Effects of omission probability on omitted stimulus potentials.

Predictions of upcoming sensory events allow the brain to minimize surprises and optimize behavior. When an expected event fails to happen, omitted stimulus potentials (OSPs) occur, consisting of early negative components (oN1 and oN2) and a later positive component (oP3). These OSPs are thought to reflect hierarchical stages of prediction-error signaling, but the functional significance of each component remains unclear. To better characterize these components, this study examined how omission probabilities affect the amplitudes of these components. Participants repeatedly pressed a button at

Opportunity Neglect: An Aversion to Low-Probability Gains.

Seven preregistered studies (N = 2,890, adult participants) conducted in the field, in the lab, and online documented opportunity neglect: a tendency to reject opportunities with low probability of success even when they come with little or no objective cost (e.g., time, money, reputation). Participants rejected a low-probability opportunity in an everyday context (Study 1). Participants also rejected incentive-compatible gambles with positive expected value-for both goods (Study 2) and money (Studies 3-7)-even with no possibility of monetary loss and nontrivial rewards (e.g., a 1% chance at $

Probability of a zoonotic spillover with seasonal variation.

Zoonotic infectious diseases are spread from animals to humans. It is estimated that over 60% of human infectious diseases are zoonotic and 75% of them are emerging zoonoses. The majority of emerging zoonotic infectious diseases are caused by viruses including avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, coronaviruses and hantaviruses. Spillover of infection from animals to humans depends on a complex transmission pathway, which is influenced by epidemiological and environmental processes. In this investigation, the focus is on direct transmission between animals and humans and the effects of seasonal vari

Cap-Score™ prospectively predicts probability of pregnancy.

Semen analysis (SA) poorly predicts male fertility, because it does not assess sperm fertilizing ability. The percentage of capacitated sperm determined by GM1 localization ("Cap-Score™"), differs between cohorts of fertile and potentially infertile men, and retrospectively, between men conceiving or failing to conceive by intrauterine insemination (IUI). Here, we prospectively tested whether Cap-Score can predict male fertility with the outcome being clinical pregnancy within ≤3 IUI cycles. Cap-Score and SA were performed (n = 208) with outcomes initially available for 91 men. Men were predic

High lifetime probability of screen-detected cervical abnormalities.

Objective Regular screening and follow-up is an important key to cervical cancer prevention; however, screening inevitably detects mild or borderline abnormalities that would never progress to a more severe stage. We analysed the cumulative probability and recurrence of cervical abnormalities in the Finnish organized screening programme during a 22-year follow-up. Methods Screening histories were collected for 364,487 women born between 1950 and 1965. Data consisted of 1 207,017 routine screens and 88,143 follow-up screens between 1991 and 2012. Probabilities of cervical abnormalities by age w

Statistical validation of normal tissue complication probability models.

PURPOSE: To investigate the applicability and value of double cross-validation and permutation tests as established statistical approaches in the validation of normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A penalized regression method, LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator), was used to build NTCP models for xerostomia after radiation therapy treatment of head-and-neck cancer. Model assessment was based on the likelihood function and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: Repeated double cross-validation showed th

An fMRI study of reward-related probability learning.

The human striatum has been implicated in processing reward-related information. More recently, activity in the striatum, particularly the caudate nucleus, has been observed when a contingency between behavior and reward exists, suggesting a role for the caudate in reinforcement-based learning. Using a gambling paradigm, in which affective feedback (reward and punishment) followed simple, random guesses on a trial by trial basis, we sought to investigate the role of the caudate nucleus as reward-related learning progressed. Participants were instructed to make a guess regarding the value of a

[Survival analysis with competing risks: estimating failure probability].

OBJECTIVE: To show the impact of competing risks of death on survival analysis. METHOD: We provide an example of survival time without chronic rejection after heart transplantation, where death before rejection acts as a competing risk. Using a computer simulation, we compare the Kaplan-Meier estimator and the multiple decrement model. RESULTS: The Kaplan-Meier method overestimated the probability of rejection. Next, we illustrate the use of the multiple decrement model to analyze secondary end points (in our example: death after rejection). Finally, we discuss Kaplan-Meier assumptions and w

Estimating the probability for major gene Alzheimer disease.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is neuropsychiatric illness caused by multiple etiologies. Prediction of whether AD is genetically based in a given family is problematic because of censoring bias among unaffected relatives as a consequence of the late onset of the disorder, diagnostic uncertainties, heterogeneity, and limited information in a single family. We have developed a method based on Bayesian probability to compute values for a continuous variable that ranks AD families as having a major gene form of AD (MGAD). In addition, we have compared the Bayesian method with a maximum-likelihood approac

Panic attacks during sleep: a hyperventilation-probability model.

Panic attacks during sleep are analysed in terms of a hyperventilation theory of panic disorder. The theory assumes that panic attacks during sleep are a manifestation of severe chronic hyperventilation, a dysfunctional state in which renal compensation has led to a relatively steady state of diminished bicarbonate. Reductions in respiration during deep non-REM sleep lead to respiratory acidosis which triggers hyperventilatory hypocapnea and subsequent panic. A probability model designed to predict when during sleep panic attacks are likely to occur is supported by relevant data from studies o

The use of probability trees in genetic counselling.

Calculation of genetic risks of persons who may be carriers of X-linked recessive conditions or autosomal dominant diseases with incomplete or delayed penetrance often requires the use of Bayes' theorem. Available methods of computing such risks are often too difficult or too time-consuming for clinicians to use routinely. Probability trees provide a rapid and simple graphical means of estimating genetic risks even in complex clinical situations. The use of probability trees is easily learned because the logic upon which they are based is inherent in their structure.

[Occupational hearing loss as probability diagnosis (author's transl)].

The paper discusses the question of which factors that are to be taken into consideration are of relevance to the expert in making his differential diagnosis in cases of occupational hearing loss. On the basis of the medical literature and earlier investigations the discussion is concerned with the proof of recruitment as well as with the effects of the exposure level and the exposure duration. Special reference is made to the "typical" hearing-threshold curve. The result of the examination with factor-analysis of 14,684 pure tone audiograms suggests that a small involvement of low and medium

Normal Tissue Complication Probability Modeling for Proton Therapy.

Proton therapy requires accurate, reliable normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models for treatment planning and evidence-based patient selection. This review examines 2 challenges in proton therapy: developing NTCP models that accurately reflect proton-specific toxicity and managing NTCP prediction uncertainty to ensure reliable clinical decision-making. Regarding model accuracy, photon-derived NTCP models work for some endpoints but fail for others when proton therapy exhibits distinct dose-response characteristics, indicating that the need for proton-specific models is endpoint-de

Probability and Neurodegeneration: Alzheimer's Disease and Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms by which sporadic young-onset neurodegenerative processes develop are uncertain. METHODS: We have previously proposed that stochastic processes involving sequence changes at a DNA, RNA, or protein level in critical genes and proteins might be important to this process. Further investigation points to the contribution of probabilistic states in other factors involved in neurodegenerative conditions, such as-in the case of young onset Alzheimer's disease-head injury, apolipoprotein ε4 alleles and other elements that, by the interaction of conditional probabilities in

Echocardiographic probability of pulmonary hypertension: a validation study.

BACKGROUND: According to current guidelines, the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension (PH) relies on echocardiographic probability followed by right heart catheterisation (RHC). How echocardiography predicts PH recently redefined by mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) >20 mmHg instead of ≥25 mmHg and pulmonary vascular disease defined by pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) ≥3 or >2 WU has not been established. METHODS: A total of 278 patients referred for PH underwent comprehensive echocardiography followed by RHC. 15 patients (5.4%) were excluded because of insufficient quality echocardio

Probability of an Autism Diagnosis by Gestational Age.

Early preterm infants (EPT) (<33 6/7 weeks) are at increased risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) but prevalence estimates vary widely across studies. Furthermore, there are very few studies addressing the association between late preterm (LPT) births (34-36 6/7 weeks) and ASDs. To address the question of whether LPT infants carry the same risk for ASDs as full-term infants, this study aimed to estimate the relative probability of an ASD diagnosis using Bayes rule. A retrospective cohort analysis of 406 children was undertaken to look at gestational age, ASDs, and birth history. The appli

Probability model for estimating colorectal polyp progression rates.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer related deaths in the United States. Experts estimate that about 85% of CRCs begin as precancerous polyps, early detection and treatment of which can significantly reduce the risk of CRC. Hence, it is imperative to develop population-wide intervention strategies for early detection of polyps. Development of such strategies requires precise values of population-specific rates of incidence of polyp and its progression to cancerous stage. There has been a considerable amount of research in r
