Cystic ectasia of the rete testis: clinical and radiographic features.

PURPOSE: Cystic ectasia of the rete testis is a rare condition that may be incidentally noted on scrotal ultrasonography. This benign condition has a typical appearance of a collection of small anechoic structures in the confluence of the mediastinum testis. The main significance of this condition is that it must be differentiated from testicular neoplasm. We reviewed the experience with this condition at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to identify all sonograms showing ectatic rete testis performed from 1998 through February 2002. A departmental d

Carcinoma of the rete testis: case report and review of the literature.

The literature suggests that carcinoma of the rete testis is a rare neoplasm of unknown etiology that arises in the mediastinum testis and may grow slowly for months before clinical detection. Diagnosis is often confounded by symptoms suggesting inflammation in middle aged and older men presenting with diffuse enlargement rather than discrete testicular nodules. Pathological features are those of an adenocarcinoma but are not sufficiently distinctive to identify the rete testis as the site of origin. Many patients die of the disease soon after diagnosis despite local resection with or without

Primary clear cell carcinoma of the rete testis: 1st report.

Primary tumours of the rete testis, either benign or malignant, are very rare. Such lesions require careful scrutiny including immunohistochemical analysis to exclude malignant lesions such as mesothelioma or papillary serous carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of a primary clear cell carcinoma of the rete testis. The possibility of a primary renal cell carcinoma or other primary site with metastatic spread to rete testis was excluded by thorough clinical and radiological work-up.

Cystic Dysplasia of the Rete Testis: Does Pathophysiology Guide Management?

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis (CDT) is a rare, benign, cause of testicular mass in the pediatric population. The mass appears on sonography as multiple small cysts of varying size surrounded by normal or compressed testicular tissue. CDT is often associated with other genitourinary anomalies, commonly presenting with agenesis or dysplasia of the ipsilateral kidney. The pathophysiology and the management remains controversial. We report a case of a 3-year-old presenting with an enlarged testicular mass later presumed to be CDT associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis, review the literat

Thyroid Hormone Regulates Postnatal Development of the Rete Testis in Mice.

Thyroid hormone regulates the rate of testis maturation in mammals. Manipulations of thyroid hormone levels in neonatal animals affect various aspects of testis biology. However, there have been no studies examining the effects of thyroid hormone on the rete testis (RT). Here, we used animal models of neonatal hyperthyroidism (injections of triiodothyronine, or T3) and hypothyroidism (goitrogen 6-propyl-2-thiouracil [PTU] treatment) and found that higher levels of thyroid hormone accelerate RT development, while lower levels of thyroid hormone delay it. T3 and PTU treatments influence RT size,

Tubular ectasia of the rete testis: A benign yet unrecognized condition.

Tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT) presents as multiple cystic structures within the rete testis, often incidentally detected on ultrasound as echo-free intratesticular cystic lesions. Despite its benign nature, assessing testicular cystic lesions can sometimes be challenging. The primary importance of identifying this uncommon condition lies in its distinction from cystic testicular malignancies and thus avoiding further radical procedures. We report an instance of TERT within the right testis discovered incidentally in a patient with a medical background of epididymitis, presenting fo

Cystadenoma of the Rete Testis in a Patient With von Hippel-Lindau Disease.

von Hippel-Lindau disease is a rare, inherited multicystic disorder that is characterized by several benign and malignant neoplasms (Odrzywolski, 2010). Classically, the disease manifests itself in a broad spectrum, including renal cell carcinomas, intracranial and spinal hemangioblastomas, endolymphatic sac tumors, renal and pancreatic cysts, and pheochromocytomas. Another important, but commonly forgotten manifestation is the cystadenoma of the rete testis.

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis: Not a true hyperplasia, just proliferation!

There are several tumor-like lesions and miscellaneous neoplasms of the rete testis. We present a case with adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis (AHRT). The patient was 24 years old with undescended testis and was referred to our hospital. There were no clinical or endocrine abnormalities. Cryptorchidism was unilateral and the other testis was normal. Right orchiectomy was performed and sent to the pathology laboratory for examination. Morphologic and immunohistochemistry findings confirmed the diagnosis of AHRT in this case. The patient's postoperative course continues uneventfully. AHR

A case of adenocarcinoma of the rete testis accompanied by focal adenomatous hyperplasia.

Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is very rare. There is still little knowledge about its etiology and pathogenesis. Herein, we present a case of rete testis adenocarcinoma in a 36-year-old Chinese male. The tumor was predominantly composed of irregular small tubules and papillary structures with cuboidal or polygonal cells. In peripheral area of the tumor, the remaining normal rete testis and adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis could also be seen, indicating the possible relationship between adenomatous hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma. In addition, the patient underwent a left hydrocele

Tubular ectasia of the rete testis associated with azoospermia: a case report.

Tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT) is a rare benign condition of the testis due to dilatation of the tubules of the rete testis. It must be differentiated from neoplastic disease of the testis clinically by patient's age, mode of presentation, tumour marker status and characteristic ultrasound and colour Doppler findings. Awareness and diagnosis of TERT should prevent unnecessary surgical intervention such as orchidectomy or biopsy. We report a case of severe bilateral tubular ectasia of the rete testis associated with azoospermia and review the relevant literature. This association has

Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis with preceding diagnosis of pulmonary metastases.

We report a case of primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis in a 55-year-old man with pulmonary metastases that were detected 11 months prior to the diagnosis of the primary lesion. Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is an extremely rare malignant tumor with a poor outcome. The most common primary symptom is a scrotal mass, often accompanied by hydrocele and chronic epididymitis. The diagnosis is often delayed because of non-specific clinical presentation and symptoms. We cannot forget that rete testis is a possible primary site for a primary, unknown metastatic adenocarcinoma.

[Tubular ectasia of the rete testis: ultrasonography findings in 19 patients].

OBJECTIVE: The sonographic findings and associated etiological conditions in 19 patients with tubular ectasia of the rete testis are described. METHODS: 19 patients with tubular ectasia of the rete testis diagnosed by ultrasound over a two-year period are presented. Twenty-seven testes showed ectasia. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 59 years. US evaluation was performed with the 7-8 MHz multifrequency linear probe (Acuson 128, Mountain View, CA, USA). The patients were evaluated in the supine position and the scrotal content was examined in the sagittal and transverse planes. A colo

[Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis and ipsilateral kidney agenesis in children].

BACKGROUND: Cystic dysplasia of rete testis, a rare abnormality, is often associated with renal agenesis. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old boy was examined because he presented large scrotum. This was initially considered as hydrocele. Surgery showed a cystic dysplasia of the testis that in this patient was associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis. CONCLUSION: This congenital abnormality, explained on the basis of embryological development, has been reported in 15 children. The testis appears cystic at surgical exploration; echography can affirm diagnosis and MRI can give specific features. A con

[ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE RETE TESTIS WITH METASTASIS OF THE PENILE AND LUNG: A CASE REPORT].

Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is a rare malignant tumor with poor prognosis. We report a case of adenocarcinoma of the rete testis. A 55-year-old man became aware of discomfort in the right scrotum. Negative results were obtained for the serum markers AFP, β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG), and LDH. Computed tomography (CT) showed enhancement of the right testis. Radical orchiectomy was performed. Immunohistochemical examination of the resected specimen showed positive results for CEA, and adenocarcinoma of the rete testis was diagnosed. Serum CEA level was elevated. CT showed swellin

Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis: A case report and review of the literature.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is an extremely rare extratesticular neoplasm. Due to its low occurrence and the scarcity of data, sonographic characteristics of adenocarcinoma of the rete testis are still poorly defined. A 46-year-old male complained of swelling and pain in the right side of the scrotum. No associated symptoms were observed. Anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy yielded no response. Postoperative pathology revealed a diagnosis of poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rete testis. Using the ultrasonography features observed, combined with a review of current literatur

Ultrasonography of tubular ectasia of the rete testis with associated scrotal findings.

PURPOSE: Tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT) is a rare disorder that can be seen on ultrasonography (US) during a routine examination. In this study, we aim to discuss 15 cases of TERT and concomitant scrotal pathologies. METHODS: A total of 405 patients who were admitted to our department between March 2009 and December 2011 for scrotal US with different complaints such as scrotal pain, palpable mass, infertility, varicocele, or hydrocele were evaluated. Presence or absence of TERT and associated scrotal anomalies if TERT was present were considered on gray-scale US and color Doppler U

A deficiency of lunatic fringe is associated with cystic dilation of the rete testis.

Lunatic fringe belongs to a family of beta1-3 N-acetyltransferases that modulate the affinity of the Notch receptors for their ligands through the elongation of O-fucose moieties on their extracellular domain. A role for Notch signaling in vertebrate fertility has been predicted by the intricate expression of the Notch receptors and their ligands in the oocyte and granulosa cells of the ovary and the spermatozoa and Sertoli cells of the testis. It has been demonstrated that disruption of Notch signaling by inactivation of lunatic fringe led to infertility associated with pleiotropic defects in

Primary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis: diagnostic problems and therapeutic dilemmas.

We describe a rare case of a malignant tumour of the rete testis which was diagnosed incidentally during scrotal surgery for an apparently benign left hydrocele. Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is a malignancy with a poor prognosis. The beneficial role of prophylactic retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy is controversial due to the extremely low number of reported cases and the occasional description of primary lymphatic spread outside the retroperitoneal space.

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis associated to cryptorchidism: a case report.

A case of cystic dysplasia of the rete testis (CDRT) is reported. Nine months after right orchidopexy, a 10-year-old boy presented a palpable mass in the ipsilateral hemi-scrotum. Preoperative ultrasound showed a cystic lesion involving almost the whole testis. Radical orchidectomy was performed and at gross examination a hilar multiloculated cystic lesion was confirmed; microscopic examination showed cystic spaces lined by benign appearing monostratified epithelium with atrophy of the surrounding testicular parenchyma. These findings were consistent with the diagnosis of cystic dysplasia of t
