Lactic acid bacteria as probiotics.

A number of Lactobacillus species, Bifidobacterium sp, Saccharomyces boulardii, and some other microbes have been proposed as and are used as probiotic strains, i.e. live microorganisms as food supplement in order to benefit health. The health claims range from rather vague as regulation of bowel activity and increasing of well-being to more specific, such as exerting antagonistic effect on the gastroenteric pathogens Clostridium difficile, Campylobacter jejuni, Helicobacter pylori and rotavirus, neutralising food mutagens produced in colon, shifting the immune response towards a Th2 response,

Prevention of infections by probiotics.

'Viable bacteria that exhibit beneficial effects for health based on improvement of balance of intestinal bacterial flora' was the most common definition of probiotics, but the diversity of their action mechanisms, including immune regulation, has been clarified, and probiotics have recently been broadly defined as 'live microorganisms which when administered in adequet amounts confer a health benefit on the host'. Coined words such as prebiotics, describing non-digestible food fiber components that contribute to host health by activating proliferation and function of beneficial intestinal bac

Probiotics for mother and child.

For the survival of humankind, nothing can be as important as the health of a mother and a child. As the world's population grows to more than 6 billion, it might seem ridiculous to suggest that any real threat exists to the human species. Diseases have long ravaged populations, as have wars, poverty, and malnutrition. Life today is no different with new and emerging diseases such as SARS and Mad Cow Disease leaving a trail of concern around the planet. All that being said, the AIDS crisis is threatening humans like no other. In countries such as Botswana, close to half the population of pregn

Probiotics--compensation for lactase insufficiency.

Yogurt and other conventional starter cultures and probiotic bacteria in fermented and unfermented milk products improve lactose digestion and eliminate symptoms of intolerance in lactose maldigesters. These beneficial effects are due to microbial beta-galactosidase in the (fermented) milk product, delayed gastrointestinal transit, positive effects on intestinal functions and colonic microflora, and reduced sensitivity to symptoms. Intact bacterial cell walls, which act as a mechanical protection of lactase during gastric transit, and the release of the enzyme into the small intestine are dete

Probiotics in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

The most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) in children include infantile colic, constipation, functional abdominal pain (FAP), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Unfortunately, treatment options for FGID in children are limited, therefore many dietary interventions have been evaluated, including probiotics. This chapter summarizes currently available evidence and recommendations for probiotic use in the treatment of frequent FGIDs in children. The strongest evidence exists for the use of Limosilactobacillus (L.) reuteri DSM 17938 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis

Probiotics for preventing gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with a range of adverse pregnancy outcomes for mother and infant. The prevention of GDM using lifestyle interventions has proven difficult. The gut microbiome (the composite of bacteria present in the intestines) influences host inflammatory pathways, glucose and lipid metabolism and, in other settings, alteration of the gut microbiome has been shown to impact on these host responses. Probiotics are one way of altering the gut microbiome but little is known about their use in influencing the metabolic environment of pregnancy. This

Probiotics and prebiotics in dermatology.

The rapid increase in the medical use of probiotics and prebiotics in recent years has confirmed their excellent safety profile. As immune modulators, they have been used in inflammatory skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis. We review the literature regarding the use of probiotics and prebiotics in dermatology. Probiotics and prebiotics appear to be effective in reducing the incidence of atopic dermatitis in infants, but their role in atopic dermatitis treatment is controversial. Their role in acne, wound healing, and photoprotection is promising, but larger trials are needed before a fi

Probiotics and prebiotics in pediatrics.

This clinical report reviews the currently known health benefits of probiotic and prebiotic products, including those added to commercially available infant formula and other food products for use in children. Probiotics are supplements or foods that contain viable microorganisms that cause alterations of the microflora of the host. Use of probiotics has been shown to be modestly effective in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in (1) treating acute viral gastroenteritis in healthy children; and (2) preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea in healthy children. There is some evidence that probio

[Probiotics and their therapeutic properties].

Probiotics are specific products of microorganisms, and by being biologically active positively act on stabilizing the bacteriological flora of the gastrointestinal tract. They are live or lyophilized bacterial cultures, especially those derived from lactic fermentation (Lactobacillacea and Streptococcacea). The first to use the term probiotics were Lilly and Stillwell in 1965 when referring to substances produced by protozoa, which in turn stimulated the growth of other organisms. Probiotics are devoid of side affects and do not cause accumulation of toxic substances in the body. They are adm

To Probiotic or Not to Probiotic: A Metagenomic Comparison of the Discharge Gut Microbiome of Infants Supplemented With Probiotics in NICU and Those Who Are Not.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is associated with the development of both acute and chronic disease, and the disruption of normal gut microbiome development. Recent studies have sought to both characterize and understand the links between disease and the microbiome. Probiotic treatment may correct for these microbial imbalances and, in turn, mitigate disease. However, the criteria for probiotic supplementation in NICU's in North Queensland, Australia limits its usage to the most premature (<32 weeks gestation) and small for gestational age infants (<1,500 g). Here we use a combination of amplicon a

Antibiotic susceptibility of probiotic strains: Is it reasonable to combine probiotics with antibiotics?

OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study was to determine the in vitro susceptibility of strains collected from marketed probiotics to antibiotics used to treat community-acquired infections. METHODS: The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 16 antibiotics were determined using a gradient strip (E test) or the agar dilution method for fidaxomicin. RESULTS: The probiotics demonstrated various antibiotic patterns. Bacterial probiotics are generally susceptible to most prescribed antibiotics orally administered, whereas yeast probiotics, such as Saccharomyces boulardii, are resistant. CON

Beyond Probiotics: Postbiotics for Healthy Aquaculture.

With a growing global population and strict restrictions on traditional antibiotics, sustainable fish health management is crucial for aquaculture. While live probiotics are popular alternatives, their real-world effectiveness remains highly controversial. Variable effectiveness results from complex interactions with different fish species, differences in fish gastrointestinal anatomy, and variations in environmental parameters such as salinity, pH, and temperature. Furthermore, live probiotics pose risks of ecological disturbance and horizontal gene transfer of antimicrobial resistance. This

An update on probiotics in paediatrics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Probiotics are widely used in paediatrics, but efficacy varies by strain and indication. In 2023, the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Special Interest Group on Gut Microbiota and Modifications issued strain-specific recommendations for gastrointestinal disorders. This review summarises studies published since 2024 to assess whether new evidence warrants changes to these recommendations. RECENT FINDINGS: Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Saccharomyces boulardii are recommended for preventing antibiotic-associated d

Acne Supplementation: Probiotics, Vitamins, and Diet.

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the pilo-sebaceous unit, which mainly affects young adolescents. The pathogenesis is multifactorial, as a combination of genetic predisposition, hormonal production, hyper-seborrhea, inflammation and overgrowth of C. acnes. Moreover, diet-induced hyperinsulinemia can lead to sebocyte stimulation, androgen production, and thus acne lesions. Pharmacological therapeutic approaches are varied and include topical and systemic antibiotics and, in severe cases, systemic retinoids, with several side-effects. However, increasing evidence has shown that adequate vitami

Mobile Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Probiotics.

Even though people worldwide tend to consume probiotic products for their beneficial health effects on a daily basis, recently, concerns were outlined regarding the uptake and potential intestinal colonisation of the bacteria that they carry. These bacteria are capable of executing horizontal gene transfer (HGT) which facilitates the movement of various genes, including antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), among the donor and recipient bacterial populations. Within our study, 47 shotgun sequencing datasets deriving from various probiotic samples (isolated strains and metagenomes) were bioinf
