There are two main problems in the clinical management of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), namely long-term cancer risk and managing polyp related complications (of which the most important clinically is intussusception). Given the rarity of this condition, the evidence base upon which to make recommendations is small. Furthermore, controversies persist regarding the relationship between PJ polyps, cancer development and cancer risk. In this article we will explore some of these controversies, to put into context the recommendations for clinical ma…

Peutz Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by hamartomatous polyposis and distinct mucocutaneous pigmentation. PJS is associated with an increased risk for several cancers and other complications such as small intestine intussusception, short bowel syndrome, and anemia. Medical management mainly consists of treatment of the polyps and surveillance. This medical management update will review clinical concepts, therapeutic advances, and emphasize features of PJS important to the oral health care provider.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an unusual hamartomatous polyposis of the gastro intestinal (GI) tract, with pigmentation around lips and macules on the buccal mucosa. The case of a 10-year-old girl who presented with intussusception is reported. A polyp was found to be the cause of an invagination. Histologically it was a hamartoma. PJS is a rare syndrome inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Most patients have recurrent episodes of polyp induced bowel intussusception which requires repeated laparotomies. In addition, these patients have an increased risk of malignant disease in gastroi…

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyps in the small bowel and mucocutaneous pigmentation. Patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome often present as surgical emergencies with complications of the polyps, such as intussusception, bowel obstruction and bleeding. Furthermore, repeated operations may be needed in some patients, which may result in short bowel syndrome. Although early reports did not demonstrate a predisposition to cancer in patients with this syndrome, more recent studies have described an increased risk for both gastroi…

In this case report we describe a patient with a confirmed diagnosis of Peutz-Jegher syndrome. A diagnosis made from a positive tissue sample from the small bowels and characteristic hyperpigmentation on the patient's lips. This particular patient wasn't diagnosed till he got intussusception which required an operation. There's a possibility that the diagnosis could have been made earlier in the patient's life because of the hyperpigmented macules on his lips in addition to frequent abdominal pain.

INTRODUCTION: The authors present a case review of a localized Peutz-Jeghers syndrome of the caecum, emulating a carcinoma.
METHODS: The patient who presented with insignificant family history with a diagnosed stenosing tumor of his appendix and histological findings of highly suspected adenocarcinoma, was indicated for surgical revision and right-sided hemicolectomy.
RESULTS: The patient underwent laparoscopically assissted right-sided hemicolectomy and his postoperative course was adequate. The final histological finding diagnosed solitary hamartoma of the Peutz-Jeghers polyp.
CONCLUSION:…

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare condition of muco-cutaneous pigmentation and polyposis of the gut. Reports of its occurrence from the Black world have been infrequent. A case is presented of an 18 year old Nigerian girl with pigmentation of the inner lips and soles of both feet, and recurrent attacks of abdominal pain necessitating two surgical procedures for intestinal obstruction with removal, in both cases, of polyps. Problems of complications and therapeutic modalities are discussed.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract and mucocutaneous melanin pigmentation. This condition can occur and cause symptoms at any age, but intestinal obstruction due to intussusception is a frequent complication. Two cases of this syndrome associated to intussusception are reported. Both patients were girls, 2 and 8 years old respectively and underwent surgical treatment.

A prepubertal boy presented to our paediatric endocrinology clinic with long-standing, progressive bilateral gynaecomastia. The diagnostic evaluation to determine the underlying cause led to the identification of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome with associated testicular micro- and macrolithiasis. The young man was found to have prepubertal gonadotropin concentrations in the context of raised oestradiol levels. Altered sex steroid generation by the abnormal testes is the likely mechanism for the clinical presentation.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by mucocutaneous pigmentation, gastrointestinal polyps and an increased risk of gastrointestinal and other cancers. We report an Indonesian woman, aged 28, with black spots on her lips who had multiple polyps extending from the stomach to the rectum. Her father and a son also had mucocutaneous lesions but they did not undergo gastrointestinal investigations. All three had mutations in the serine/threonine kinase 11 gene (STK11).

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare, autosomal dominant disease linked to a mutation of the STK 11 gene and is characterized by the development of benign hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract in association with a hyperpigmentation on the lips and oral mucosa. Patients affected by PJS have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal and extra-digestive cancer. Malignancy most commonly occurs in the small-bowel. Extra-intestinal malignancies are mostly breast cancer and gynecological tumors or, to a lesser extent, pancreatic cancer. These polyps are also at risk of acute ga…

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by intestinal hamartomatous polyps, mucocutaneous melanin deposition, and increased risk of cancer. Families with PJS from the Johns Hopkins Polyposis Registry were studied to identify the molecular basis of this syndrome and to characterize the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal hamartomas and adenocarcinomas in PJS patients. Linkage analysis in the family originally described by Jeghers in 1949 and five other families confirmed linkage to 19p13.3 near a recently identified gene responsible for PJS. Germ-line mutation…

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps along with the characteristic mucocutaneous freckling. Multiple surgeries for recurrent intussusception in these children may lead to short bowel syndrome. Here we present our experience of management in such patients.
METHODS: From January 2015 to December 2023, we reviewed children of PJS, presented with recurrent intussusceptions. Data were collected regarding presentation, management, and follow-up with attention on management dilemma. Diagnosis of PJS was base…

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant cancer-predisposing condition characterised by intestinal hamartomatous polyps and distinct melanin depositions in skin and mucosa. Small intestinal cancer in patients with PJS usually presents by the third decade. A 7-year-old-PJS boy presented with recurrent episodes of colicky abdominal pain and melena requiring repeated blood transfusions. Abdominal CT scan revealed multiple jejunal polyps with jejunoileal intussusception. On exploration, the intussuscepted bowel was resected along with its mesentery and anastomosed. Simultaneously, mul…
