Racial/ethnic residential segregation, neighborhood poverty and urinary biomarkers of diet in New York City adults.

Consuming less sodium and more potassium are components of a healthy diet and reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Racial/ethnic segregation and poverty are both associated with dietary habits, but data linking dietary intake to neighborhood characteristics are limited, particularly in Hispanic and Asian American ethnic enclaves. This study presents relationships between neighborhood-level segregation, poverty and biologic indicators of sodium and potassium consumption. Data were from the 2010 Heart Follow-Up Study, a cross-sectional health survey, which included 24-h urine collections and sel

Zip code-level risk factors for tuberculosis: neighborhood environment and residential segregation in New Jersey, 1985-1992.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined zip code-level risk factors associated with very high tuberculosis (TB) rates among non-Hispanic Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians in New Jersey (1985-1992). METHODS: Exposure indices (poverty, crowded housing, and dilapidated housing) and segregation indices (contact with immigrants, isolation, and density) were used to characterize zip codes. A Boolean-logic methodology was used to determine which configurations of risk factors significantly distinguish zip codes where TB rates are very high from other zip codes. RESULTS: For Whites and Asians

Race/ethnicity, residential segregation, and exposure to ambient air pollution: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

OBJECTIVES: We described the associations of ambient air pollution exposure with race/ethnicity and racial residential segregation. METHODS: We studied 5921 White, Black, Hispanic, and Chinese adults across 6 US cities between 2000 and 2002. Household-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) were estimated for 2000. Neighborhood racial composition and residential segregation were estimated using US census tract data for 2000. RESULTS: Participants in neighborhoods with more than 60% Hispanic populations were exposed to 8% higher PM2.5 and 31% higher NOX concentrations

Neighborhood-Level Racial and Ethnic Residential Segregation and Incidence of Atrial Fibrillation: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, affecting up to 6 million in the United States, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite higher rates of AF clinical and social risk factors, underrepresented racial and ethnic group individuals have lower AF incidence. Structural factors, such as neighborhood-level racial and ethnic residential segregation, have been associated with incident cardiometabolic disease, particularly among underrepresented individuals. However, as data on segregation and incident AF are sparse our objective was to examin

Racial Residential Segregation in Young Adulthood and Brain Integrity in Middle Age: Can We Learn From Small Samples?

Racial residential segregation is associated with multiple adverse health outcomes in Black individuals. Yet, the influence of structural racism and racial residential segregation on brain aging is less understood. In this study, we investigated the association between cumulative exposure to racial residential segregation over 25 years (1985-2010) in young adulthood, as measured by the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, and year 25 measures of brain volume (cerebral, gray matter, white matter, and hippocampal volumes) in midlife. We studied 290 Black participants with available brain imaging data who we

Racial Residential Segregation and Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy Among Women in Chicago: Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.

BACKGROUND: Racial residential segregation is associated with higher rates of chronic hypertension, as well as greater risk of preterm birth and low birthweight. However, few studies have examined associations between segregation and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP). METHODS: Electronic health records from 4,748 singleton births among non-Hispanic black women at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago, IL (2009-2013) were geocoded to the census tract level. Residential segregation was measured using the Gi* statistic, a z-score measuring the extent to which each individual's neighborhood

COVID-19's effect on healthcare disparities: delivery, reimbursement, and premature mortality in residentially segregated populations.

INTRODUCTION: Spatially segregated, socio-economically deprived communities often face significant health disparities. This paper evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare delivery and reimbursement disparities in Hungary, particularly focusing on segregated populations. AIMS: To examine healthcare utilization and reimbursement patterns among patients in segregated areas (SA) and non-segregated or complementary areas (CA) during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to pre-pandemic levels, and to understand how these patterns influenced overall health outcomes. METHODS: A cr

Racial residential segregation and receipt of breast cancer screening in the United States: a national cross-sectional study, 2020.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among the U.S. women, with a lifetime risk that exceeds 13%. In 2026, it is projected that approximately 321,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. While there are many well-known barriers to breast cancer screening, the effect of residential segregation on access to screening services is not fully understood. DESIGN: This study utilized data from the 2020 U.S. Health Information National Trends Survey Data Linkage Project (HDLP2020) for 1329 women aged 40-75 years. Fitting generalized linear models with the maximum likel

Residential racial segregation and mortality among black, white, and Hispanic urban breast cancer patients in Texas, 1995 to 2009.

BACKGROUND: The authors investigated whether residential segregation (the degree to which racial/ethnic groups live separately from one another in a geographic area) 1) was associated with mortality among urban women with breast cancer, 2) explained racial/ethnic disparities in mortality, and 3) whether its association with mortality varied by race/ethnicity. METHODS: Using Texas Cancer Registry data, all-cause mortality and breast-cancer mortality were examined among 109,749 urban black, Hispanic, and white women aged ≥50 years who were diagnosed with breast cancer from 1995 to 2009. Relationship of Racial Residential Segregation to Newly Diagnosed Cases of HIV among Black Heterosexuals in US Metropolitan Areas, 2008-2015.

Social science and public health literature has framed residential segregation as a potent structural determinant of the higher HIV burden among black heterosexuals, but empirical evidence has been limited. The purpose of this study is to test, for the first time, the association between racial segregation and newly diagnosed heterosexually acquired HIV cases among black adults and adolescents in 95 large US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in 2008-2015. We operationalized racial segregation (the main exposure) using Massey and Denton's isolation index for black residents; the outcome was

Examining the Relationship Between Racial, Ethnic, and Economic Residential Segregation and Cigarette Smoking Among a Nationally Representative Sample of Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Predominantly Black, Hispanic or Latino, and lower-income communities are overexposed to tobacco. This study investigated the relationship between cigarette smoking and racial/ethnic and economic segregation using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE). AIMS AND METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 4091 (aged 18-34 years) was surveyed between September and October 2016. We calculated census-tract population estimates to form ICE measures for ethnicity, race, income, ethnicity and income, and race and income. Quintiles were determined, with Quintile 1 (Q1) rep

Association Between Changes in Racial Residential and School Segregation and Trends in Racial Health Disparities, 2000-2020: A Life Course Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Most studies of the relationship between racial segregation and racial health disparities have focused on residential segregation. School-based racial segregation is an additional form of segregation that may be associated with racial disparities in health. This study examines the relationship between both residential segregation and school segregation and racial health disparities among non-Hispanic Black compared to non-Hispanic White persons at the county level in the United States. It also examines the relationship between changes in residential and school segregation and sub

Associations Between Racial Residential Segregation and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy among Black women: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

INTRODUCTION: Black women are at greater risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Racial residential segregation (RRS) drives racial health disparities. This study investigates the association between RRS and the onset of HDP among Black parous women in the U.S. METHODS: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study is a cohort of Black and White adults aged 18-30 from four U.S. cities, recruited in 1985 and followed for over 30 years. RRS was measured using the local Getis-Ord Gi∗ statistic, categorizing neighborhoods as high (Gi∗ >1.96), medium (Gi∗ 0-1.96), or low (G

Perception of Western governments' hostility to Islam among European Muslims before and after ISIS: the important roles of residential segregation and education.

Perception of Western governments' hostility to Islam is one of the indicating features of Islamic fundamentalism and, in some cases, is serving as a pull to join extremist groups. In this paper, using data from two waves of a cross-national survey, we investigate what affects European Muslims' opinions about Western governments. We find that residential segregation is associated with perceived hostility of Western governments to Islam. Further, we find that Muslims living in segregated neighbourhoods and enclaves have a higher probability of believing that Western governments are hostile to I

Exposure to Neighborhood-Level Racial Residential Segregation in Young Adulthood to Midlife and Incident Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Black Adults: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood-level racial residential segregation has been linked to several cardiovascular disease risk factors and outcomes in Black adults, but its impact on subclinical atherosclerosis remains unknown. In addition, although the impact of segregation on health may vary over the life course, most studies have examined segregation exposure at a single point in time. This article takes a life course approach by examining associations of exposure to neighborhood-level racial residential segregation in young adulthood and patterns of exposure from young adulthood to midlife with coro

Moderation effect of community health on the relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and HIV viral suppression in South Carolina: A county-level longitudinal study from 2013 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Viral suppression is the ultimate goal of the HIV treatment cascade and a primary endpoint of antiretroviral therapy. Empirical evidence found racial/ethnic disparities in viral suppression among people living with HIV (PWH), but the evidence of the relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and place-based viral suppression is scarce. Further exploring potential structural moderators in this relationship has substantial implications for healthcare policymaking and resource allocation. The current study aimed to investigate the spatial-temporal disparities in the HI

Multiple drivers and long-term patterns of the ecology of segregation in Latin America.

Segregation is a multidimensional phenomenon deeply entwined with historical, social, and ecological contexts. The ecology of segregation framework explores how social norms institutionalize racism, classism, and power dynamics to drive inequitable patterns of environmental benefits and hazards. The ecology of segregation has thus far been applied in the Global North, yet is relevant but not as well studied in the Global South and specifically Latin America. More work is needed to consider how the framework can be applied in other historic, sociocultural, and governance contexts. This paper ap
