Dentists should be on the alert when treating periodontal diseases in risk-group subjects. A manifest gingival inflammation along with other signs of iron-deficiency state, coupled with no effect of stomatological treatment, give grounds to recommend these patients to consult a hematologist.

The purpose of this study was to examine the variability in bacterial proportions between individual periodontal sites in patients with chronic periodontitis by means of differential dark-field microscopy. Fourteen patients with untreated, moderate to advanced disease were included. Probing depth, plaque and gingival index scores were recorded for each patient. Microbial samples were collected from the tooth surface with the greatest proving depth in each sextant and examined individually by dark-field microscopy. The results indicated that proportions of spirochetes and motile rods at any giv

Obesity and periodontal diseases are highly prevalent chronic conditions linked by shared inflammatory and metabolic pathways. Obesity-induced systemic inflammation, adipokines imbalance and oxidative stress can exacerbate periodontal breakdown, while epidemiological evidence demonstrates a consistent association between excess adiposity and increased periodontitis risk. Understanding these mechanisms supports integrated management strategies combining periodontal therapy with lifestyle and metabolic interventions. This review summarises current biological, epidemiological and clinical evidenc…

Gingivitis and periodontitis are immunoinflammatory periodontal diseases characterized by chronic localized infections usually associated with insidious inflammation This narrative review discusses periodontal diseases and mechanisms influencing the immune response and autoimmunity in pediatric rheumatic diseases (PRD), particularly juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (C-SLE) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Gingivitis was more frequently observed in these diseases compared to health controls, whereas periodontitis was a rare finding. In JIA pat…

Children and adolescents are subject to several periodontal diseases. Although there is a much lower prevalence of destructive periodontal diseases in children than in adults, children can develop severe forms of periodontitis. In some cases, this destructive disease is a manifestation of a known underlying systemic disease. In other young patients, the underlying cause for increased susceptibility and early onset of disease is unknown. These diseases are often familial, suggesting a genetic predisposition for aggressive disease. Current modalities for managing periodontal diseases of children…

UNLABELLED: THE PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Periodontal diseases are inflammatory conditions that were once thought to have manifestations localized to the oral cavity alone, and were therefore considered the concern of only dentists and other oral health professionals. Emerging evidence has changed this view and now suggests that periodontal diseases may play a role in numerous conditions that impact systemic well-being, including diabetes mellitus. This review examines the relationships that exist between periodontal diseases and diabetes mellitus, with a focus on potential common pathophysiologic pa…

Periodontal diseases are initiated by Gram-negative tooth-associated microbial biofilms that elicit a host response, with resultant osseous and soft tissue destruction. In response to endotoxins derived from periodontal pathogens, several osteoclast-related mediators target the destruction of alveolar bone and supporting connective tissues. Major drivers of this aggressive tissue destruction are matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), cathepsins, and other osteoclast-derived enzymes. This article focuses on the downstream factors of the osteoclast responsible for the degradation of bone and soft tis…

Periodontal diseases may be the first clinical sign of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infection. Since the immunosuppression and subsequent susceptibility may alter the responses of the oral tissues as well as the microflora, both periodontal treatment and result of therapy may be modified. The periodontal diseases in HIV-seropositive patients include common as well as less conventional forms of gingivitis and periodontitis, and bacterial, mycotic and viral infections are seen. Neoplasias may also involve the periodontium; most common are Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recent…

Recent data concerning the bacteriology of periodontal diseases justify the use of antibacterial drugs. In advanced or resistant forms of the disease, the standard treatments are in fact insufficient. The antibacterial agents advocated include systemic antibiotics and local antiseptics. These products may be used separately or in combination. But, this antibacterial treatment remains a complementary option and cannot replace conventional treatments.

In its most common form, periodontitis is viewed as a chronic immunoinflammatory disorder of the tooth supporting tissues, shaped by host-microbiome disequilibrium, exaggerated immune activation, and impaired resolution mechanisms. This review explores the periodontal battlefield through its inflammatory and immunological lens, beginning with the transformation of the lesion from silent immune surveillance to sustained inflammation, connective tissue degradation, and alveolar bone loss. The classical Page and Schroeder model is used as a foundation but reinterpreted in light of current evidenc

Periodontal disease, a significant worldwide health burden, is characterized by chronic inflammation and destruction of periodontal tissues, including the cementum, periodontal ligament (PDL), alveolar bone, and gingival tissue. Recent research has linked the development and progression of periodontal disease to oxidative stress. This study provides comprehensive explanations of the mechanisms behind oxidative stress in periodontal disease, with a focus on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their effects on periodontal tissues. Oxidative stress triggers a number of detrimental

OBJECTIVE: To describe illness perception among patients with periodontal diseases in relation to socio-demographic predictors, oral signs and symptoms.
BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional analytical study.
PARTICIPANTS: Stratified quota sample of 353 consecutive adults with periodontal diseases attending university dental clinics in Iran.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The illness perception of periodontal diseases measured using the Brief-Illness Perception Questionnaire.
RESULTS: Participants' mean age was 38.7 years and 53% were female. The most frequent symptoms were tooth sensitivity, inf…

Periodontal diseases include periodontitis and gingival overgrowth. Periodontitis is a bacterial infectious disease, and its pathological cascade is regulated by many inflammatory cytokines secreted by immune or tissue cells, such as interleukin-6. In contrast, gingival overgrowth develops as a side effect of specific drugs, such as immunosuppressants, anticonvulsants, and calcium channel blockers. Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) are the most abundant cells in gingival connective tissue, and human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFs) are located between the teeth and alveolar bone. HGFs …

UNLABELLED: Periodontal diseases are some of the major oral diseases and conditions in adults.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to present the population patterns of periodontal diseases and trends of periodontitis in the Australian adult population.
METHODS: Data collected in the recent National Study of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH) 2017-18 were used to present the current population patterns of periodontal diseases. Periodontal assessment was carried out at three sites per tooth for all present teeth, excluding third molars. Prevalence of gingivitis, periodontal pocket depth of 4+ mm, gingival rece…

It is of interest to document the known relationship between periodontal status and Angle's malocclusion types. We used 26092 case records of patients between 16 to 50 years of age with no gender restrictions. Variables such as age, gender, periodontal diagnosis and type of Angle's occlusion were extracted and tabulated. Statistical analysis was completed using chi square test in the SPSS software version 20. Data shows that the majority (95.27%) had Angle's class I occlusion and less than 5% had class II and Class III occlusion. Statistical analysis of class II and Class III cases with 1000 r
