Path integration from optic flow and the role of eye movements.

Optic flow provides critical visual information for self-motion perception, including direction (heading), speed, and travel distance (path integration). While eye movements are naturally elicited during optic flow, most lab-based studies of human path integration require central fixation, potentially altering perception. Here, we examined whether free eye movements improve distance discrimination compared with fixation, testing the hypothesis that oculomotor signals may support oculomotor odometry. The participants viewed two consecutive optic flow stimuli simulating forward self-motion acros

Intermittent control and retinal optic flow when maintaining a curvilinear path.

The topic of how humans navigate using vision has been studied for decades. Research has identified the emergent patterns of retinal optic flow from gaze behavior may play an essential role in human curvilinear locomotion. However, the link towards control has been poorly understood. Lately, it has been shown that human locomotor behavior is corrective, formed from intermittent decisions and responses. A simulated virtual reality experiment was conducted where fourteen participants drove through a texture-rich simplistic road environment with left and right curve bends. The goal was to investi

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy during optic flow with and without fixation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals with visual vertigo describe symptoms of dizziness, disorientation, and/or impaired balance in environments with conflicting visual and vestibular information or complex visual stimuli. Physical therapists often prescribe habituation exercises using optic flow to treat these symptoms, but there are no evidence-based guidelines for delivering optic flow and it is unclear how the brain processes such stimuli. The purposes of this study were to use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore cerebral activation during optic flow, and determine if v

Standing balance responses and habituation to sinusoidal optic flow virtual reality perturbations.

This study investigated the effects of prolonged virtual reality (VR) optic flow exposure on standing balance, focusing on how optic flow parameters influence balance responses and the potential for habituation. While short-term responses to optic flow are well-documented, the impact of extended VR immersion (up to 60 min) on balance remains poorly understood. Twenty healthy young adults were exposed to sinusoidal optic flow stimuli in a novel VR environment, with different velocities (0.1, 1, 10 m/s) and frequencies (0.125, 0.25, 0.5 Hz). Balance responses were assessed using a force plate to

Optic flow neurons in area PEc integrate eye and head position signals.

Neurons in area PEc, a visual area located in the superior parietal lobule, are activated by optic flow stimuli. An important issue is whether PEc neurons are able to integrate multimodal signals, such as those related to optic flow selectivity with those about eye and head position. The aim of this study was to assess if angle of gaze and/or head rotation modify the spatial representation of the focus of expansion (FOE), varying FOE, fixation point and head position in space. We found that the rotation of head modulated the firing activity of PEc optic flow neurons. The head position also cha

Eye-centered representation of optic flow tuning in the ventral intraparietal area.

Reference frames are important for understanding sensory processing in the cortex. Previous work showed that vestibular heading signals in the ventral intraparietal area (VIP) are represented in body-centered coordinates. In contrast, vestibular heading tuning in the medial superior temporal area (MSTd) is approximately head centered. We considered the hypothesis that visual heading signals (from optic flow) in VIP might also be transformed into a body-centered representation, unlike visual heading tuning in MSTd, which is approximately eye centered. We distinguished among eye-centered, head-c

Optic flow processing for the assessment of object movement during ego movement.

The vast majority of research on optic flow (retinal motion arising because of observer movement) has focused on its use in heading recovery and guidance of locomotion. Here we demonstrate that optic flow processing has an important role in the detection and estimation of scene-relative object movement during self movement. To do this, the brain identifies and globally discounts (i.e., subtracts) optic flow patterns across the visual scene-a process called flow parsing. Remaining motion can then be attributed to other objects in the scene. In two experiments, stationary observers viewed radial

Perception of plane orientation from self-generated and passively observed optic flow.

We investigated the perception of three-dimensional plane orientation--focusing on the perception of tilt--from optic flow generated by the observer's active movement around a simulated stationary object, and compared the performance to that of an immobile observer receiving a replay of the same optic flow. We found that perception of plane orientation is more precise in the active than in the immobile case. In particular, in the case of the immobile observer, the presence of shear in optic flow drastically diminishes the precision of tilt perception, whereas in the active observer, this decre

The effect of diabetic retinopathy on standing posture during optic flow stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy is a principal cause of visual damage and blindness, in which laser treatment offers proven therapy. The progressive degeneration of the retina, secondary to diabetes, is believed to cause postural instability although this is not well documented. The aim of this research was to assess how optic flow stimuli contribute to the control of stance in people with impaired retinal functions. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does the different retinal functionality correspond to different specific patterns of movements and muscles recruitment? METHODS: Postural mechanisms and mot

Optical flow based waveform for the assessment of the vocal fold vibrations.

Assessing vocal fold (VF) vibrations is important for the diagnosis of several diseases, and is made possible through the analysis of videoendoscopy recordings. However, the visual analysis of these recordings is hard due to the high acquisition rate. For this reason, it is commonly used to extract the laryngeal activity information from the recordings and represent it in a way suitable to be visually analyzed. Waveforms, images and playbacks are examples of representations reported in the literature. The main limitation of some of them is the lack of precisely locating the pathology within th

A Molecular Imprinted Polymer as a Flow-Through Optical Sensor for Oxazepam.

A flow-through optosensing system for oxazepam recognition with fluorescence detection was performed by means of a molecular imprinted polymer based on its acid hydrolysis product, 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone. The synthesis was conducted via a noncovalent imprinting methodology, using methacrylic acid as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linking agent. Hydrolysis (types and concentration of acids), polymer retention capacity, binding properties, and elution (selectivity and reversibility) conditions were optimized. The selected molecular imprinted polymer had

A theory for treating dizziness due to optical flow (visual vertigo).

Virtual reality (VR) training that provides optic flow stimuli and visuo-vestibular conflict has been suggested as a way to treat patients with inappropriate visual dependence (sometimes called visual vertigo even though spinning sensation is often absent). We propose a simple framework based on a hypothesis that the degree of dizziness depends on the offsetting between the destabilizing effect of optical flow and the stabilizing effect provided by stationary objects in the visual field. We define a total destabilizing potential (TDP), which is the ratio of the destabilizing effect over the st

Event-based Optical Flow Using Spatio-temporal Registration.

Optical flow forms a fundamental information for various motion related vision problems: e.g., SLAM, visual odometry, and object motion estimation. Event cameras are ideal vision sensors for on-line, dynamic tasks that require optical flow estimation, as they have high temporal resolution, high dynamic range and low latency. However, efficiently decoding optical flow from events for high frequency operation while maintaining accuracy is still an open problem. Batch-based optical flow algorithms (CNN or contrast maximisation) accumulate event data over a short period of time and achieve state-o

Estimating Retinal Blood Flow Velocities by Optical Coherence Tomography.

IMPORTANCE: While optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography has been considered to evaluate retinal capillary blood flow instead of fluorescein angiography, the reflectance pattern of blood vessels on structural OCT might also provide retinal capillary flow data in the absence of fluorescein angiography. This potential has been insufficiently explored, despite promising data concerning a possible relationship between the reflectance pattern of blood vessels and their perfusion velocity in a laboratory setting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of retinal blood flow velocity estimation
