Acquired port wine stain of the upper eyelid after cluster headache.

A 69-year-old white man with a medical history of left-sided cluster headaches presented for evaluation of dermatochalasis. The left upper eyelid demonstrated red-pink, blanchable macules that coalesced in a patch. The lesion appeared after an episode of a cluster headache. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty permitted en bloc removal of most of the lesion. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated aggregates of telangiectatic blood vessels in the papillary dermis consistent with the diagnosis of an acquired port wine stain. The authors report, to their knowledge, the first description of an acquired po

Pupil damage after periorbital laser treatment of a port-wine stain.

BACKGROUND: The increase in the number of laser treatments has led to an increase in the number of therapy-related adverse effects. Herein we report a case in which long-term adverse effects occurred after periorbital laser treatment of a treatment-resistant port-wine stain using a long-pulsed alexandrite laser without protective eyewear. OBSERVATIONS: A 33-year-old woman with a therapy-resistant port-wine stain was treated periorbitally with a 755-nm long-pulsed alexandrite laser after several treatment sessions with the pulsed-dye laser; she was not given protective eye shields. Within a fe

[Acquired flat angiomas in the form of a port-wine stain].

The development of flat angiomas in the form of a "port-wine stain" is an infrequent event in adults. We describe two cases of acquired flat angioma in the form of a "port-wine stain", which began in the second decade of life and grew slowly and steadily until reaching a large size. In the first case, it affected the front and back of the trunk, and in the second patient, the neck and left shoulder. Histopathology showed ectatic vessels in the papillary and reticular dermis, with no proliferation of endothelial cells.

Facial Port-Wine Stain Phenotypes Associated with Glaucoma Risk in Neonates.

PURPOSE: To determine if the size and location of facial port-wine stains (PWS) can predict glaucoma risk in neonates. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Children with facial PWS who had undergone ophthalmologic examination within 4 weeks of their birth were included. Clinical information, including facial photographs, intraocular pressure, corneal diameter, optic disc cup-to-disc ratio, and Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) diagnoses were collected. Based on facial photographs, PWS distribution, eyelid involvement, and PWS scores according to degree of involvement in each embryonic faci

Port-Wine Stains and Intraoral Hemangiomas: A Case Series.

Port-wine stains (PWSs), also called port-wine birthmarks or nevus flammeus, are hamartomatous vascular capillary malformations that clinically appear as erythematous areas on the buccal mucosa, vermilion border of the lip, gingiva, or pink to port-wine-colored patches on skin since birth and persist throughout life. On the face, they occur in the area supplied by the trigeminal nerve. PWSs have structural abnormalities of the intradermal capillaries. PWSs on the skin and oral mucosa contain ectatic capillaries in the dermis and submucosa, respectively. PWSs occur anywhere, and the oral mucosa

Pathogenesis of Port-Wine Stains: Directions for Future Therapies.

Port-wine stains (PWSs) are congenital vascular malformations that involve the skin and mucosa. To date, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and progression of PWSs are yet to be clearly elucidated. The potential reasons for dilated vessels are as follows: (1) somatic GNAQ (R183Q) mutations that form enlarged capillary malformation-like vessels through angiopoietin-2, (2) decreased perivascular nerve elements, (3) the coexistence of Eph receptor B1 and ephrin B2, and (4) the deficiency of αSMA expression in pericytes. In addition, ERK, c-JNK, P70S6K, AKT, PI3K, and PKC are assumed to be

Abnormal tooth maturation associated with port wine stains.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the potential impact of port wine stains on the development of permanent teeth in mixed dentition and provide insights for managing tooth abnormalities in patients with port wine stains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 21 patients with mixed dentition and unilateral maxillary port wine stains. Two researchers concurrently utilized Nolla Analysis to assess the developmental stage of bilateral maxillary and permanent mandibular teeth based on panoramic radiographs. The cumulative developmental values of upper and lower perm

Wavelength optimization for the laser treatment of port wine stains.

Based on the well-known principle of selective photothermolysis, laser has been a promising way for the treatment of port wine stains (PWSs). The laser wavelengths used for PWS's clinical treatment include but are not limited to pulsed dye laser (PDL) in 585-600 nm, long-pulse 755-nm alexandrite, and 1064-nm Nd:YAG lasers. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal wavelength for PWS's laser treatment. A two-scale mathematic model was constructed to simultaneously quantify macroscale laser energy attenuation in two-layered bulk skin and microscale local energy absorption on tar

Quality of life in adults with facial port-wine stains.

BACKGROUND: Facial port-wine stains (PWS) are considered by some an aesthetic skin problem, yet impact on quality of life (QoL) has not been objectively documented. OBJECTIVE: We sought to (1) characterize the effect of PWS on QoL in adults, (2) to identify the clinical and demographic factors that affect QoL, and (3) to compare our results with QoL studies in other skin conditions. METHODS: In total, 244 adults with facial PWS completed an online QoL survey, which included the Skindex-29 instrument. RESULTS: QoL in adults with facial PWS was diminished, especially from an emotional perspec

The treatment of port wine stains with the carbon dioxide laser.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser was used to treat 51 patients with port wine stains (PWS). Twenty-nine patients were adults who had failed to respond to argon or continuous wave dye laser therapy and 22 patients were children with pink PWS. Follow-up assessment of 40 patients 12 months after treatment revealed an excellent or good result in 74% of adults and 53% of children. The results in adult 'therapeutic failures' was encouraging and CO2 laser therapy can be advised for this group. Two children had a poor result, one with a hypertrophic scar, and treatment in this age group with the CO2 las

Unilateral port wine stain on the face: a case report and review.

INTRODUCTION: Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a sporadic, progressive, congenital condition that occurs due to hamartomatous malformation and is usually referred to as a "port wine stain." It is characterized by trisymptomatic forms that include facial port wine stain, glaucoma, and leptomeningeal calcifications. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of missing teeth in the mandibular anterior region that had recently exfoliated following mobility. A unilateral port wine stain noted on the left side of her face appeared to follow the left maxillary div

Necrobiosis lipoidica arising in a port wine stain treated with topical ruxolitinib.

We present a unique case of necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) arising within a port-wine stain (PWS), which, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported. NL is a rare granulomatous disorder often associated with diabetes mellitus, characterized by chronic inflammation and microvascular dysfunction. PWS, a congenital vascular malformation, results from defective endothelial differentiation and capillary malformation. The coexistence of these conditions suggests a potential link in their pathophysiological mechanisms, including inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and shared signaling pathways

A case of acquired port wine stain: an association with repeated sunburn?

BACKGROUND: Unlike congenital port wine stain (PWS), an acquired PWS is a rare vascular lesion that develops later in life. Although solar damage is associated with acquired PWS, there is no reported case of acquired PWS after sunburn in the literature. METHODS: We report a case of a 54-year-old man diagnosed with acquired PWS possibly caused by repeated sunburn. RESULTS: We recommended laser treatment to our patient; however, the patient did not chose to receive any treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our case demonstrates a possible rare occurrence of an acquired PWS after sunburn with larger lesions

Peripheral Ameloblastoma of Upper Gingiva in a Patient with Port-Wine Stain.

The peripheral ameloblastoma (PA), also known as extraosseous ameloblastoma, is a rare soft tissue tumor of odontogenic origin, accounting for 1-5% of all ameloblastoma. In some cases, saucerization of underlying bone is the only radiological evidence of this lesion, and PA has identical histological characteristics of intraosseous ameloblastoma. However, it is slow growing, less aggressive, and less invasive in nature. The present report describes a rare case of PA in the maxillary labial gingiva of a 37-year-old man with port-wine vascular malformation. PA was clinically diagnosed as a pyoge
