BACKGROUND: There are significant discrepancies in the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) reported in the literature. We aimed to determine the ultrasonographic imaging features of ONSD and ophthalmic vessels in a healthy population, using a standardized protocol, and to estimate the effect of demographics and positioning changes on imaging measurements.
METHODS: We measured the mean values of the ONSD in supine and sitting position and the Doppler imaging parameters of the ophthalmic, central retinal and short posterior ciliary arteries. Inter-observer reliability was assessed using intracla

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) involving the optic nerve sheath are rare and often present subtly. We report a case of a woman in her 50s with a month-long history of left eye redness, swelling and watering. Examination revealed proptosis and chemosis without vision loss or cranial nerve deficits. MRI showed a dilated superior ophthalmic vein (SOV), initially suggesting a carotico-cavernous fistula. However, digital subtraction angiography confirmed a slow-flow intraorbital dAVF supplied by the left ophthalmic and accessory meningeal arteries, draining via the SOV. Conservative managemen

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of applying a protocol for image selection and the number of images required for adequate quantification of corneal nerve pathology using in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCCM).
METHODS: IVCCM was performed in 35 participants by a single examiner. For each participant, 4 observers used a standardized protocol to select 6 central corneal nerve images to assess the inter-observer variability. Furthermore, images were selected by a single observer on two occasions to assess intra-observer variability and the effect of sample size was assessed by comparing 6 wit

BACKGROUND: There are no large studies reporting oncological or survival outcomes for patients diagnosed with perineural spread (PNS) of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) via the ophthalmic nerve (V1). Where orbital exenteration may be necessary for curative treatment, it is critical to have survival data with which the morbidity associated with surgical treatment can be justified. Furthermore, with the emerging treatment option of immunotherapy, current standard of care outcomes are needed to help guide future trial design and eventually changed management guidelines.

BACKGROUND: We describe a patient who developed delayed blindness of the left eye at 5 weeks after endovascular coiling of a large ophthalmic aneurysm.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 44-year-old male was admitted with visual decline due to compression of the optic nerve by a large ophthalmic aneurysm. The aneurysm was treated by endovascular coiling, but visual function was unchanged. One month and 7 days later, the patient developed sudden blindness of the affected eye, despite complete angiographical occlusion of the aneurysm. Surgical exploration in an attempt to restore vision showed a fully thrombo

PURPOSE: To evaluate the inter- and intraobserver reliability of the CADS score, a previously described facial nerve grading instrument for ophthalmic grading of facial nerve palsy.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional validation study. Two clinicians independently assessed and graded each patient on the same day, masked to each other's grading. Four parameters are assessed in the CADS scale: Cornea (0-3, ±a), static Asymmetry (0-2), Dynamic function (0-3), and Synkinesis (0-2). One clinician reassessed the patients and performed the grading again at a minimum time interval of 1 hour later. A w

Clinical manifestations of the new coronavirus infection can vary greatly and affect different organs and systems. Despite the lack of convincing data on the possible direct damage to the structures of the eyeball by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, indirect involvement of the organ of vision both in the acute period of the disease, during the period of convalescence, and as a part of the post-COVID syndrome is common in clinical practice. The condition of the ocular surface is not given much attention during the treatment of the main disease, especially in severe cases, which can lead to serious complic

OBJECTIVES: Varicella zoster virus reactivation can cause permanent histological changes in the central and peripheral nervous system. Neural inflammatory changes or damage to the dorsal root ganglia sensory nerve fibers during reactivation can lead to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). For PHN of the first division of the fifth cranial nerve (ophthalmic division of the trigeminal ganglion), there is evidence of inflammatory change in the ganglion and adjacent ocular neural structures. First division trigeminal nerve PHN can prove to be difficult and sometimes even impossible to manage despite the

In the researches of the innervation relationship between trigeminal ganglion and a particular structure in the head, it is usually necessary to apply neural tracers into the ganglion for anterograde nerve tracing study or perform bilateral trigeminal nerve transecting for degeneration study. A common surgical approach for exposing these structures in the rat was to remove a piece of skull and a portion of brain. While investigating the innervation of rat's pineal gland from its trigeminal ganglion, we used a subtemporal fossa approach, whereby the mortality of the animal was remarkably reduce

BACKGROUND: Neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage are commonly linked to a palsy of the cranial nerve in close proximity to the aneurysm or to chronic intracranial hypertension.
CASE REPORT: A patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to a rupture of an intracranial right ophthalmic segment internal carotid artery aneurysm presented with an acute-onset contralateral abducens nerve palsy. There were no clinical or radiologic features of chronic intracranial hypertension. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a co-existent ectatic basilar artery on the left side

BACKGROUND: Carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms arise from the internal carotid artery between the distal dural ring and the origin of the posterior communicating artery. The surgical treatment of these aneurysms usually requires anterior clinoidectomy. However, this procedure is not without complications. In the present report, we have described optic nerve mobilization after optic foraminotomy as an alternative to anterior clinoidectomy to clip superior carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms.
METHODS: We have reported the cases of 3 patients with superior carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms who had undergone surgi
