Real-time tracking must be at the core of sustainable development goals.

How close are we to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs)? No one really knows. As the world enters the countdown to 2030, uncertainty remains. Progress remains fragmented, hindered by data gaps, opaque governance, and politicization that limits scientific communication and real-time policy adaptation. Limitations reveal the need to rethink how sustainability is measured, reported, and governed. Using the SDGs, we argue that monitoring systems fail to capture real-time dynamics, leaving humanity rudderless amid sustainability crises. In an era of big data, future sustainability ag

Sexual Assault in the Ivory Tower: Public Opinion on University Accountability and Mandatory Reporting.

Highly publicized college sex crimes have recently captured public and policy attention. In response, greater discussion has turned to institutional accountability and controversial reforms such as mandatory reporting (MR). No study to date has measured public perceptions of campus sex assault procedures, however. This omission is notable because public opinion can directly and indirectly shape crime policy and because the topic has become increasingly politicized. Drawing on a 2015 poll of Virginia residents, this study evaluates views about campus sexual assault policy. Results indicate that

The politics of AIDS. Introduction.

From its first designation as a gay plague, HIV/AIDS has been a heavily politicized disease, a disease that has fractured official standard operating procedures in science, medicine, public health and governance. In many ways, AIDS helped to expose a battleground of contested interests while emerging as an arena for both the re-assertion of 'traditional' (i.e. dominant) values as well as rebellion against the traditional politics of exclusion and privilege. Yet the politics of AIDS has remained an understudied domain. This set of papers seeks to overcome this neglect by exploring underlying po

The Erosion of a Pillar of Public Health: ACIP's Role and the Future of US Vaccine Policy Post-June 2025.

Since June 2025, the restructuring of the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)-including the abrupt replacement of all voting members and leadership-marked a significant departure from its longstanding norms of continuity and governance. Subsequent deviations from evidence-based policymaking raise concerns about the independence, transparency, and scientific rigor of vaccine policies under the new Department of Health and Human Services administration. The politicization of deliberations, selective use of questionable evidence, and disregard for established methodological sta

Revitalizing faith: an inquiry into political Sufism and religious continuity in contemporary Kazakhstan.

The article embarks upon a study of political Sufism in contemporary Kazakhstan and patterns of religious continuity through an examination of Islamic manifestations that stretch back centuries, juxtaposed with the current state religious policy. It examines the role of the Muftiate's "official Islam" in shaping the life of religious communities, exploring the intricate interplay between religious identity, secularism, and public perception in the post-Soviet landscape. The author employed a multi-faceted research approach, integrating historical analysis, policy examination, and an ethnograph

Anniversary fever? History and the culture of NHS celebration.

Delivered a day after Britain's National Health Service (NHS) reached its 75th year since its opening on the Appointed Day of 5 July 1948, the Pimlott Lecture for 2023 explored the culture of NHS anniversary-making. What can the marking of these anniversaries tell us about changing attitudes towards the service, and indeed, the British state? Here, examining evidence from the media, government archives, and Mass Observation, we argue that NHS anniversaries have long functioned as points of reflection but that their role as moments of national celebration and even communion has come to the fore

Private Acts, Social Consequences by Ronald Bayer (New York: Free Press; 1989).

Bayer's approach is most effective when he uses it to describe the politicized nature of AIDS policy in the United States. He succeeds in showing the reader that public health authorities dealing with the spread of HIV/AIDS had a wide variety of competing interests to take into account in formulating AIDS social policy and that political interest groups, most notably gay community organizations, played a large role in fashioning AIDS policy. Those who might have doubted the significance of contextual factors such as these for health policy, and especially for AIDS policy, will be convinced of

The social experience of participation in a COVID-19 vaccine trial: Subjects' motivations, others' concerns, and insights for vaccine promotion.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy could undermine the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination programs. Knowledge about people's lived experiences regarding COVID-19 vaccination can enhance vaccine promotion and increase uptake. AIM: To use COVID-19 vaccine trial participants' experiences to identify key themes in the lived experience of vaccination early in the vaccine approval and distribution process. METHODS: We interviewed 31 participants in the Iowa City, Iowa US site of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine phase 3 clinical trial. While trial participation differs from clinical receipt of an

Gendered health inequities and policy silences: Insights from deliberative dialogues on unpaid care and domestic work in sub-Saharan Africa.

The disproportionate allocation of unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW) to women remains a major structural barrier to their health, one that was severely exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This research draws on four Deliberative Dialogues (DDs) conducted with community members and policymakers in Uganda and Kenya to examine how UCDW was experienced, politicized, and imagined as a site for transformation. We propose an integrated conceptual framework that utilizes the ILO's "5 Rs" (Recognize, Reduce, Redistribute, Reward, and Represent) as a scaffold to operationalize necropolitics, femini

Trust, Transparency, and the Fragile Promise of Data Governance in the Era of Modernization.

Public health data modernization in the United States has accelerated since COVID-19 exposed systemic weaknesses in fragmented data infrastructure and governance. Technical solutions have advanced, but legal and relational barriers still complicate data sharing across jurisdictions. Traditionally, interjurisdictional data sharing has relied on individually negotiated Data Use Agreements (DUAs), a process that is both resource-heavy and often opaque. To address this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have proposed a Core DUA to standardize terms and reduce administrative burden. Ho

The Politics of Clinic and Critique in Southern Brazil.

Drawing on a historical ethnography of how Brazil's post-dictatorial psychiatric reforms have shaped young people's lives, this paper builds on Eve Sedgwick's analysis of the hermeneutics of suspicion to show that narrow applications of Foucault's biopower concept nurture forms of resistance to bio-reductionism centred primarily on epistemic deconstruction. To unsettle this hermeneutic, I put young people's theories of power into conversation with Georges Canguilhem's concept of the milieu and with feminist scholars' work on prefigurative politics. I introduce the concepts of threading and unt

Refracting Blame in the Fentanyl Era: The Narrative Battleground on Facebook and Instagram.

Background: More than 80,000 Americans died of drug overdoses between August 2022 and August 2023, a crisis most recently driven by synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Objectives: To investigate how blame for the opioid crisis is constructed within the most engaging content on Facebook and Instagram by identifying the dominant thematic frames and patterns of blame attribution. Using CrowdTangle, we collected US opioid-related posts from July 2022 to June 2023 and analyzed the top 0.5% most-engaged posts (1,267 total). [Scientific research in times of pandemics.].

When a pandemic occurs, scientific research moves fast in order to achieve readily results, such as effective therapies to fight the SARS-CoV-2 and vaccines. But this high-speed science, engaged by the emergency and characterized by the explosion of online publications in preprint form not subject to scrutiny by peer reviewers, carries some risks. And it represents a challenge to maintain research integrity and to comply with those globally recognized standard principles of fairness. Competition and the pressure to publish immediately - a way of encouraging rapid data sharing - can favor the d

Science is not sufficient: Irving J. Selikoff and the asbestos tragedy.

Professor Irving J. Selikoff (1915-1992) was America's foremost medical expert on asbestos-related diseases between the 1960s and early 1990s. He was also well known to the public for his media appearances on the burgeoning asbestos problem. Yet his reputation has been strikingly mixed. On the one hand, he has been portrayed as a mischief maker and irresponsible demagogue, who exaggerated the risks of asbestos and so destroyed an industry; on the other, as a pioneer in asbestos epidemiology, whose landmark studies of insulation (and other) workers demonstrated the severity of a modern occupati

When health meets politics: Selective gatekeeping of health experts in Chinese media during COVID-19.

Recent global health crises have underscored the need for adaptive policymaking amid evolving evidence, alongside the political vulnerability of science communication. This study investigates the politics of health policy communication in a system where the government, media, and experts closely coordinate their messaging. We propose a Selective Gatekeeping framework to explain how state and media actors collaborate to amplify scientific voices aligned with policy objectives while marginalizing alternative perspectives. Using China's COVID-19 policy (2020-2022) as a case study, we analyze over

Racism in the science and practice of psychotherapy.

We discuss a recent controversy that occurred in The Cognitive Behavioural Therapist over whether Lilienfeld's critical views on microaggressions theory and research reflect racist beliefs, as alleged by some. This is one of many recent examples of a profoundly antiscientific practice whereby racism allegations chill scientific debate and open inquiry on important research issues. This produces an overtly politicized science that has a corrosive effect on scientific progress and ultimately the useful application of research in clinical practice. The microaggressions controversy provides an esp

Embodied science and the politics of ice: masculinity and ideology in the 1928 German-Soviet Alai-Pamir expedition and the mapping of the Fedchenko glacier.

This article examines the 1928 German-Soviet Alai-Pamir expedition as a moment when different scientific traditions, political ambitions and bodily practices met in the high-altitude borderlands of Central Asia. Focusing on the mapping of the Fedchenko glacier, it argues that knowledge emerged not simply from instruments and protocols, but from the difficult encounter between bodies, technical tools and a resistant glacial landscape. The glacier thus became more than a physical object of study; it was an epistemologically charged terrain where ways of knowing were tested and made visible. Germ

The Work of a Revolutionary: A Psychobiography and Careerography of Angela Y. Davis.

Dr. Angela Y. Davis is a political activist, academician, and writer who has navigated and discussed issues of race, class, gender, and USA social policies across her 75 years of life. Davis's activism established her as the icon of a larger social movement and further related to her decision-making and legacy. Using psychobiographical methods, data were gathered through publicly available sources to explore Davis's personal, professional, and representational life, as well as understand Davis's lived experience through a socio-cultural-historical perspective. Two established theories, Social

The DARK Side of Total Synthesis: Strategies and Tactics in Psychoactive Drug Production.

Humankind has used and abused psychoactive drugs for millennia. Formally, a psychoactive drug is any agent that alters cognition and mood. The term "psychotropic drug" is neutral and describes the entire class of substrates, licit and illicit, of interest to governmental drug policy. While these drugs are prescribed for issues ranging from pain management to anxiety, they are also used recreationally. In fact, the current opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug crisis in American history. While the topic is highly politicized with racial, gender, and socioeconomic elements, there is no denying t

State Advisory Boards and the Politics of Expertise in US Public Health.

This essay examines the evolving relationship between public health expertise and politics in the United States, focusing on the emergence of state advisory boards during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. While public health decision-making has always involved political trade-offs, recent developments reflect a more direct politicization of federal institutions, including changes in advisory committee composition, constraints on scientific autonomy, and declining public trust. In response, several states have created independent advisory bodies to review federal guidance and guide vaccination p
