During the COVID-19 pandemic, shortages of filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), including N95 masks, highlighted the critical need for effective decontamination and reuse strategies. Current decontamination methods often rely on large, expensive equipment, hindering point-of-care application and timely reprocessing. This study presents the design and evaluation of a portable, low-cost system utilizing high-voltage pulsed electric fields (PEF) for FFR sterilization and electrostatic recharge. A novel PEF generator was developed, featuring precise control over pulse parameters and significant

Attachment of microbial bodies including the corona virus on the surface of personal protective equipment (PPE) is found to be potential threat of spreading infection. Here, we report the development of a triboelectroceutical fabric (TECF) consisting of commonly available materials, namely, nylon and silicone rubber (SR), for the fabrication of protective gloves on the nitrile platform as model wearable PPE. A small triboelectric device (2 cm × 2 cm) consisting of SR and nylon on nitrile can generate more than 20 V transient or 41 μW output power, which is capable of charging a capacitor up to

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation on 11th March and has led to over 41,000 deaths in the UK. Public Health England guidance for aerosol generating procedures (AGP) requires the donning of personal protective equipment (PPE). We evaluated airway management skills using an in-situ emergency simulation. The scenarios were video recorded and scored by two independent assessors using a skill specific checklist. A total of 34 airway management procedures were evaluated. The checklist involved 13 steps with a maximum score of 26. The med

Personal protective equipment (PPE) that protects healthcare workers from infection is a critical component of infection control strategies in healthcare settings. During a public health emergency response, protecting healthcare workers from infectious disease is essential, given that they provide clinical care to those who fall ill, have a high risk of exposure, and need to be assured of occupational safety. Like most goods in the United States, the PPE market supply is based on demand. The US PPE supply chain has minimal ability to rapidly surge production, resulting in challenges to meeting

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in the global supply chain for personal protective equipment (PPE), necessitating effective decontamination methods to enable the safe reuse of scarce resources like N95 respirators and Tyvek suits. While peracetic acid (PAA) is a potent disinfectant, its liquid form presents significant logistical challenges. This study introduces acetylperoxyborate (APB), a stable solid PAA precursor powder, as a novel solution for point-of-use PPE decontamination. APB was synthesized and characterized, demonstrating excellent thermal stability (decompos

Several health care workers (HCWs) succumbed to infection during the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In some cases, HCWs were even blamed for ignorance of standard operating procedures while using personal protective equipment (PPE). This case-control study evaluated the effectiveness of PPE in prevention of transmission by comparing attitudes toward use of PPE. In a retrospective 1:1 case-control design, HCWs who contracted COVID-19 infection were identified as cases and telephonically contacted. Those HCWs who were working in the same patient care area but were not COVID

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID19) pandemic has pushed health workers to find creative solutions to a global shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE). 3D-printing technology is having an essential role during the pandemic providing solutions for this problem, for instance, modifying full-face snorkel masks or creating low-cost face shields to use as PPE (Ishack and Lipner, 2020 [1]). Otolaryngologists are at increased occupational risk to COVID19 infection due to the exposure to respiratory droplets and aerosols, especially during the routine nose and mouth examinations where coughing

The use of personal protective equipment by veterinary workers during radiographic imaging is inconsistent. While the self-reported use of leaded aprons and thyroid shields approaches 100% in some studies, the use of leaded gloves and eyeglasses is much lower. Previous studies describing personal protective equipment use are based on self-reporting. Objectives of this prospective, observational study were to describe use of leaded personal protective equipment during radiographic imaging by veterinary workers, and to compare observed use with self-reported use. Use of leaded personal protectiv
