A Pilot Randomized Trial of Home-Based, Video-Supervised Exercise on Muscle Metabolism and Physical Endurance in Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Muscle impairment in chronic kidney disease (CKD) contributes to decreased physical performance, frailty, and higher mortality risk. Regular exercise improves muscle function in CKD. This pilot randomized controlled study evaluated the efficacy of a home-based, video-supervised exercise program on muscle function and physical endurance in CKD. METHODS: Sedentary adults (n=32) with moderate-to-severe nondialysis CKD (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73m 2 ) were randomized to 12 weeks of moderately intense home-based, video-supervised exercise or usual care. Co-primary outcomes included in-vivo m

Association of Core Muscle Endurance Times With Balance, Fatigue, Physical Activity Level, and Kyphosis Angle in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Core muscle endurance (CME), which is the ability of sustaining the activity of trunk muscles, has been shown to be lower in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The aim was to investigate the possible relationship between CME times and balance, fatigue, physical activity (PA) level, and thoracic kyphosis angle. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with AS with a mean age of 41.0 years (interquartile range, 25/75 years; 29.0/51.0 years) were included in the study. Core muscle endurance times were assessed by using trunk extension, trunk flexion, and side bridge tests. Overa

Testing the role of cognitive inhibition in physical endurance using high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation over the prefrontal cortex.

The aim of this study was to clarify the role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in physical effort regulation. We hypothesized that the PFC would be progressively involved in physical endurance through the engagement of cognitive inhibition, which would be necessary to maintain effort by inhibiting fatigue-related cues. This hypothesis was examined using a double-blind, sham-controlled, within-subjects study (N = 20) using high-definition (HD) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Participants had to maintain a knee extensor contract

Association of accelerometer-measured physical activity, back static muscular endurance and abdominal obesity with radicular pain and non-specific low back pain.

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide and often associated with lifestyle factors. However, studies further examining the role of these lifestyle factors in non-specific low back pain in comparison with radicular pain are sparse. The aim of this cross sectional study was to investigate how diverse lifestyle factors are associated with LBP. The study population of 3385 middle aged adults with and without low back pain was drawn from a large Birth 1966 Cohort. Outcome measures were steps per day, abdominal obesity, physical activity and endurance of the back muscles. B

Effects of Tiotropium/Olodaterol on Activity-Related Breathlessness, Exercise Endurance and Physical Activity in Patients with COPD: Narrative Review with Meta-/Pooled Analyses.

One of the most debilitating symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is breathlessness, which leads to avoidance of physical activities in daily living and hastens clinical deterioration. Treatment of patients with COPD with inhaled long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA)/long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) combination therapy improves airflow limitation, reduces breathlessness compared with LAMA or LABA monotherapies, and improves health status and quality of life. A large clinical trial programme focusing on the effects of tiotropium/olodaterol combination therapy demonstrated th

Integrative effects of saffron and physical activity on endurance performance, quality of life, cognitive, emotional, and metabolic outcomes in age-related and neurodegenerative diseases.

Age-related diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, type 2 diabetes, neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and age-related eye diseases, represent leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide. Growing evidence highlights the therapeutic promise of non-pharmacological interventions, notably saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and structured exercise, both of which exert pleiotropic effects through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective pathways. In this review, we summarize current experimental and clinical data on saffron's bioactive compo

Effects of Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training on Measures of Physical Fitness in Healthy Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

BackgroundThere is evidence that in older adults the combination of strength training (ST) and endurance training (ET) (i.e., concurrent training [CT]) has similar effects on measures of muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance (CRE) compared with single-mode ST or ET, respectively. Therefore, CT seems to be an effective method to target broad aspects of physical fitness in older adults.ObjectivesThe aim was to examine the effects of CT on measures of physical fitness (i.e., muscle strength, power, balance and CRE) in healthy middle-aged and older adults aged between 50 and 73 years.
