PURPOSE: To determine whether the spatial topography of retinal sensitivity predicts photophobia severity specifically in glaucoma, testing the hypothesis that localized perifoveal function predicts light aversion independently of visual acuity and global disease severity.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 54 eyes (27 participants; mean age, 64.3 ± 9.7 years) exclusively with glaucoma. Psychophysical photophobia thresholds were quantified using a custom LED-based device. Retinal sensitivity was assessed with the Humphrey Field Analyzer 24-2. To isolate spatial patterns from global severity, s

Photophobia is present in multiple types of headache disorders. The coexistence of photophobia and headache suggested the potential reciprocal interactions between visual and pain pathways. In this review, we summarized the photophobic characteristics in different types of headache disorders in the context of the three diagnostic categories of headache disorders: (1) primary headaches: migraine, tension-type headache, and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias; (2) secondary headaches: headaches attributed to traumatic brain injury, meningitis, non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage and disorder of

OBJECTIVE: To review clinical and pre-clinical evidence supporting the role of visual pathways, from the eye to the cortex, in the development of photophobia in headache disorders.
BACKGROUND: Photophobia is a poorly understood light-induced phenomenon that emerges in a variety of neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Over the years, multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain its causes; however, scarce research and lack of systematic assessment of photophobia in patients has made the search for answers quite challenging. In the field of headaches, significant progress has been

It is recognized today that albinism is accompanied by a cohort of ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic problems. These may not always be as obvious to the casual observer as the lack of pigment in the eyebrows, hair, or skin, and thus early descriptions of this rare genetic condition may have initially focused on the unusual colour of the hair, skin, or eyebrows and not the eye-related problems. While it is not easy to find an accurate ancient description of albinism, we here propose that a Talmudic account from over 1500 years ago may possibly be describing nystagmus and photophobia in albinism i

A 12-year-old boy born of a nonconsanguineous marriage presented with dry rough skin and photophobia since birth. His growth and developmental milestones were normal and there was no history of any neurological problem, hearing deficit or scarring around the hair follicles. Cutaneous examination revealed diffuse thinning of scalp hair with loss of eyebrows and eyelashes and a sandpapery texture of the skin all over the body, suggestive of ichthyosis follicularis with alopecia and photophobia syndrome.

A mother and daughter having ichthyosis follicularis with alopecia and photophobia (IFAP) are reported, with histopathological and electron microscopic findings. We have followed the clinical course of the mother for 26 years since she was 5 years old, and the daughter since birth. They have had almost all the classical and some of the minor symptoms of IFAP, including severe photophobia, extensive non-inflammatory follicular hyperkeratosis, generalized non-scarring alopecia, hyperkeratosis of the extensor aspect of the four extremities, nail deformity and recurrent cheilitis. In addition, the

Light and sound-induced discomfort and pain thresholds were measured in 26 patients with cervicogenic headache, in 40 patients with tension-type headache, and in 100 headache-free controls. Neither headache group was significantly different as to photophobia and phonophobia, but both were significantly more sensitive to light and sound than controls (p<0.0001), even when patients were tested in the headache-free period (p<0.05). Episodic and chronic tension-type headache had similar photo- and phonophobia thresholds (p> or =0.7). Tension-type headache patients were more photo- and phonophobic

Migraine headache is uniquely exacerbated by light. Using psychophysical assessments in patients with normal eyesight we found that green light exacerbates migraine headache significantly less than white, blue, amber or red lights. To delineate mechanisms, we used electroretinography and visual evoked potential recording in patients, and multi-unit recording of dura- and light-sensitive thalamic neurons in rats to show that green activates cone-driven retinal pathways to a lesser extent than white, blue and red; that thalamic neurons are most responsive to blue and least responsive to green; a

PURPOSE: This study examined the rate of binocular photophobia in intermittent exotropia patients before surgical correction, and the factors affecting this rate. The study also investigated the factors affecting postsurgical disappearance of binocular photophobia.
METHODS: The study involved 162 basic type intermittent exotropia patients who underwent surgical correction between March 2001 and January 2006. The study did not include patients with entropion, congenital cataract, or retinal abnormalities. Parents of the patients were questioned to determine which patients had monocular eye clo

To localize regional alterations in cerebral glucose metabolism in essential blepharospasm (EB) patients with photophobia. We have studied 22 EB patients by performing positron emission tomography and [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose analysis. The patients were classified into two subgroups, namely, EB with photophobia (P group) and EB without photophobia (NP group), and compared with a healthy control group (n = 44). There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to the severity of motor symptoms or the duration for which the condition persisted. The FDG-PET image

Ichthyosis follicularis, atrichia, and photophobia (IFAP) are typical features of a rare neuroichthyosis termed IFAP syndrome. We demonstrate the ultrastructural findings of the eyes from a 33-year-old patient with IFAP syndrome. Clinically, eyebrows and eyelashes were absent from birth, and photophobia was noted at the age of 1 year. The globes measured 28 and 29 mm, respectively, and both eyes showed a posterior staphyloma. Histopathologically, bilateral centrally located subepithelial avascular corneal scarring with secondary corneal amyloid deposition was found. In addition to already desc

A 22-year-old female patient was referred for glaucoma evaluation due to an unclear bilateral ocular condition. For 6 months she had experienced glare sensitivity and dilated pupils without visual impairment. Initially, bilateral anterior uveitis with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) had been diagnosed and treated locally with topical steroids and latanoprost. Clinical examination revealed bilateral diffuse iris transillumination defects with irregular, nonreactive mydriasis as well as heavily pigmented anterior chamber angles. Extended medical history revealed pneumonia treated with system

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate changes in photophobia using the Turkish version of Utah Photophobia Symptom Impact Scale-12 (UPSIS-12) in patients with episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) treated with galcanezumab, and to examine the relationship between photophobia, migraine outcomes, disability, and treatment response.
BACKGROUND: Photophobia is one of the most bothersome symptoms (MBS) of migraine and may persist during both ictal and interictal periods, leading to substantial impairment in daily functioning. Despite the clear clinical relevance of photophobia, the specific ef

INTRODUCTION: Photophobia is a frequent and often disabling symptom encountered in a wide range of neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Particularly prevalent in migraine, but also observed in common eye diseases, photophobia reflects complex interactions between visual and nociceptive pathways. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical features, pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic strategies of photophobia from both neurological and ophthalmological perspectives.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted u

OBJECTIVE: To examine cerebral functional alterations associated with sensory processing in patients with migraine and constant photophobia.
BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common headache disorder that presents with photophobia in many patients during attacks. Furthermore, some patients with migraine experience constant photophobia, even during headache-free intervals, leading to a compromised quality of life.
METHODS: This prospective, case-control study included 40 patients with migraine (18 male and 22 female) who were recruited at an eye hospital and eye clinic. The patients were divided into

INTRODUCTION: Photophobia is a symptom of abnormal light intolerance without pain sensation that requires an anamnesis and an examination to diagnose an underlying etiology.
BASIC PROCEDURE: This article focuses on 30 clinical cases with isolated intense photophobia and on the review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to establish diagnostic criteria for photophobia.
RESULTS: The etiology of photophobia appears to be at the level of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells known as melanopsin cells and at a neurochemical level mediated by calcitonin-
