Chemical constituents of Rhododendron formosanum show pronounced growth inhibitory effect on non-small-cell lung carcinoma cells.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether Rhododendron formosanum Hemsl. (Ericaceae), an endemic species in Taiwan, exhibits antineoplastic potential against non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). R. formosanum was successively extracted with methanol and then separated into dichloromethane (RFL-DCM), ethyl acetate (RFL-EA), n-butanol (RFL-BuOH), and water (RFL-H2O) fractions. Among these extracts, RFL-EA exhibited the most effective antineoplastic effect. This study also demonstrated that fractions 2 and 3 from the RFL-EA extract (RFL-EA-2, RFL-EA-3) possessed the strongest anti

First Report of Calonectria Leaf Spot Caused by Calonectria colhounii (Anamorph Cylindrocladium colhounii) on Rhododendron in Belgium.

Belgium is one of the most important Rhododendron-producing areas in Europe, with an annual sale of approximately 1.6 million plants. In June 2010, an outbreak of leaf spots on several thousands of Rhododendron cv. Marcel Menard plants took place at a nursery near Gent. Diseased plants showed dark brown leaf spots that enlarged and finally resulted in leaf drop. Symptoms developed most explicitly on this cultivar, especially after standard repotting during May or June and when repotting was followed by a few days of unusually warm temperatures (30 to 35°C). The leading edge of diseased leaf ti

Rhododendron mariae Hance protects against dengue virus infection by targeting viral entry and modulating host-pathogen interactions.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection continues to pose a significant global public health threat, driven by complex host-pathogen dynamics and the absence of specific therapeutics. Rhododendron mariae Hance, a traditional medicinal herb from the Lingnan region of China, is historically recognized for its "warm nature" and "pungent taste," attributes traditionally linked to restoring host homeostasis and eliminating pathogens. Its potential to modulate host defenses against viral infections, however, remains largely unexplored. This study evaluated the polypharmacological anti-DENV properties of the e

Adaptive Traits and Molecular Mechanisms of Rhododendron Species in Changbai Mountains' Alpine Tundra: A Phenotype-Transcriptome Study.

Alpine tundra's harsh conditions challenge plants, but Rhododendron's adaptive mechanisms remain unclear. This study explored phenotypic/transcriptomic adaptations of three Rhododendron species (R. aureum, R. lapponicum, R. redowskianum) in Changbai Mountains' tundra vs. timberline. Mature leaves were sampled for leaf length and leaf width measurement and RNA-seq. Results showed leaf width (not leaf length uniformly) reduced in tundra across all species. RNA-seq identified 2399-5716 DEGs per species; plant dwarfism DEGs (e.g., DELLA, EDS1) were up-regulated. Shared DEGs were enriched in carbon

Antioxidant and Antimutagenic Activities of Different Fractions from the Leaves of Rhododendron arboreum Sm. and Their GC-MS Profiling.

In this era of urbanization and environmental pollution, antioxidants and antimutagens derived from plants are promising safeguards for human health. In the current investigation, we analyzed the antioxidant and antimutagenic effects of the hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate fractions of Rhododendron arboreum Sm. leaves and determined their chemical composition. The different fractions inhibited lipid peroxidation, repressed the production of nitric oxide radicals, and prevented deoxyribose degradation. The antimutagenic activity of the leaf fractions was analyzed against 4-nitro-O-phenylen

Cell size has pervasive effects on the functional composition and morphology of leaves: a case study in Rhododendron (Ericaceae).

The leaf economics spectrum (LES) characterizes a tradeoff between building a leaf for durability versus for energy capture and gas exchange, with allocation to leaf dry mass per projected surface area (LMA) being a key trait underlying this tradeoff. However, regardless of the biomass supporting the leaf, high rates of gas exchange are typically accomplished by small, densely packed stomata on the leaf surface, which is enabled by smaller genome sizes. Here, we investigate how variation in genome size-cell size allometry interacts with variation in biomass allocation (i.e. LMA) to influence t

Integrated Physiological, Transcriptomic, and Proteomic Analyses Reveal Alkali Stress Response and Tolerance Mechanisms of Rhododendron obtusum 'Fenzhuanglou' Seedlings.

Soil alkalization limits the cultivation of Rhododendron, an acidophilic ornamental genus, yet the alkali tolerance threshold of R. obtusum 'Fenzhuanglou' remains undefined. Seedlings were exposed for 40 d to mixed alkali (NaHCO3:Na2CO3 = 9:1; 0, 50, 60, and 70 mmol·L-1), combining physiological assays with RNA-seq and DIA proteomics of control and 60 mmol·L-1 leaves. The 50 mmol·L-1 treatment caused no visible injury, 60 mmol·L-1 defined the visible-injury threshold, and 70 mmol·L-1 caused severe, progressive damage. Chlorophyll b fell to about 20% of the control by 40 d under 60-70 mmol·L-1;

Exogenous ABA enhances cold tolerance of Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense under subzero temperature: integrating physiology, transcriptome, and proteome.

Low temperature limits the growth and ornamental value of evergreen shrubs. Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense, an important ornamental shrub from Northeast China, frequently suffers freezing damage during winter. While exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) enhances cold tolerance in many plants, its molecular mechanisms at subzero temperatures remain poorly understood in non-model species lacking chromosome-level reference genomes. This study investigated the effects of exogenous ABA on freezing tolerance in R. yedoense var. poukhanense at -4 °C using an integrated physiological, transcriptomic,

The Molecular Mechanism Regulating Flavonoid Production in Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. Against UV-B Damage Is Mediated by RcTRP5.

Elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are caused by ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B) stress. In response, plants strengthen their cell membranes, impeding photosynthesis. Additionally, UV-B stress initiates oxidative stress within the antioxidant defense system and alters secondary metabolism, particularly by increasing the quantity of UV-absorbing compounds such as flavonoids. The v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) transcription factor (TF) may participate in a plant's response to UV-B damage through its regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis. In this study, we dis
