Are the ocular hypertension and glaucoma two different clinical entities? Recent researches show that ocular hypertension can have an evolution period, of about five years, without clinical manifestations of glaucoma. In ocular hypertension, the atrophy of the retinal nerve precedes with many years the appearance of the perimetric deficits. Retinographies in non-erythro light show a destruction, up to 40%, of the nerve fibres of the retina without evident perimetric modifications. The conclusion is reached that intraocular hypertension is only an incipient stage of a glaucoma not yet detected

Nineteen patients with symmetrical ocular hypertension and symmetrical cupping of the optic nerves were made asymmetric with respect to intraocular pressure for one to five years by unilateral topical treatment with epinephrine hydrochloride. There is a great need for the development of mouse models of ocular hypertension. Here, we describe an inducible mouse model of ocular hypertension that produces a homogeneous intraocular pressure (IOP) response and can be induced in any mouse strain of choice without the need for extensive breeding. The procedure utilizes an ocular hypertension and glaucoma-relevant transgene, bioactivated TGFβ2, and an adenovirus 5 virus with select tropism for the trabecular meshwork (TM).

A group of 55 subjects with ocular hypertension were followed-up after 15 years. They were detected at a glaucoma screening on the island of Falster between 2031 volunteer blood donors, and they had an applanation pressure of greater than or equal to 20 mmHg in one or both eyes. A primigravida in her 3rd trimester experienced sudden vision loss. She underwent an emergency caesarean section due to pre-eclampsia, which was complicated by abruptio placentae, leading to fetal demise in the 32nd week of gestation. On examination, she was found to have hypertensive retinochoroidopathy with massive retinal and choroidal infarcts. Treatment with oral steroids resulted in gradual and partial visual recovery over 2 months.
