The objective of the present study was to analyze the clinical and radiological results of periacetabular osteotomies (PAO) using Kirschner wire fixation and an allogeneic cancellous bone graft. This retrospective cohort study included 73 patients (85 PAOs). The allografts were processed from distal femur of cadaveric donors, defatted, sterilized with a peracetic-acid ethanol solution and freeze-dried. The clinical outcome, as measured by the Harris Hip Scores (HHS), the complication rate and the acetabular correction, as measured by radiological parameters, were compared. The postoperative fe

Pollution of wastewater and natural waters by organic contaminants is a major health issue, yet actual remediation methods are limited by incomplete removal of recalcitrant contaminants and by secondary pollution by chlorinated contaminants and catalytic metals. To attempt to solve these issues, we tested the removal of acid orange by peracetic acid (PAA), a safe oxidant, activated by Fe-biochar that iron anchored on biochar to prevent secondary pollution by iron. Fe-biochar was synthesized using a simple, one-step pyrolysis method. We investigated the effects of PAA concentration, pH, humic a

Peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as promising strategies for antibiotic removal. However, the efficiency of PAA-based AOPs remains constrained due to rapid charge carrier recombination and the overlooked contribution of photothermal effects to PAA activation. Herein, MnO2/Cu2O S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed through a hydrothermal-precipitation method, enabling the synergistic use of photothermal and photocatalytic effects for enhanced PAA activation. Notably, the MOCO-0.6/PAA/Vis system achieved 96.17% MTZ removal within 30 min, exhibiting

This study investigated the reaction mechanisms of peracetic acid (PAA) with dihydroxybenzenes (HBs) to generate reactive species for degradation of micropollutants containing aniline(-like) structures, including 7 sulfonamide antibiotics, 17 (non-)substituted anilines, and 3 nucleobases. Three of the studied HBs significantly enhanced aniline degradation kinetics by PAA, with degrees following the order of catechol (CA) > protocatechuic acid > hydroquinone. The PAA/CA process at the optimal condition (initial pH 7, 100-μM PAA, 50-μM CA) achieved 90% removal efficiency of sulfadiazine in 40 mi

The practical application of the Fe-catalyzed peracetic acid (PAA) processes is seriously restricted due to the need for narrow pH working range and poor anti-interference capacity. This study demonstrates that protocatechuic acid (PCA), a natural and eco-environmental phenolic acid, significantly enhanced the removal of sulfonamide antibiotics in Fe(III)/PAA process under actually neutral pH conditions (6.0-8.0) by complexing Fe(III). With sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the model contaminant, the pseudo-first-order rate constant of SMX elimination in PCA/Fe(III)/PAA process was 63.5 times higher t

Krypton chloride (KrCl*) excimer lamps (222 nm) are used as a promising irradiation source to drive ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) in water treatment. In this study, the UV222/peracetic acid (PAA) process is implemented as a novel UV-AOPs for the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water. The results demonstrate that UV222/PAA process exhibits excellent degradation performance for carbamazepine (CBZ), with a removal rate of 90.8 % within 45 min. Notably, the degradation of CBZ in the UV222/PAA process (90.8 %) was significantly higher than that in the UV254/

Past antimicrobial misuse has led to the spread of antimicrobial resistance amongst pathogens, reportedly a major public health threat. Attempts to reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria are in place worldwide, among which finding alternatives to antimicrobials have a pivotal role. Such molecules could be used as "green alternatives" to reduce the bacterial load either by targeting specific bacterial groups or more generically, functioning as biocides when delivered in vivo. In this study, the effect of in-water peracetic acid as a broad-spectrum antibiotic alternative for

Aseptic processing and terminal sterilization become increasingly challenging as medical devices become more complex and include active biologics. Terminal sterilization is preferred for patient safety and production costs. We aimed to determine how sterilization using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) with low levels of peracetic acid (PAA) affects amino acids and human epidermal growth factor (EGF) as a model protein. In a benchtop reactivity test, the amino acids methionine, tryptophan, arginine and lysine reacted with low levels of PAA in solution. At PAA levels used for scCO2 sterilization, howev

Patellar tendon allografts, retrieved from cadaveric human donors, are widely used for replacement of damaged cruciate ligaments. In common with other tissue allografts originating from cadaveric donors, there are concerns regarding the potential for disease transmission from the donor to the recipient. Additionally, retrieval and subsequent processing protocols expose the graft to the risk of environmental contamination. For these reasons, disinfection or sterilisation protocols are necessary for these grafts before they are used clinically. A high-level disinfection protocol, utilising perac

Having been successfully bred in semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture systems, oval squids of the Sepioteuthis lessoniana species complex are emerging as promising candidates for research and industry. Nevertheless, information about pathogens and diseases that may affect squid aquaculture remains sparse. In this study, we identify new parasitic copepod species that causes squid mortality and decreases squid hatching rates, and we also offer a solution to eliminate the pathogen during incubation of squid eggs. The newly discovered copepod Ikanecator primus gen. et sp. nov. was identified o

Peracetic acid (PAA) as an emerging oxidative has been concerned increasingly due to its high oxidation capacity and low byproducts formation potential. This study was to investigate the oxidation of sulfamethazine (SMZ) by PAA activated with activated biochar (ABC) after thermal modification. The results demonstrated that PAA could be effectively activated by ABC to degrade SMZ in a wide pH range (3-9), which followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.99). Both non-radicals (singlet oxygen) and free radicals (alkoxy radicals, hydroxyl radicals) existed in the ABC/PAA system, and the de

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a prominent cause of healthcare-associated infections. Carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) is considered a serious public health threat and has been increasingly linked to endoscopy-associated outbreaks. Biofilm formation in endoscope channels contributes to increased antimicrobial tolerance, potentially compromising disinfectant efficacy during reprocessing. This study evaluated the efficacy of peracetic acid (PAA), a commonly used disinfectant in endoscope reprocessing, on K. pneumoniae in planktonic and biofilm form.
METHODS: Disinfectant efficacy

Increasing concerns have been raised on endocrine disrupting chemicals like the sex hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), the more since traditional wastewater (WW) treatments appear to be ineffective for their removal. The efficacy of the relatively novel disinfectant peracetic acid (PAA) in EE2 removal was evaluated, as well as its potential effects on WW quality parameters. The treatments tested for EE2 removal were also evaluated in terms of toxicity, through the determination of biochemical responses (antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation and vitellogenin induction) using zebrafish (Danio

Peracetic acid (PAA) has strong biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi, and spores, even with short contact times. PAA-mediated sterilization is therefore an attractive method for sterilization of growth media that have heat-labile components or when polymer-based equipment is used. However, residual PAA and co-existing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can inhibit the growth of cultivated species, necessitating a fast and reliable quenching strategy that does not require rinsing. In contrast to Fe-EDTA-based catalytic decomposition that is strongly influenced by pH, buffers, and organic nitrogen, w

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is one of the most important foodborne viruses and poses a significant risk in frozen foods along the cold chain. Traditional disinfectants exhibit reduced efficacy in frozen matrices and often fail to meet the requirements for food applications. This study optimized and evaluated a novel antifreeze-peracetic acid formulation (Af-PAA) for application on frozen foods, achieving disinfection performance at -40 °C. The formulation was optimized using four indicator microorganisms, with effective Af-PAA concentrations of 200 mg/L for Escherichia coli, 200 mg/L for Staphyloc
