INTRODUCTION: We observed two cases of Pasteurella and discuss the role of bacterial sampling in ulcerations of the lower limb.
CASE REPORTS: In the first case, Pasteurella was discovered in an ulceration of the lower limb and was cured with no particularly specific care. In the second case, Pasteurella had been inoculated by scratching an ulceration and could not be cured without specific treatment.
DISCUSSION: No specific pathological consequence in chronic carriers could be possible, a situation which has often been reported in the literature. Pasteurella is an unusual specific cause of u

Most Pasteurella multocida infections in humans have been associated with animal bites or scratches. While a variety of infections involving P multocida, unassociated with animal trauma, have been described, infections of the urinary tract are rare. We studied a case in which P multocida was isolated from the urine of a woman with advanced uterine cervical cancer. In most of the cases in which P multocida has been isolated from urine, the patients have had anatomic defects of the urinary tract, as well as an underlying chronic illness. These host-related characteristics appear to be important

Five instances of infection by Pasteurella septica, an organism which closely resembles H. influenzae on methods of presumptive bacteriology, are reported from an acute treatment general hospital practice over a period of three months. This infection decidedly outnumbers those caused by other Pasteurella species in North America. The organism is apt to be identified as H. influenzae, Friedlander's bacillus or Mima polymorpha. Unlike these, it shows extreme sensitivity to penicillin, sometimes combined with resistance to antibiotics that inhibit or kill these other organisms. While in the past P

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus that is commonly transmitted through animal bites including cats and dogs. The degree of infection can be worrisome in the immunosuppressed population with a stark correlation in patients with cirrhosis. However, taking that population into account, only 13 cases of P. multocida bacteraemia have been recorded with the majority of those cases having cirrhotic liver disease along with multiple comorbidities. Here, we present an elderly patient with only pertinent medical history of mixed hyperlipidaemia who presents after a mechanical fall w

Pasteurella multocida is classically responsible for local soft tissue infections secondary to dog bites or cat scratches. It can be responsible for meningitis in infants and elderly persons. We report the case history of a 5-year-old male child admitted to our pediatric unit for meningitis. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an infection with P. multocida. The suspected mode of contamination was either from the saliva of a pet dog or through an unnoticed skull fracture sustained after an accident 1 year prior to the occurrence of meningitis. In spite of the neurologic complication (cerebra

Pasteurella multocida is a pathogenic Gram-negative bacterium that has been classified into three subspecies, five capsular serogroups and 16 serotypes. P. multocida serogroup A isolates are bovine nasopharyngeal commensals, bovine pathogens and common isolates from bovine respiratory disease (BRD), both enzootic calf pneumonia of young dairy calves and shipping fever of weaned, stressed beef cattle. P. multocida A:3 is the most common serotype isolated from BRD, and these isolates have limited heterogeneity based on outer membrane protein (OMP) profiles and ribotyping. Development of P. multo

BACKGROUND: Tuboovarian abscess is commonly associated with sexually transmitted pathogens. We report a tuboovarian abscess caused by a rare pathogen, Pasteurella multocida, which was managed conservatively.
CASE: A 50-year-old sexually inactive woman presented with suprapubic pain and fever. Cat scratches were seen on her hand. Ultrasonography showed a 7.9-cm complex cystic adnexal structure. Her fever persisted despite broad-spectrum parenteral antibiotics. After placement of a transvaginal drain, the patient defervesced, and her pain improved. Both blood cultures and cyst aspirates grew Pa

Numerous diseases can lead to multilocular lesions of the liver. The authors report a rare pediatric case of hepatic granulomas due to Pasteurella multocida: a 7-year-old girl with chronic fever was investigated by sonography and CT scan, demonstrating mesenteric lymph node enlargement and numerous small hepatic lesions. After surgical biopsy, histopathology of the liver specimens showed pyogenic granuloma, with serologic testing positive for Pasteurella multocida. Treatment with a tetracycline and corticosteroids was successful. Pasteurella multocida infection, despite its habitual benign cou

Two mutants of Pasteurella haemolytica A1 that do not produce leukotoxin were isolated. Following mutagenesis, colonies were screened with antiserum by a filter assay for absence of the secreted leukotoxin. The two mutants both appeared to produce normal amounts of other antigens, as judged by reactivity with polyclonal serum from an animal with pasteurellosis, and were not altered in beta-hemolytic activity as seen on blood agar plates. There was no evidence of either cell-associated or secreted leukotoxin protein when Western blots (immunoblots) were carried out with the polyclonal serum or

A 21 year old primigravida with a twin pregnancy developed Pasteurella multocida chorioamnionitis. Infection occurred at 27 weeks gestational age after prolonged rupture of membranes. The twin in the separate sac presenting proximal to the cervix suffered infection and died shortly after birth whereas the other twin was not infected. The bacterium is believed to have caused ascending infection from asymptomatic colonization of the vaginal tract.

A 44-year-old woman with Graves' disease and exophthalmos developed a severe corneal ulcer caused by Pasteurella multocida after being bumped on her right eye by her pet dog. The organism was transferred from the patient to an abraded rabbit cornea and produced a similiar corneal ulcer and hypopyon.

Three cases of infection with Pasteurella multocida included acute epiglottitis, septic arthritis, and pleuropulmonary infection. Human infections with this microorganism are commonly related either to animal contact (eg, wound infections) or to the presence of underlying chronic respiratory tract disease. Although septic arthritis and pleuropulmonary infections have previously been attributed to this pathogen, to our knowledge, this is the first reported case of acute epiglottitis caused by P. multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is an important veterinary and opportunistic human pathogen. The species is diverse and complex with respect to antigenic variation, host predeliction and pathogenesis. Certain serological types are the aetiologic agents of severe pasteurellosis, such as fowl cholera in domestic and wild birds, bovine haemorrhagic septicaemia and porcine atrophic rhinitis. The recent application of molecular methods such as the polymerase chain reaction, restriction endonuclease analysis, ribotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, gene cloning, characterisation and recombinant protein

Infections caused by Pasteurella occur most frequently after domestic animal bites or scratches and in individuals with agricultural or veterinary contact with animals. A serious Pasteurella infection developed in an agricultural worker following tumor extirpation of a head and neck neoplasm. Review of Pasteurella infections in humans disclosed that 31 of 446 reported infections involved head and neck structures. The most serious of these involved the adjacent central nervous system. Surgical drainage combined with parenteral penicillin remains the treatment of choice in these infections. Amin

A vaccine against pneumonic pasteurellosis was evaluated for efficacy at two dilutions in lambs transported by sea from New Zealand to Saudi Arabia. The experimental vaccine was a killed Pasteurella haemolytica serotype A1 and A2 preparation. There was no evidence of either dilution of the vaccine leading to a lower pneumonia death or lesion rate than for the control group. However, bacteriological examinations to establish the causality of the pneumonia cases showed Pasteurella multocida to be the dominant organism, while P. haemolytica types A1 and/or A2 occurred at only a very low incidence

Eleven cases of systemic Pasteurella haemolytica infection in cattle were identified from routine diagnostic laboratory submissions during the falls of 1988, 1989, and 1991. All cases came with a history of recent vaccination with an avirulent live culture P. haemolytica product. Nine of 11 cases involved cattle vaccinated between 2 and 18 days previously with this product. Ten of 11 cases involved 182-227-kg beef calves that were vaccinated between September and November during routine processing for entry into feedlots. The morbidity and mortality was generally low. The major pathologic find

Pasteurella multocida is highly prevalent in animal populations. It is usually a component of the normal microbiome of the oral, nasopharyngeal and upper respiratory tracts of animals and can cause varying degrees of infection and even death in animals. P. multocida poses a threat to public health safety because humans can be infected by being bitten by infected animals or coming into contact with their nasal secretions. This article summarises the morphological and culture characteristics of P. multocida, in addition to serotyping, virulence factors and pathogenesis, aiming to explore the mec

Pasteurella multocida is a rare cause of infection in the pediatric age group that can lead to severe systemic disease and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This bacterium is found in the normal nasopharyngeal flora of domestic animals. Transmission can occur through direct traumatic contact or indirectly via animal saliva. We present the case of a 30-day-old male infant who attended a neonatology follow-up visit with no parental concerns. On physical examination, the infant showed intermittent periods of whining, ill appearance, reduced vitality, and poor peripheral perf
