Hypertonic saline solution-hetastarch for fluid resuscitation in experimental septic shock.

Hypertonic colloid solutions have been found efficacious in the resuscitation from hemorrhagic/traumatic shock. The present study investigated the hemodynamic, gasometric, and metabolic effects of hypertonic colloids in endotoxic shock in the dog. Thirty minutes after administration of 3 mg/kg normal body weight of Escherichia coli endotoxin, dogs were randomly assigned to receive 10 mL/kg hydroxyethylstarch (HES) either in 0.9% NaCl (HES, 10 dogs) or in 7.5% NaCl (HT-HES, 10 dogs) in 30 min. Thereafter, 0.9% NaCl solution was administered in volumes adequate to maintain pulmonary artery ballo

Effect of Saline versus Gluconate/Acetate-Buffered Solution versus Lactate-Buffered Solution on Serum Chloride Among Children.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous (IV) fluid administration is routine in pediatric care, but fluid composition can significantly influence serum electrolyte levels. Hyperchloremia, often associated with 0.9% saline, may lead to metabolic acidosis and renal dysfunction. Balanced solutions, including gluconate/acetate-buffered and lactate-buffered fluids, are being explored for safer alternatives. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of saline, gluconate/acetate-buffered, and lactate-buffered IV fluids on serum chloride levels in hospitalized children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational st

Comparison of the Effect of Heparinized Normal Saline Solution Versus Saline Solutions in Arterial and Central Venous Catheters on Complete Blood Count After Cardiac Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Heparinized and saline solutions can prevent clot formation in arterial and central venous catheters. However, heparin can decrease the platelet count and induce thrombocytopenia. Patients undergoing cardiac surgeries are more likely to develop heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effect of heparinized and saline solutions of arterial and central venous catheters on complete blood count (CBC) after cardiac surgery. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 100 participants. All subjects underwent cardiac surgery at Raj

Sterile water or saline solution for inflating the balloon of pediatric catheters.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterization is a standard clinical procedure, but pediatric data on balloon-related complications remain scarce. Balloon failure during removal may be associated with the type of inflation media and the size of the catheter lumen. Adult findings may not apply to pediatric catheters due to structural differences. OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of sterile water and 0.9 % saline solution as inflation media in pediatric Foley catheters and evaluate balloon deflation and crystalline deposits under controlled in vitro conditions. METHODS: Foley catheters (8Fr, 10Fr,

Phenol Dilution With Saline Solution Versus Alcohol in Partial Matricectomy for Onychocryptosis.

BACKGROUND: Onychocryptosis significantly impacts quality of life. Chemical partial matricectomy with phenol is a common surgical treatment. The use of alcohol as a solvent during this procedure has been controversial. In vitro studies suggest that physiologic saline solution (PSS) may be a more effective solvent for phenol. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vivo efficacy of PSS as a phenol solvent, in terms of postoperative outcomes, compared to alcohol. METHODS: A retrospective unicentric cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent partial chemical matricectomy with phenol for onychoc

Reversal of severe tricyclic antidepressant-induced cardiotoxicity with intravenous hypertonic saline solution.

A 29-year-old woman ingested 8 g of nortriptyline and presented to the emergency department with coma, hypotension, and widened QRS interval. After intubation, gastric lavage, hyperventilation, and therapy with intravenous normal saline solution, sodium bicarbonate boluses (rapid intravenous push), and high doses of norepinephrine and dopamine, she transiently improved, only to deteriorate on arrival to the ICU. Because her arterial pH was alkalemic at 7.5 at this point, she was given additional sodium in the form of 200 mL of 7.5% NaCl by means of rapid intravenous infusion (intravenous push)

Lactated Ringer vs Normal Saline Solution During Sickle Cell Vaso-Occlusive Episodes.

IMPORTANCE: Sickle cell disease (SCD), a clinically heterogenous genetic hemoglobinopathy, is characterized by painful vaso-occlusive episodes (VOEs) that can require hospitalization. Patients admitted with VOEs are often initially resuscitated with normal saline (NS) to improve concurrent hypovolemia, despite preclinical evidence that NS may promote erythrocyte sickling. The comparative effectiveness of alternative volume-expanding fluids (eg, lactated Ringer [LR]) for resuscitation during VOEs is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of LR to NS fluid resuscitation in patients wi

Antibiofilm effect of ozonized physiological saline solution on peri-implant-related biofilm.

BACKGROUND: Removal of dental plaque and local application of local chemical adjuncts, such as chlorhexidine (CHX), have been used to control and treat peri-implant disease. However, these methods can damage the surface properties of the implants or promote bacterial resistance. The application of ozone as an adjunctive treatment represents a new approach in the management of peri-implantitis. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of ozonized physiological saline solution in different concentrations against oral biofilms developed on titanium surface. Sterile water versus isotonic saline solution as irrigation fluid in percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the safety of sterile water as an irrigation solution for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients with kidney calculi were enrolled in this study and randomly divided into two groups for PCNL. Approaches to the calculi were through a single subcostal access with an Amplatz sheath, and either sterile water or isotonic saline solution was used as the irrigation fluid. Serum hemoglobin, haptoglobin, sodium, potassium, and creatinine were measured before and 12 hours after the procedure. The patients were evaluated for signs of tr

Time to reconsider saline as the ideal rinsing solution during abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal mesothelial cells lining the peritoneal cavity play a primary role in prevention of formation of peritoneal adhesions, which depends mainly on their fibrinolytic activity. During surgical procedures, the abdominal cavity is in most cases rinsed with normal saline solution, which may modify the fibrinolytic activity of the peritoneal mesothelium and predispose to formation of adhesions. The goal of our experiments was to evaluate how normal saline and other solutions affect the fibrinolytic properties of the peritoneal mesothelial cells. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Experiments

Body fluid changes during hypertonic lactated saline solution therapy for burn shock.

The body fluid changes of 12 burn patients treated with Hypertonic Lactate Saline solution (HLS group) were compared with 26 burn patients receiving isotonic therapy (iso Na group). 1) Total infusion volume during the first 48 hours postburn in the HLS group was only one-half to two-thirds of that in the iso Na group, although the sodium loads were nearly equal. 2) HLS therapy maintained sufficient functional extracellular fluid volume (f-ECFV) in the shock period and protected the excess increase of f-ECFV in the postresuscitative period, in contradistinction to the iso Na group. Normal saline versus lower-chloride solutions for kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The ideal intravenous fluid for kidney transplantation has not been defined, despite the common use of normal saline during the peri-operative period. The high chloride content of normal saline is associated with an increased risk of hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis, which may in turn increase the risk of hyperkalaemia and delayed graft function. Balanced electrolyte solutions have a lower chloride content which may decrease this risk and avoid the need for dialysis due to hyperkalaemia in the immediate post-transplant period. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) addressing this i

Drainage of the subretinal fluid and injection of saline solution into the vitreous body.

In a group of 250 cases operated upon for retinal detachment, drainage of the subretinal fluid was carried out in 96%. Since in 54 cases, i.e. 22%, a large quantity of subretinal fluid was evacuated, saline solution was injected into the vitreous. The following complications due to drainage were noted: intraocular haemorrhages (16%), incarceration of the retina (1%) and temporary iridocyclitis (2%). None of these complications prevented reattachment. In 54 cases in which injection of saline solution into the vitreous was carried out, we have noted: temporary occlusion of the central retinal ar
