Bibliometric Analysis of Microtia-Related Publications From 2006 to 2020.

OBJECTIVE: Microtia is a congenital auricular malformation with a hypoplastic external ear that ranges in severity from a slightly smaller auricle to complete the absence of the auricle. The present study was conducted to identify and analyze the characteristics of microtia-related articles published from 2006 to 2020 by using bibliometric analyses. METHOD: Microtia-related studies published from 2006 to 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Keywords, first author, citations, date of publication, and publication journal were extracted and quantitatively analyze

Combat-related blast-induced neurotrauma: a public health problem?

The purpose of this article is to raise nurses' awareness of the significance and potential public health impact of combat-related blast-induced neurotrauma (BINT) in U.S. troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. A comprehensive review of the current literature on BINT was completed by the author, based primarily on combat-related blast exposure in the military population. She found that it is necessary to theorize about potential etiologies for mild traumatic brain injury in the military population since the literature suggests that neurological and psychological trauma resulting from mili

Assessing public opinion regarding potential ATV-related policies.

PROBLEM: States with laws regarding ATV use and safety have lower mortality and injury rates than states with few or no restrictions. Our objective was to assess the attitudes of registered Ohio voters concerning potential legislation regarding ATV use and safety to determine the feasibility of its enactment. METHOD: A statewide telephone survey of 838 registered Ohio voters was conducted and results were weighted by region to accurately represent all Ohio voters. RESULTS: Registered voters were in favor of restricting the use of ATVs by children <16 years (81%), prohibiting passengers on AT

Public health issues related to infection in pregnancy and cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is the most common neuromotor developmental disability of childhood, affecting as many as 8,000 to 12,000 children born in the U.S. each year (corresponding to a prevalence rate of between 2 and 3 per 1000 children). Recent improvements in neonatal care have not resulted in a decline in the overall prevalence of cerebral palsy and, in fact, greater numbers of very preterm/very low birth weight infants are surviving with cerebral palsy and other developmental problems. Infection in pregnancy may be an important cause of the disorder. In preterm infants, there appears to be about

A theoretical analysis of the relations between the risk of congenital toxoplasmosis and the annual infection rates with a convincing argument for better public intervention.

In a theoretical analysis of the present study, we quantitatively indicate a potential threat of congenital toxoplasmosis to Japanese young women by the use of a simple mathematical model or a special case of the well-known catalytic infection model. For introducing a risk function of congenital toxoplasmosis, an annual infection rate, r, was divided into r(1), the rate before age a(0 < a < 15), and r(2), the rate after age a. Presuming the values of r(1), r(2) and a on the basis of the current situation of Toxoplasma infection in Japan, simulation analyses were performed with the mathematical

Recommendations for collecting and analysing migration-related determinants in public health research.

BACKGROUND: According to the definition of the German Federal Statistical Office, about every fourth person living in Germany has a so-called migration background (MB), i.e., the person or at least one of their parents was born without German citizenship. However, MB has been defined differently in many studies. Also, the MB summarises people in different living situations, making differentiated analysis in health science more difficult. This article formulates recommendations for the collection and analysis of migration-related, as well as social and structural, determinants of health. INDIC

Public health impact of heat-related illness among migrant farmworkers.

BACKGROUND: Migrant farmworkers are at risk for heat-related illness (HRI) at work. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine which risk factors could potentially reduce the prevalence of HRI symptoms among migrant farmworkers in Georgia. METHODS: Trained interviewers conducted in-person interviews of adults who attended the South Georgia Farmworker Health Project clinics in June 2011. The analysis was conducted in 2011-2012. Population intervention models were used to assess where the greatest potential impact could be made to reduce the prevalence of HRI symptoms. RESULTS: In to

Comorbidities in Age-Related Cataract: Epidemiological Burden and Public Health Implications.

Cataracts represent the leading cause of blindness worldwide, particularly in older adults, and constitute a significant public health challenge. Although cataract surgery is generally associated with a high safety profile, both patients and healthcare providers often face significant challenges due to age-related physiological changes and the high prevalence of comorbidities, which are directly linked to cataractogenesis and other systemic diseases that can complicate both the surgical procedure and postoperative recovery. This narrative review aimed to assess the epidemiological characterist

Willingness of the UK public to volunteer for testing in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization declared the rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world to be a global public health emergency. The spread of the disease is influenced by people's willingness to adopt preventative public health behaviours, such as participation in testing programmes, and risk perception can be an important determinant of engagement in such behaviours. METHODS: In this study, we present the first assessment during the first wave of the pandemic and the early stages of the first UK lockdown in April & May 2020 of how the UK public (N = 778) perceived the usefulness of

[Selected work-related health problems in drivers of public transport vehicles].

The literature data and our own studies show that in drivers of public transport vehicles, largely intensified work-related risk factors for arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, duodenal and gastric ulcer diseases and back pain syndrome are found. These involves occupational risk factors as well as classic ones, such as obesity, limited physical activity or tobacco smoking. Among occupational risk factors, stress induced by the responsibility for assuring public safety in heavy urban traffic, time pressure and contacts with passengers predominate. Other burdens observed in this occup
