The Autism Spectrum Quotient: Children's Version (AQ-Child).

The Autism Spectrum Quotient-Children's Version (AQ-Child) is a parent-report questionnaire that aims to quantify autistic traits in children 4-11 years old. The range of scores on the AQ-Child is 0-150. It was administered to children with an autism spectrum condition (ASC) (n = 540) and a general population sample (n = 1,225). Results showed a significant difference in scores between those with an ASC diagnosis and the general population. Receiver-operating-characteristic analyses showed that using a cut-off score of 76, the AQ-Child has high sensitivity (95%) and specificity (95%). The AQ-C

[Changes in the internal object world in an obsessive-compulsive patient during 3 years ambulatory psychotherapy. A study with the Repertory Grid Technique].

The significance of the repertory-grid technique, which is based on Kelly's theory of personal constructs for the analysis of course and change of behavioral abnormalities, is assessed in a case report on the psychotherapy of an obsessive compulsive patient. The method delineates judgements regarding herself, significant other persons, and disease conceptualizations. This idiographic method, situated between empirical and hermeneutic techniques, is particularly valuable for the detection of psychotherapeutic changes. Traditional procedures that aim at invariance of values can be lacking in sen

An intensive case analysis of client metacognition in a good-outcome psychotherapy: Lisa's case.

The authors analyzed the successful case of Lisa, a client with major depression, using the Metacognitive Assessment Scale (MAS). Consistently with the literature on depression, the authors hypothesize that Lisa's ability to reflect on mental states--here metacognition--is marginally affected. The authors found that Lisa was better at describing her own mind rather than understanding the mind of the others. Furthermore, the most severe impairment was in using metacognition to cope with mental state source of distress and to enact strategies to solve interpersonal problems. During the therapy s

Reconstructing Identity in the Shadow of Dementia: Narrative Identity Processes Among Adult Child Caregivers.

Caring for a parent with dementia constitutes a profound relational and existential transition for adult children, extending beyond functional caregiving demands to processes of identity negotiation and reconstruction. Although extensive research has documented caregiver burden, psychological distress, and health consequences in dementia caregiving, comparatively little attention has been devoted to the narrative mechanisms through which caregivers sustain a coherent sense of self. Drawing on narrative identity theory, ambiguous loss theory, and the concept of biographical disruption, this qua

Poststructuralist historicism and the psychological construction of anxiety disorders.

When applied to the construction of anxiety disorders, theories of poststructuralist historicism emphasize acts of interpretation that constitute and construct the disorders and problematize the processes by which meaning is constructed. An examination of the historical formulations of anxiety disorders, and in particular, agoraphobia, provides the opportunity for reanalyzing traditional approaches to the classifications of disorders. Psychological issues of paradox, attachment, and personal identity, which are crucial to current conceptualizations of agoraphobia, are acutely problematized wit

The 'Reading the Mind in Films' Task [child version]: complex emotion and mental state recognition in children with and without autism spectrum conditions.

Children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have difficulties recognizing others' emotions. Research has mostly focused on basic emotion recognition, devoid of context. This study reports the results of a new task, assessing recognition of complex emotions and mental states in social contexts. An ASC group (n = 23) was compared to a general population control group (n = 24). Children with ASC performed lower than controls on the task. Using task scores, more than 87% of the participants were allocated to their group. This new test quantifies complex emotion and mental state recognition in l

A preliminary investigation of a new pictorial method of measuring aggression-supportive cognition among young aggressive males.

A new pictorial assessment was developed to measure aggression-supportive cognitions among young aggressive male students. The assessment was comprised of 17 watercolor ambiguous sketches that could be interpreted in either an aggressive or a benign manner (e.g., two young people facing each other with their arms folded). The results showed that high trait aggressive male students were more likely to make hostile attributions of the pictures, providing significantly more themes of entitlement and power in the stories they generated about the pictures. Aggressive male students also endorsed sig

Psychoanalytic Theories Do Not Support a Unidimensional View of Personality Functioning.

Contemporary researchers tend to invoke psychoanalytic theories to support the view of personality functioning as a "unitary capacity" involving "psychological maturity." In this piece, I argue against this false equivalence by raising three points. First, I show that psychoanalysis is not a homogenous discipline that converged on a shared developmental ontology, but rather a deeply heterogenous tradition marked, if anything, by persistent disagreement. Second, I briefly review commonly-cited psychoanalytic theories (including classic Freudian, ego psychological, and object relational theories

Towards an Integrative Model of Physical Activity: bridging idiographic and nomothetic perspectives through participatory mapping.

Introduction: Existing behaviour change theories often frame physical activity (PA) engagement and sustainment as linear, stage-like processes and treat self-efficacy or intention as stable drivers across individuals and contexts. However, PA emerges from fluctuating internal and external conditions, requiring models that capture this complexity and guide intervention.Method: Guided by participatory systems science and Theory Construction Methodology, we developed the Integrative Model of PA as a prototheory through three stages. Participatory systems modelling interviews with 26 adults elicit

Mental Scene and Memory Construction and the Hippocampus.

A neurocomputational theory of scene and memory construction during memory recall, prospective thinking, and autobiographical memory is described. The theory describes the nature of the representation of scenes using spatial view cells in a continuous attractor network in the medial parahippocampal cortex, and how the location in the scene being represented can be shifted by self-motion eye position update even when the scene is not visible. The theory builds on the evidence for humans for a ventromedial visual cortical scene pathway via the prostriate cortex and ventromedial visual cortical r

Qualities of symbolic play among children with autism: a social-developmental perspective.

We hypothesized that the qualities of play shown by children with autism reflect their impoverished experience of identifying with other people's attitudes and moving among person-anchored perspectives. On this basis, we predicted their play should manifest a relative lack of the social-developmental hallmarks that typify creative symbolic functioning. We videotaped the spontaneous and modelled symbolic play of matched groups of children with and without autism. The two groups were similar in the mechanics of play, for example in making one thing stand for another and using materials flexibly.

A quantitative estimate of schema abnormality in socially anxious and non-anxious individuals.

Although cognitive theories of anxiety suggest that anxious individuals are characterized by abnormal threat-relevant schemas, few empirical studies have estimated the nature of these cognitive structures using quantitative methods that lend themselves to inferential statistical analysis. In the present study, socially anxious (n = 55) and non-anxious (n = 62) participants completed 3 Q-Sort tasks to assess their knowledge of events that commonly occur in social or evaluative scenarios. Participants either sorted events according to how commonly they personally believe the events occur (i.e. "

On the importance of being clear about the level of analysis of interest: An illustration using the case of self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: Theories about within-person (WP) variation are often tested using between-person (BP) research, despite the well-established fact that results may not generalize across levels of analysis. One possible explanation is vague theories that do not specify which level of analysis is of interest. We illustrate such a case using the construct of self-compassion. The factor structure at the BP level has been highly debated, although the theory is actually concerned with relationships at the WP level. METHOD: Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis was applied to experience-sampling data o

Criminal responsibility in Asperger's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Asperger's syndrome (AS) has been of much interest in the last two decades. Most people with AS are law abiding and are not involved in any violence. Over the years, however, there is increasing evidence of violent behavior and criminal acts committed by some people with AS. The characteristics of the link between AS and violation of the law requires identification and definition and the question regarding the criminal responsibility to be attributed to these offenders needs to be clarified. DATA: We present three cases that illustrate how the special characteristics of this syndr

Cognitive schemas and aggressive behavior in adolescents: the mediating role of social information processing.

This study assesses the association between cognitive schemas of justification of violence, grandiosity and abuse, and reactive and proactive aggressive behavior, and whether this association is mediated by social information processing (SIP). For this purpose, a sample of 1371 adolescents (638 girls and 580 boys) completed measures of cognitive schemas, SIP, and Reactive-Proactive Aggression. The results showed that the cognitive schemas of justification of violence and narcissism are more relevant for proactive aggression, whereas the abuse schema is more relevant for reactive aggression. Personality Functioning Cannot Only Be One Thing: A Call for Theoretical Pluralism.

Since its origins in recent diagnostic perspectives, the concept of personality functioning has been exclusively defined as a general factor of personality (pathology). Researchers have justified this definition by appealing to descriptive empirical findings (e.g., positive correlations among various personality disorder indicators) or traditional psychoanalytic theories (e.g., ego psychology). In this review, I argue that this monopoly of interpretive viewpoints is currently impeding progress in the field of personality functioning. To begin with, I review seminal psychoanalytic theories and

Thank you: A dedication to the life and work of Charles Gelso.

This article is a personal dedication to the life and work of Charles Gelso (Charlie), whose scholarship profoundly shaped contemporary understandings of the psychotherapy relationship. Rather than providing a conventional academic summary of his contributions, this reflection integrates personal narrative with theory to illuminate the lived meaning of his most enduring construct, the "real relationship." Charlie's work emphasized genuineness and realism within the therapeutic relationship, alongside transference and the working alliance, as central to psychotherapy process and change. Drawing

Sharing stories: life history narratives in stuttering research.

The life experiences of people who stutter (PWS) have not featured prominently in research. Historically, the profession of speech and language therapy has amassed data and developed its theory of stuttering within a positivistic frame. As a consequence, the existing over-arching theory of research and practice does not engage holistically with the dynamic personal, socio-cultural and political contexts of the individual who stutters. Therefore a conceptual shift is required in ontology, epistemology and methodology underpinning the knowledge construction process. The use of the life history n
