Evaluation of Paecilomyces lilacinus as a Biocontrol Agent of Meloidogyne javanica on Tobacco.

The efficacy of the nematode parasite Paecilomyces lilacinus, alone and in combination with phenamiphos and ethoprop, for controlling the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica on tobacco and the ability of this fungus to colonize in soil under field conditions were evaluated for 2 years in microplots. Combinations and individual treatments of the fungus grown on autoclaved wheat seed, M. javanica eggs (76,000 per plot), and nematicides were applied to specified microplots at the time of transplanting tobacco the first year. Vetch was planted as a winter cover crop, and the fungus and nematic

Cutaneous ulcerations caused by Paecilomyces variotii in a renal transplant recipient.

Skin infections caused by Paecilomyces species have been rarely described in patients with solid organ transplantation. Cutaneous manifestations are highly variable and include erythematous macules, nodules, pustules, and vesicular and necrotic lesions. The diagnosis of these infections is generally made by examination of a skin biopsy. Management of these fungal infections is difficult due to the immunocompromised state of the patients. Moreover, antifungal therapy and immunosuppressive drug interactions should be considered during treatment management. Herein, we reported a case of celluliti

Successful treatment of bilateral Paecilomyces pyelonephritis in a German shepherd dog.

A six-year-old female entire German shepherd dog was investigated for polyuria, polydipsia and lethargy. Investigations revealed a mild azotaemia and abdominal ultrasound revealed marked bilateral dilation of the renal pelves with echogenic material and proximal left hydroureter. Urine cytological examination and aspirates from the right renal pelvis revealed mats of fungal hyphae consistent with fungal bezoar formation. Fungal cultures revealed a profuse growth of Paecilomyces variotii. Initial treatment with oral itraconazole was unsuccessful, leading to bilateral nephrotomies to remove the

The use of voriconazole in the management of post-penetrating keratoplasty Paecilomyces keratitis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report successful treatment of Paecilomyces lilacinus keratitis with voriconazole. METHOD: Case series. RESULTS: Two patients with history of penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) presented with progressive P. lilacinus keratitis. Initial medical treatment failed to control the infection. The first patient received topical voriconazole at the early stage of infection. The second patient required therapeutic PKP and intracameral voriconazole was given at the end of the surgery. He developed presumed secondary endophthalmitis and was treated aggressively with int

Paecilomyces sinusitis in an immunocompromised adult patient: case report and review.

A case of fungal sinusitis caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus that was unresponsive to amphotericin B and involved a patient with acute myeloid leukemia is described. Histologic examination of sinus tissue and periorbital bone demonstrated invasion by a fungus with septate hyphae, which was identified in culture as P. lilacinus. The isolate was resistant to amphotericin B but susceptible to itraconazole. The patient responded clinically when itraconazole was added to the treatment regimen. Invasive aspergilar infections are frequently diagnosed by histology. Other fungi such as Fusarium, Pseudal

Thiol-dependent serine proteinase from Paecilomyces lilacinus: purification and catalytic properties.

An extracellular thiol-dependent serine proteinase was isolated from culture medium filtrate of the microscopic fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus with a yield of 33%. The enzyme is inactivated by specific inhibitors of serine proteinases, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, as well as by chloromercuribenzoate and mercury acetate, but is resistant to chelating agents. The proteinase has broad specificity, hydrolyzes proteins and p-nitroanilides of N-acylated tripeptides, exhibiting maximal activity in hydrolysis of substrates containing long hydrophobic and aromatic residues (norleucine, leucine, phenyl

Functional characterization of biodegradable films obtained from whole Paecilomyces variotii biomass.

The indiscriminate use of petroleum-based polymers and plastics for single-use food packaging has led to serious environmental problems due the non-biodegradable characteristics. Thus, much attention has been focused on the research of new biobased and biodegradable materials. Yeast and fungal biomass are low-cost and abundant sources of biopolymers with highly promising properties for the development of biodegradable materials. This study aimed to select a preparation method to develop new biodegradable films using the whole biomass of Paecilomyces variotii subjected to successive physical tr

Paecilomyces/Purpureocillium keratitis: A consecutive study with a case series and literature review.

Paecilomyces/Purpureocillium species is an emerging pathogen of fungal keratitis; the risk factor, clinical course, and outcome of Paecilomyces/Purpureocillium keratitis need more exploration. We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with culture-proven Paecilomyces/Purpureocillium keratitis in our hospital from 2003 to 2017 and combined them with 50 previous cases reported after the review conducted by Yuan et al. in 2009. Clinical features between the previously and newly reported cases were compared using the publication by Yuan et al. as a cutoff point. The mean age of the 62 newly reported

[HYPEREOSINOPHILIC SYNDROME ASSOCIATED WITH SEPSIS DUE TO PAECILOMYCES FUNGI DISSEMINATED INTO THE LIVER].

A 49 year old woman with signs of chronic sepsis, hepatomegaly, and high eosinophil count was under long-term examination including consultations with an oncologist, parasitologist, and hematologist, diagnostic laparotomy, and studies of liver biopsies. Seeding blood samples onto Saburo's medium resulted in the growth of Paecilomyces variotii Bainier colonies. Counting mature spherules of the fungus revealed 59000 spherules per 1 mcl compared with the normal value of 1000-6000 which suggested paecilomycotic etiology of sepsis. The histological study of liver biopsies demonstrated hemorrhagic f

Fungal keratitis caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus associated with a retained intracorneal hair.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of fungal keratitis caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus (P. lilacinus) associated with a retained intracorneal hair. METHODS: A 61-year-old man developed pain, decreased vision, hyperemia, and corneal infiltrates in his right eye without any predisposing factor. An intracorneal hair had migrated superiorly in the corneal stroma, giving rise to 3 separate stromal infiltrates. The patient demonstrated a waxing and waning course over several months despite antimicrobial and steroid therapy. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination of a corneal biopsy specimen disclosed the

Combined surgical and antifungal treatment of a subcutaneous infection due to Paecilomyces lilacinus.

Paecilomyces lilacinus was the causal agent of a case of subcutaneous infection in a patient with liver cirrhosis. Surgical treatment in combination with systemic amphotericin B therapy led to complete recovery. Retrospectively performed microdilution testing revealed dose dependent in vitro susceptibility of the isolate to voriconazole (MIC = 2 g/ml) and terbinafine (MIC = 1 microg/ml).

Hirano body in an inflammatory cell of leptomeningeal vessel infected by fungus Paecilomyces.

An intracytoplasmic microfilamentous lattice, ultrastructurally identical to Hirano body, was found in an inflammatory cell within a leptomeningeal vessel wall infected by fungus Paecilomyces javanicus. The structure was well preserved and not associated with phagosomes. This is the first report of Hirano body found in an inflammatory cell at the site of fungal infection. The present finding suggests that the formation of Hirano body is non-specific and not restricted to the cell of the neuro-muscular system.

[Calcitriol induced hypercalcemia in a hunting dog with a disseminated Paecilomyces variotii infection].

A 5-year old hunting dog was presented with reduced appetite, weight loss and polyuria/polydipsia. Hematology and clinical chemistry revealed anemia, leukocytosis, increased liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia and hypercalcemia. The cytological, pathohistological and microbiological examination identified a disseminated infection with the saprophytic mould fungus Paecilomyces variotii in the biopsies of the spleen and a lymph node. Determination of vitamin D metabolites confirmed a calcitriol induced hypercalcemia.

Treatment of Paecilomyces variotii pneumonia with posaconazole: case report and literature review.

The fungi Paecilomyces variotii is a potential pathogen in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Their rare association with clinical disease results in scarce literature regarding susceptibility and treatment. Here, we discuss a case involving successful treatment of probable P. variotii pneumonia with posaconazole after treatment failure with voriconazole. The current literature related to antifungal susceptibility profiles, microbiological identification methods and clinical management of infections caused by this organism is also reviewed.

Paecilomyces lilacinus olecranon bursitis in an immunocompromised host: case report and review.

Paecilomyces lilacinus is a little-known mold that causes rare cases of invasive infections in humans regardless of their immune status. We present a unique case in an immunocompromised host with olecranon bursitis because of multidrug-resistant P. lilacinus treated with systemic ketoconazole therapy and surgical debridement. Recognition of this fungus is difficult initially because of its appearance, which can be confused with that of other fungi. Once this organism has been identified, it is recommended that antifungal susceptibility testing be obtained to guide appropriate therapy. Combinat

Paecilomyces lilacinus endophthalmitis with secondary keratitis: a case report and literature review.

A case of endogenous fungous endophthalmitis with secondary pupillary block glaucoma and corneal invasion requiring penetrating keratoplasty is reported. Initially Paecilomyces lilacinus was isolated from a vitreous and a lens aspirate, but a second vitreous tap revealed Aspergillus fumigatus and P lilacinus. This case highlights the difficulty of diagnosing endogenous fungous endophthalmitis presenting without risk factors and the difficulties of managing such cases using the antifungous agents available. To our knowledge, this is the first case report documenting a progression to stromal ker
