Saprolegnia parasitica, the causative agent of saprolegniosis in fish, and Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of crayfish plague, are oomycete pathogens that cause economic losses in aquaculture. Since toxic chemicals are currently used to control them, we aimed to investigate their inhibition by essential oils of sage, rosemary, and bay laurel as environmentally acceptable alternatives. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that the essential oils tested were rich in bioactive volatiles, mainly monoterpenes. Mycelium and zoospores of A. astaci were more sensitive c

(1-->3)-beta-D-Glucans are major components of the cell walls of Oomycetes and as such they play an essential role in the morphogenesis and growth of these microorganisms. Despite the biological importance of (1-->3)-beta-D-glucans, their mechanisms of biosynthesis are poorly understood. Previous studies on (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan synthases from Saprolegnia monoica have shown that three protein bands of an apparent molecular weight of 34, 48 and 50 kDa co-purify with enzyme activity. However, none of the corresponding proteins have been identified. Here we have identified, purified, sequenced an

AIMS: This study aims to assess the antimicrobial activity of sponges from Lembeh Strait, explore their prokaryotic diversity, and investigate correlations between sponge antimicrobial activities and their associated prokaryotic communities.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Secondary metabolites were extracted from sixty two sponge tissues using MeOH: EtOAc as solvent (1:1). Antimicrobial activity of the sponge crude extracts was tested against Escherichia coli, Aeromonas salmonicida, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus simulans, Saprolegnia parasitica, and Candida oleophila. The strongest antimicrobial ac

The marine Streptomyces harbor numerous biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) with exploitable potential. However, many secondary metabolites cannot be produced under laboratory conditions. Co-culture strategies of marine microorganisms have yielded novel natural products with diverse biological activities. In this study, we explored the metabolic profiles of co-cultures involving Streptomyces sp. 2-85 and Cladosporium sp. 3-22-derived from marine sponges. Combining Global Natural Products Social (GNPS) Molecular Networking analysis with natural product database mining, 35 potential antimicrobial

Bacillus strains isolated from soil or channel catfish intestine were screened for their antagonism against Edwardsiella ictaluri and Aeromonas hydrophila, the causative agents of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) and motile aeromonad septicaemia (MAS), respectively. Twenty one strains were selected and their antagonistic activity against other aquatic pathogens was also tested. Each of the top 21 strains expressed antagonistic activity against multiple aquatic bacterial pathogens including Edwardsiella tarda, Streptococcus iniae, Yersinia ruckeri, Flavobacterium columnare, and/or the oomyce

Aubria subsigillata (Dumeril 1856) is a frog under increasing threat that is intensely harvested by Beninese people. The aim of this study was to develop a captive breeding program to repopulate the natural habitat of frogs in Benin Republic in view to conserve anuran biodiversity. The methodology adopted consisted of combining broodstock not injected with ovulin (hCG) in netted cages (natural reproduction) and broodstock injected with ovulin in tanks (assisted reproduction). In vitro fertilization of unfertilized female eggs by male milt was also carried out (controlled reproduction). In natu

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered alternatives to classical antibiotics and may become an excellent candidate for tackling antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture. Designing novel antimicrobial peptides for curbing antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture is paramount in one health approach. In this study, a short and compositionally simple peptide, KK16, was designed. KK16 is amphipathic with a net charge of + 6. Molecular docking results revealed that KK16 has a strong affinity towards two virulence proteins of Aeromonas sobria; aerolysin and outer membrane protein (omp). The pepti

Bangladesh's fisheries sector, central to national nutrition, food security, and rural livelihoods, is increasingly threatened by the convergence of zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and environmental degradation. Using a One Health framework, this review synthesizes evidence from 87 peer-reviewed articles, institutional reports, and regional studies to demonstrate how interactions among aquatic ecosystems, farmed and wild fish populations, and human communities drive the emergence and transmission of disease. Zoonotic parasites including trematodes, cestodes, nematodes, and

BACKGROUND: The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci is regarded as the causative agent of crayfish plague and represents an evident hazard for European crayfish species. Native crayfish populations infected with this pathogen suffer up to 100% mortality. The existence of multiple transmission paths necessitates the development of a reliable, robust and efficient test to detect the pathogen. Currently, A. astaci is diagnosed by a PCR-based assay that suffers from cross-reactivity to other species. We developed an alternative closed-tube assay for A. astaci, which achieves robustness through simultaneou

Marine macroalgae, microalgae, and associated microorganisms are increasingly recognised as valuable sources of bioactive compounds with applications across biotechnology and health. The environmental and ecological conditions they inhabit shape their metabolite diversity, leading to the production of high-value compounds such as sulphated polysaccharides, lipids, pigments, phenolics, and peptides. These compounds exhibit conserved biological activities that underpin potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and pro-regenerative effects with strong potential for translation. Although e
