Adoption of C-reactive protein point-of-care tests for the management of acute childhood infections in primary care in the Netherlands and England: a comparative health systems analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of point of care (POC) tests varies across Europe, but research into what drives this variability is lacking. Focusing on CRP POC tests, we aimed to understand what factors contribute to high versus low adoption of the tests, and also to explore whether they are used in children. METHODS: We used a comparative qualitative case study approach to explore the implementation of CRP POC tests in the Netherlands and England. These countries were selected because although they have similar primary healthcare systems, the availability of CRP POC tests in General Practices is very

Integrating family planning services into HIV care: use of a point-of-care electronic medical record system in Lilongwe, Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Integrating family planning (FP) services into human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) clinical care helps improve access to contraceptives for women living with HIV. However, high patient volumes may limit providers' ability to counsel women about pregnancy risks and contraceptive options. OBJECTIVES: To assess trends in the use of contraceptive methods after implementing an  electronic medical record (EMR) system with FP questions and determine the reasons for non-use of contraceptives among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the Martin

A rapid point-of-care detection system for OVA-specific IgG and IgE utilizing a rotational SlipChip.

Allergic diseases affect approximately 22% of the global population. Rapid and accurate identification of causative allergens is essential for enabling timely clinical intervention and preventing re-exposure. Current clinical approaches for in vivo allergen diagnosis often involve risks associated with direct allergen exposure, while many existing in vitro diagnostic methods remain labor-intensive, time-consuming, and technically demanding. For example, the basophil activation test requires sophisticated instrumentation and specialized operational expertise. Therefore, there is an urgent need

Identification of Hepatic Fibrosis and Steatosis via A Point-of-Care Transient Elastography System With Integrated AI.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Transient elastography (TE) is routinely undertaken for non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis and steatosis, but is limited by its bulky design, inadequate imaging guidance and conventional algorithmic framework. Thus, we report a real-time B-mode image-guided, artificial intelligence-assisted, point-of-care TE (AI-POC-TE) system, providing simultaneous liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and a novel multi-domain attenuation parameter (MAP) for fat quantification. We aimed to determine the accuracy of LSM and MAP in diagnosing histology-confirmed fibrosis and steatosis in

Multiwavelength laser diode based portable photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging system for point of care applications.

Vascular diseases are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite having precursor conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD), they are often only diagnosed after the onset of stroke or heart attack. Low-cost, portable, noninvasive, point-of-care (POC), label-free assessment of deep vascular function benefits PAD diagnosis, especially in resource poor settings of the world. Doppler ultrasound-based blood flow measurements can diagnose PAD, albeit with limited sensitivity and specificity. To overcome this, here, we propose the first-of-its-kind dual-modality photoacoustic-

A robust, hand-powered, instrument-free sample preparation system for point-of-care pathogen detection.

Here, we describe a simple, universal protocol for use in nucleic acid testing-based pathogen diagnostics, which requires only hand-powered sample preparation, including the processes of pathogen enrichment and nucleic acid isolation. The protocol uses low-cost amine-functionalized diatomaceous earth with a 1-μm Teflon filter as a reaction matrix in both stages of the process, using homobifunctional imidoesters. Using a simple syringe as a pump, the capture efficiency for a large sample volume (<50 mL) was enhanced by up to 98.3%, and the detection limit was 1 CFU/mL, 100-fold better than that

How do you get the Rose Bengal Test at the point-of-care to diagnose brucellosis in Africa? The importance of a systems approach.

Brucellosis is a major neglected zoonotic disease, whose burden both in animals and humans is severely under-reported. Diagnosis in humans identifies cases in order to treat the disease at the individual level. In animals diagnosis is implemented at the population level in the context of appropriate control or eradication strategies. Molecular and bacteriological diagnosis are rarely undertaken in sub-Saharan Africa, at least outside research projects, due to cost, skills and laboratory infrastructure issues. The brucellosis toolbox contains a wide range of serological tests, but the perfect t

Neuroprosthetic contact lens enabled sensorimotor system for point-of-care monitoring and feedback of intraocular pressure.

The wearable contact lens that continuously monitors intraocular pressure (IOP) facilitates prompt and early-state medical treatments of oculopathies such as glaucoma, postoperative myopia, etc. However, either taking drugs for pre-treatment or delaying the treatment process in the absence of a neural feedback component cannot realize accurate diagnosis or effective treatment. Herein, a neuroprosthetic contact lens enabled sensorimotor system is reported, which consists of a smart contact lens with Ti3C2Tx Wheatstone bridge structured IOP strain sensor, a Ti3C2Tx temperature sensor and an IOP

Automated Management of Exercise Intervention at the Point of Care: Application of a Web-Based Leg Training System.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in information and communication technology have prompted development of Web-based health tools to promote physical activity, the key component of cardiac rehabilitation and chronic disease management. Mobile apps can facilitate behavioral changes and help in exercise monitoring, although actual training usually takes place away from the point of care in specialized gyms or outdoors. Daily participation in conventional physical activities is expensive, time consuming, and mostly relies on self-management abilities of patients who are typically aged, overweight, and

Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Respiratory Viruses at Single-Nucleotide Resolution with an Autocatalytic Rolling Circle Amplification System.

Amid the continuing epidemic of respiratory viruses (RVs), clinical diagnostics need scalable technologies that enable point-of-care testing of pathogenic viruses with high accuracy and specificity. Here, we propose an autocatalytic rolling circle amplification (A-RCA) system for the precise identification of RV genomic markers through sequence-specific target recognition and synergistic catalytic signal amplification. The system, which we incorporated into lateral-flow strip tests, exploits the cross-stimulation between deoxyribonuclease (DNAzyme) self-cleavage reaction and rolling circle amp
