New discoveries of sylvatic Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) throughout the Bolivian Chaco.

Sylvatic populations of Triatoma infestans might be involved in the recolonization of human dwellings. We report here the discoveries of new T. infestans sylvatic foci in the Bolivian Chaco. Eighty-one triatomines were caught, 38 of which were identified as T. infestans. Triatoma sordida and Panstrongylus geniculatus were the other species collected. One T. infestans and one T. sordida were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi TcI; one T. infestans was infected with TcII. These discoveries add to the debate on the geographic distribution of sylvatic T. infestans populations, the geographic origin o

Competitive displacement in Triatominae: the Triatoma infestans success.

Brazil has just been certificated by Pan American Health Organization as 'free of Chagas disease transmission due to Triatoma infestans'. During the early 1980s, this species of blood-sucking bug alone was considered responsible for approximately 80% of Chagas disease transmission. But it was not always so. The species originally abundant in houses of central and eastern Brazil was Panstrongylus megistus, which seems to have been progressively displaced from houses by T. infestans during the past century. Indeed, T. infestans seems able to displace other Triatominae in artificial environments.

Morphology of the terminal abdominal segments in females of Triatominae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Triatominae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Reduviidae) includes 151 extant species that are all potential vectors of Chagas disease. The relationships among these species have been recently studied based on molecular and cytogenetical approaches, and although the morphology of these insects is fairly described, wide comparative studies and cladistics analysis based on this feature are lacking. A comparative study of the terminal abdominal segments in females of 26 species of Triatominae was performed in order to evaluate their importance for the distinction of genera and species, and obtain characters t

Studies on vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi in Trinidad, West Indies.

Studies on vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas were conducted during 1982-85 as part of an investigation on the epidemiological status of American Trypanosomiasis in Trinidad, West Indies. A total of 148 reduviid bugs were collected from caves, armadillo nests and at light traps, comprising four sylvatic species and totalling 120 Panstrongylus geniculatus (Latreille), two P. rufotuberculatus (Champion), twelve Rhodnius pictipes Stal and fourteen Eratyrus mucronatus Stal. A significantly higher level of infection with T. cruzi was recorded for P. geniculatus (42.5%) compared to R. pictipes (8.3

[General situation and perspectives of chagas disease in Northeastern Region, Brazil].

Primary and secondary data show the importance and distribution of human Chagas disease (HCD) in Northeast Brazil. Among the 27 detected vector species, Triatoma infestans, Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma brasiliensis and Triatoma pseudomaculata are epidemiologically important. Major medical impact is attributed to T. infestans and P. megistus, the most domiciliated and vulnerable species, while the other two are native and more difficult to control. Regional differences in transmission and medical impact of HCD exist in the Northeast, where in general the disease appears to be less harmful t

Chagas disease in Trinidad and Tobago - a call to action.

Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a vector-borne disease that can lead to serious cardiac alterations. The Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago (TT) is not considered Chagas endemic by major public health organizations, but Trinidad is home to six T. cruzi vector species as well as T. cruzi-infected vertebrate hosts, including humans. Here we present the most comprehensive assessment to date of Chagas disease in TT based on information from published literature, museum specimens, hospital and veterinary records and archival documents. Panstrongylus genic

Spatial prediction of risk areas for vector transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil.

After obtaining certification of the absence of transmission of the Trypanosoma cruzi by Triatoma infestans in 2006, other native species of protozoan vectors have been found in human dwellings within municipalities of the State of Paraná, Southern Brazil. However, the spatial distribution of T. cruzi vectors and how climatic and landscape combined variables explain the distribution are still poorly understood. The goal of this study was to predict the potential distribution of T. cruzi vectors as a proxy for Chagas disease transmission risk using Ecological Niche Models (ENMs) based on climat

Structure and function of the stylets of hematophagous Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), with special reference to Dipetalogaster maxima.

Kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are able to bend their rod-like maxillae while searching for blood vessels in the tissue of their vertebrate hosts. Little is known about the working mechanisms of these bending movements and the distal opening of the food channel. We compared the morphological structure of the stylets (mandibles and maxillae) of four triatomine species and analyzed the feeding process of Dipetalogaster maxima (Uhler, 1894). The maxillae of triatomine bugs are interlocked by a tongue-and-groove system, allowing longitudinal sliding. While penetrating the host t

Machine-learning model led design to experimentally test species thermal limits: The case of kissing bugs (Triatominae).

Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) determines habitat suitability of a species across geographic areas using macro-climatic variables; however, micro-habitats can buffer or exacerbate the influence of macro-climatic variables, requiring links between physiology and species persistence. Experimental approaches linking species physiology to micro-climate are complex, time consuming and expensive. E.g., what combination of exposure time and temperature is important for a species thermal tolerance is difficult to judge a priori. We tackled this problem using an active learning approach that util

DataTri, a database of American triatomine species occurrence.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is transmitted to mammals - including humans - by insect vectors of the subfamily Triatominae. We present the results of a compilation of triatomine occurrence and complementary ecological data that represents the most complete, integrated and updated database (DataTri) available on triatomine species at a continental scale. This database was assembled by collecting the records of triatomine species published from 1904 to 2017, spanning all American countries with triatomine presence. A total of 21815 georeferenced records were obtained

Studies in search of a suitable experimental insect model for xenodiagnosis of hosts with Chagas' disease. 4--The reflection of parasite stock in the responsiveness of different vector species to chronic infection with different Trypanosoma cruzi stocks.

Previous studies (1982, 1987) have emphasized the superiority of sylvatic vector species over domestic species as xenodiagnostic agents in testing hosts with acute or chronic infections by T. cruzi "Y" stock. The present study, which is unique in that it contains data on both infectivity rates produced by the same stock in 11 different vector species and also the reaction of the same vector species to seven different parasite stocks, establishes the general validity of linking efficiency of xenodiagnosis to the biotope of its agent. For example, infectivity rates produced by "São Felipe" stock

Spatial modeling and risk assessment of chagas disease vector distribution in Espírito Santo, Brazil: A comprehensive approach for targeted control.

Chagas disease, a persistent and life-threatening infection caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health concern in Latin America. Despite the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo (ES) not being classified as a high-risk area, the presence of epidemiologically significant triatomines like Panstrongylus megistus suggests a latent risk of T. cruzi transmission. This study, employing spatial modeling, assesses the distribution of key triatomine species in ES and predicts areas at risk for Chagas disease transmission. Our models, constructed with Maxent, KUENM, and Q

Trypanosoma cruzi: Biological characterization of lineages I and II supports the predominance of lineage I in Colombia.

The causes of the particular distribution of both Trypanosoma cruzi lineages throughout the American continent remain unknown. In Colombia, T. cruzi I is the predominant group in both domestic and sylvatic cycles. Here, we present the biological characterization of T. cruzi parasites belonging to both T. cruzi I and T. cruzi IIb groups. Our results show the inability of the T. cruzi IIb clones to infect mammalian cells, produce trypomastigotes and replicate in Rhodnius prolixus, the main vector species in this country. Moreover, this result was confirmed when other species from the same genus,

Distribution and natural infection status of synantrophic triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, reveals new epidemiological scenarios for chagas disease in the Highlands of Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Updating the distribution and natural infection status of triatomine bugs is critical for planning, prioritizing, and implementing strategies to control Chagas disease (CD), especially after vector reduction programs. After carrying out a control program, the Department of Boyaca contains the highest number of Colombian municipalities certified by PAHO to be free of intradomiciliary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi by Rhodnius prolixus. The present work describes the spatial distribution, natural infection (NI), and molecular characterization of T. cruzi in synanthropic triatomi

Detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from Canoinhas, Santa Catarina State, Brazil1.

Opossums are synanthropic animals that participate in the zoonotic transmission cycles. Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects many domestic and wild animals and humans worldwide. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of T. cruzi in free-ranging opossums in Canoinhas, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Fifty opossums (Didelphis albiventris) (33 captured and 17 road-killed) were evaluated using Nested-PCR assay. All tissue samples were negative (0/17). Eight of the 33 (24.24%; 95% CI:11.94-40,89%) blood samples were positive for T. cruzi. No significant as
