Our laboratory at the Johnson Space Center has employed the H-reflex recorded from the soleus muscle as a method of monosynaptic reflex testing in conjunction with vertical linear acceleration to assess modification of utriculo-saccular function induced through prolonged exposure to microgravity. It was hypothesized that exposure to free fall would reduce the necessity for postural reflexes in the major leg muscles, and that postural modification would reflect a change, not in the peripheral vestibular organs, but more centrally. This postural adjustment would reflect a sensory motor rearrange

The purpose of this study was to compare the discharge characteristics of motor units in the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle when it performed low-force isometric contractions in the directions of index finger abduction, flexion, or concurrent abduction + flexion (combined). Motor-unit activity was identified from high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) recordings obtained with grid electrodes attached to the skin over FDI while participants performed low-force isometric contractions at 10% of maximum in the three directions. A total of 378 motor units were identified across all

Fitting amplification to a patient with Ménière's disease (MD) can present several challenges to the dispensing audiologist. These challenges include the presence of fluctuating hearing loss, a rising audiometric configuration, unilateral or asymmetrical hearing loss, reduced dynamic range, and reduced word-recognition scores. The presence of any one of these characteristics could create obstacles for a successful hearing aid fit. The presence of most if not all of these characteristics in a single patient can readily challenge the skills of even the most experienced dispensing audiologist. In

In addition to local biomechanical and reflex factors influencing muscle activation, global factors may be used by the nervous system to control all muscles in a coherent and task-specific way. It has been hypothesized that a virtual or referent (R) configuration of the body determined by muscle recruitment thresholds specified by neural control levels is such a factor. Due to the threshold nature of the R configuration, the activity of each muscle depends on the difference between the actual (Q) and the R configuration of the body. The nervous system modifies the R configuration to produce mo

Studies in humans have not assessed motor unit firing rates (MUFRs) recorded from intramuscular electromyography (EMG) during a rhythmic locomotor output. Using arm cycling as a model of locomotor-generated activity, the purpose was to determine whether MUFRs differed during arm cycling compared with intensity-matched isometric contractions. We hypothesized that MUFRs would be greater during arm cycling than isometric contractions, assessed at various working intensities. Young males (n = 10) and females (n = 4) completed arm cycling bouts and isometric contractions of the elbow flexors. Indwe

The purpose of our study was to compare motor unit modes derived from high-density surface electromyogram recordings from proximal and distal regions of the tibialis anterior muscle during submaximal isometric contractions. Motor unit activity was recorded with two grid electrodes attached to the skin over the muscle while participants performed isometric contractions to five targets that ranged from 5 to 60% of maximal torque. Factor analysis of the smoothed discharge rates yielded two distinct motor unit modes-defined as subsets of motor units in which the modulation of discharge rate was co

PURPOSE: The rate of torque development (RTD) is temperature dependent, but the temperature effects on motor unit behavior during rapid contractions remain largely unknown. This study aimed to clarify the influence of local limb temperature on motor unit behavior and RTD during rapid contractions in humans.
METHODS: Ten healthy male participants rested in a sitting position while immersing their right lower leg in water at different temperatures (Hot: ~43 °C, Neutral: ~33 °C, and Cold: ~10 °C) for 20 min each. The participants then completed a series of voluntary isometric contractions of dor

Objective.Effective characterization of neural complexity during motor execution tasks enhances understanding of maladaptive cortical reorganization in stroke and inform targeted rehabilitation. While traditional EEG analyses often do not consider nonlinear temporal dynamics, we introduce a recurrence based computational framework to quantify cortical complexity during hierarchical motor tasks. Here, we evaluate contralesional motor system engagement in stroke survivors using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), ensuring sensitivity to nonlinear and temporally structured cortical activity

INTRODUCTION: This study proposes guidelines for motor unit number index (MUNIX) recording and analysis.
METHODS: MUNIX was measured in control participants and in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Changes in MUNIX values due to E1 electrode position, number of surface electromyography interference pattern (SIP) epochs, SIP epoch duration, force of contraction, and outlier data points were investigated.
RESULTS: MUNIX depends on optimized compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude. Individual muscles showed variations when the number of epochs was low or when the SIP durati

Laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) is clinically valuable in the evaluation of laryngeal dysfunction and vocal fold immobility. To facilitate clinical application of this electrophysiologic test, a detailed description of modified LEMG techniques is presented. The techniques were applied for simultaneous bilateral recordings of the thyroarytenoid, cricothyroid, and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles. The basic patterns of LEMG are classified into three different types: normal, neuropathy, and myopathy. In an attempt to characterize these patterns, we have reported eight LEMG-documented cases: uni

Manual analysis of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) was performed in 33 patients with polymyositis of whom 16 were studied in the acute stage and 17 in the chronic stage. Contrary to common description of "myopathic potentials" as being of low amplitude, short duration, and polyphasic shape, the quantitated study revealed no difference as to amplitude of short duration MUAPs in patients and normal subjects though short-duration MUAP and short duration polyphasic potentials were 4 and 3 times, respectively, more common in patients than in controls. Although the mean duration of MUAPs usuall

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the spatiotemporal structure of EMG-derived synergies during balance perturbations to gain insight into deficient postural control in Parkinson's Disease (PD). We also examined the utility of muscle activation pattern analysis for predicting the result of postural responses.
METHODS: 20 PD patients and 21 age-matched controls were subjected to repeated pull-test trials and a gait task. Kinematics and neuromuscular synergies were extracted from accelerometer- and surface-EMG-data. Pull-test trials were automatically classified based on their outcome (self-recovered a

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of vibration on motor unit (MU) firing behavior and physical performance of antagonist muscles in healthy young adult males.
METHODS: Fourteen males (age = 24.3 ± 3.6 years) were included in this study. There were two conditions, one in which participants received 80 Hz vibration in the distal tendon of the hamstring for 30 s and the control condition (no vibration). High-density surface electromyography (HD-SEMG) signals and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of knee extensor muscles were evaluated before and after the respective cond

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Anatomic representation suggests that a median sensory nerve conduction study recording the thumb (median D1 NCS) may effectively assess upper neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP). We sought to determine the feasibility of technique, establish reference data, and assess its ability to: (a) identify focal upper plexus lesions; and (b) identify C6 root avulsion. In a secondary analysis, we explored the association between absence/presence of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) during needle electromyography (EMG) of the deltoid and biceps brachii muscles and C6 avulsion stat

OBJECTIVE: There is still insufficient knowledge about natural history in adult spinal muscular atrophy, thus valid markers for treatment and disease monitoring are urgently needed.
METHODS: We studied hand muscle innervation pattern of 38 adult genetically confirmed 5q spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients by the motor unit number index (MUNIX) method. Data were compared to healthy controls and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and systematically correlated to typical disease-relevant scores and other clinical as well as demographic characteristics.
RESULTS: Denervation of hand

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral nerve has the capacity to regenerate after nerve lesions; during reinnervation of muscle motor units are gradually reestablished. The aim of this study was to follow the time course of reestablishing and remodeling of motor units in relation to recovery of force after different types of nerve repair.
METHODS: Reinnervation of muscle was compared clinically and electrophysiologically in complete median or ulnar nerve lesions with short gap lengths in the distal forearm repaired with a collagen nerve conduit (11 nerves) or nerve suture (10 nerves). Reestablishment of motor

Phrenic motor neurons are recruited across a range of motor behaviors to generate varying levels of diaphragm muscle (DIAm) force. We hypothesized that DIAm motor units are recruited in a fixed order across a range of motor behaviors of varying force levels, consistent with the Henneman Size Principle. Single motor unit action potentials and compound DIAm EMG activities were recorded in anesthetized, neurally intact rats across different motor behaviors, i.e., eupnea, hypoxia-hypercapnia (10% O2 and 5% CO2), deep breaths, sustained airway occlusion, and sneezing. Non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy (NIAT) induces morpho-mechanical changes to the Achilles tendon (AT). Evidence on how triceps surae motor unit firing properties are influenced by altered tendon mechanics in NIAT is limited. This study investigated motor unit firing properties (mean discharge rate (DR), recruitment and de-recruitment thresholds, and discharge rate variability (COVisi)), motor unit firing-torque relationships (cross-correlation coefficient between cumulative spike train (CST) and torque, and neuromechanical delay (NMD)) and neural drive distribution (connectivity strength
