated in patients with cutaneous GVHD and with occlusive dressings. We describe two patients with cutaneous GVHD who developed toxic tacrolimus levels after receiving several applications of tacrolimus ointment along with occlusive dressings to enhance skin effectiveness. Occlusive dressing versus local flap coverage for the treatment of fingertip amputations with exposed bone: a comparative study.

We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of 54 patients treated with occlusive dressings (OD) (27 patients) or local flap (LF) coverage (28 patients) for fingertip amputations with bone exposure. All patients healed completely within a mean of 5 weeks in the OD group and 3.5 weeks in the LF group. At a mean follow-up of 26 months (range 12-38), 2-point discrimination was significantly better in the OD group (4 mm) than the LF group (6 mm). Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) stiffness was more common in the LF group, affecting one-third of patients. A cost analysis showed that ODs were 6.5 ti

Standardized Ventriculostomy Protocol without an Occlusive Dressing: Results of an Observational Study in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related infections are a potentially life-threatening complication of having an external ventricular drain (EVD). Patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) are at increased risk of infection associated with prolonged ventricular drainage, with a reported mean infection rate of 6%. We report the EVD-associated infection rate among patients with aSAH managed with a unique standardized treatment protocol without an occlusive EVD dressing. METHODS: Patients with aSAH admitted from August 2015 through August 2017 were retrospectively analyzed for EVD placement. C

Semi-occlusive dressing for the treatment of fingertip amputations with exposed bone: quantity and quality of soft-tissue regeneration.

Nineteen fingertip amputations with exposed bone were treated with a semi-occlusive dressing. The quantity and quality of the regenerated soft tissue was examined. In all 19 fingers there was sufficient uncomplicated healing such that secondary surgical procedures were not needed. At follow-up 6-18 months after the injury, soft tissue thickness around the bone of the distal phalanx measured 6.0 mm (SD 1.6) on the palmar aspect (opposite side 7.0 mm (SD 0.8)) and 4.2 mm (SD 1.7) distally (opposite side 4.5 mm (SD 0.8)). The two-point discrimination was 4 mm (SD 2) (opposite side 3 mm (SD 1)). T
