Dehydroepiandrosterone improves psychological well-being in male and female hypopituitary patients on maintenance growth hormone replacement.

CONTEXT: Patients with panhypopituitarism have impaired quality of life (QoL) despite GH replacement. They are profoundly androgen deficient, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has been shown to have a beneficial effect on well-being and mood in patients with adrenal failure and possibly in hypopituitarism. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the effect of DHEA administration on mood in hypopituitary adults on established GH replacement with a constant serum IGF-I. DESIGN: A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted over an initial 6 months followed by an open phase of 6 mont

Psychological resilience, metacognition, post-traumatic growth, and rumination among undergraduate nursing interns: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students, during their 9-12 month hospital internship in China, commonly experience rumination (repetitive negative thinking) in high-pressure clinical environments, which is closely associated with mental health problems. Previous researchers have suggested that psychological resilience, as a key protective factor, may alleviate this process. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, particularly regarding the roles of metacognition and post-traumatic growth (positive psychological change following adversity), which warrant further investigation. Pandemic-related posttraumatic psychological growth in U.S. military veterans: A 3-year, nationally representative, longitudinal study.

Little is known about the positive psychological changes or posttraumatic growth (PTG) in response to the pandemic as the COVID-19 vaccines has become widely available. This longitudinal study aimed to characterize changes in the prevalence of pandemic-related PTG, and to identify and quantify the relative importance of PTG correlates pre-pandemic, 1- year peri‑pandemic, and 2-years post-pandemic onset. A total of 2,441 U.S. military veterans completed Wave 3 assessment of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. In the full sample, a significant decrease from peri‑pandemic to 2-y

Repetitive thought dimensions, psychological well-being, and perceived growth in older adults: a multilevel, prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Forms of repetitive thought (RT) such as worry are clearly related to states such as anxiety and depression. However, the presence of other forms such as reminiscing suggests that RT could also relate to eudaimonic well-being (EWB). Furthermore, a largely overlooked characteristic, total tendency to engage in RT, may associate with a particular kind of EWB, namely, perceived growth (PG). DESIGN: Older adults (N=150) were interviewed semi-annually for up to 10 waves. METHODS: Participants completed a battery of RT measures at baseline and annual assessments of psych

Growth hormone replacement does not improve psychological well-being in adult hypopituitarism: a randomized crossover trial.

In order to examine the effect of growth hormone (GH) on psychological parameters in adult hypopituitarism, 20 adults were studied, mean age 47 years (range 20-69) with hypopituitarism and confirmed GH deficiency (GH < 3 micrograms/l following clonidine 0.15 mg/m2). Subjects were randomly allocated to either GH-up to 0.25 U/kg per week in daily doses) or placebo for 3 months before crossover to the opposite treatment arm. Psychological parameters were assessed by self-reported questionnaires (Disease Specific Questionnaire (DSQ), the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), and the Social Adjustment Sca

[Trajectories of childhood psychological trauma: Pathways from stressful events - to mental disorders, recovery, or post-traumatic growth].

This review synthesizes current perspectives on outcomes following childhood psychological trauma. When children are exposed to stressful events with similar objective parameters, they may follow distinct developmental trajectories, including resilience, post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or more severe personality disorders. Trauma is a dynamic process shaped by interactions among factors at three levels. The analysis addresses initial conditions of trauma exposure, including pre-traumatic factors such as attachment quality, neurobiological and genetic predispositio

Psychological distress in victims of intimate partner violence: the buffering effect of post-traumatic growth and metacognitive abilities.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health issue associated with severe psychological consequences, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and global psychopathology. Nevertheless, many survivors also experience positive psychological changes, defined as post-traumatic growth (PTG). The present study aimed to examine the associations between psychopathological symptoms, metacognitive abilities, and post-traumatic growth, and to test whether metacognitive abilities mediate the relationship between psychological distress and PTG in women survivors of IPV.

The psychological distress of parents is associated with reduced linear growth of children: Evidence from a nationwide population survey.

BACKGROUND: Stunting, an indicator of restricted linear growth, has become a primary measure of childhood undernutrition due to its persistent high prevalence globally, and importance for health and development. Although the etiology is recognized as complex, most analyses have focused on social and biomedical determinants, with limited attention on psychological factors affecting care and nurturing in the home. We assessed whether the psychological distress of parents is related to child linear growth and stunting, and documented the associated risk factors, and examined the relationship betw

Guilt, shame, and fear in relation to posttraumatic growth through psychological flexibility among adults reporting dating violence exposure.

Dating violence can be experienced as a form of relational trauma, yet comparatively little is known about whether guilt, shame, and fear show differentiated indirect associations with posttraumatic growth when global psychological flexibility is specified as an intervening construct among adults reporting dating violence exposure. This cross-sectional study tested a hypothesized structural equation model in 396 adults (M = 32.15, SD = 9.33) who responded affirmatively to a dichotomous screening item concerning prior dating violence. The item was used solely to determine eligibility, and datin

[Design and validation of the scales for the assessment of the psychological impact of past life events: the role of ruminative thought and personal growth].

INTRODUCTION: Older people's emotional distress is often related to rumination processes focused on past vital events occurred during their lives. The specific coping strategies displayed to face those events may contribute to explain older adults' current well-being: they can perceive that they have obtained personal growth after those events and/or they can show a tendency to have intrusive thoughts about those events. This paper describes the development and analysis of the psychometric properties of the Scales for the Assessment of the Psychological Impact of Past Life Events (SAPIPLE): th
