"Without handicap": issues of medical schools and physically disabled students.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that access to education not be denied simply on the basis of disability. The law requires definition of "basic qualifications" required of all applicants, "essential elements" of the curriculum, and whether accommodation would alter the "fundamental nature" of the learning experience or impose "undue burden." Medical schools have a very low proportion of physically disabled students, which the author argues is largely a result of schools' conception of the "undifferentiated graduate" as being capable of performing the history, physical exam

One-Day Radiation Oncology Course for Medical Students from Medical Schools Without Affiliated Radiotherapy Centers.

Exposure to radiation oncology is limited for students at medical schools without affiliated radiotherapy centers. To address this barrier, a university-based radiation oncology division delivered a one-day radiation oncology course to medical students from medical schools without radiotherapy facilities. The course included lectures that covered the basic principles of radiotherapy, followed by a department visit to observe external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy workflows. A self-evaluated questionnaire was distributed upon completion of the course to evaluate the course format and

[Medical certificates for physical education in schools; the situation in Geneva].

The sedentarisation of youth is a major public health issue. Much hope has been placed on school physical education (PE) as a source of regular physical activity and to promote an active life style. A trans-disciplinary group counted the number of medical certificates in secondary school (11339 students), modified the existing excuse form, and generated a debate about PE. In 2000-2001, 15% of students (1688) presented medical certificates: 48% were for >3 months to one year, among which 75% were girls. The proportion of medical certificates varied from school to school (2,3 to 15%). A new form

Tobacco intervention training: current efforts and gaps in US medical schools.

CONTEXT: Research has documented that US medical schools inadequately teach tobacco intervention skills. OBJECTIVE: To examine effective training methods for tobacco intervention in undergraduate medical education. DATA SOURCES: Using indexing terms related to tobacco intervention and medical education, we searched MEDLINE (1966-June 2002) and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (through issue 2, 2002). Reference lists of relevant articles were also read to identify additional articles. Because of their importance to tobacco intervention, we also reviewed Ockene and colleagues' tobac

Substance use by fourth-year students at 13 U.S. medical schools.

Fourth-year medical students at 13 medical schools in different regions of the United States received an anonymous questionnaire designed to examine their current and prior use of 11 substances and their attitudes toward substance use among physicians. Of 1,427 questionnaires distributed, 41 percent were returned. The questionnaire and distribution method were derived from an ongoing survey on drug use in order to permit comparison of the medical students with a national sample of age- and sex-matched cohorts. The rates of substance use during the 30 days preceding receipt of the questionnaire

The contribution of Caribbean medical schools to the U.S. physician workforce.

PURPOSE: The physician shortfall in the U.S. has given rise to increasing reliance on international medical school graduates (IMGs), including those graduating from what are referred to as off-shore Caribbean medical schools. These schools, which offer instruction in English, draw primarily on U.S. and Canadian citizens while affording students clinical training opportunities in the U.S. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the magnitude and nature of the contribution being made by Caribbean medical schools to the U.S. physician workforce. METHOD: Off-shore Caribbean medical s

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Training among Medical Schools in the United States.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to be an effective method of HIV prevention for men who have sex with-men (MSM) and -transgender women (MSTGWs), serodiscordant couples, and injection drug users; however fewer than 50 000 individuals currently take this regimen. Knowledge of PrEP is low among healthcare providers and much of this lack of knowledge stems from the lack or exposure to PrEP in medical school. We conducted a cross sectional survey of medical schools in the United States to assess the degree to which PrEP for HIV prevention is taught. The survey consisted Likert scale

A Scoping Review of Assessments in Undergraduate Medical Education: Implications for Residency Programs and Medical Schools.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment at medical schools plays a crucial role by providing feedback, monitoring student promotion, and informing resident selection. Limited research has been conducted to synthesize key features of assessments, and even less is known about how these studies sought validity and reliability evidence. A scoping review was performed to explore key features of assessments and their validity and reliability evidence. METHODS: Various databases were searched ranging from 2004 to April 2021 following PRISMA guidelines. In-depth reviews of the full text were performed on all selected

Headaches in medical school students.

Medical students of the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas 'Abel Salazar' at the University of Oporto were interviewed using a structured headache questionnaire in order to assess the prevalence and characteristics of headaches in a young adult university population. This was the first population-based study of headaches in Portugal. 491 students were questioned. The parameters evaluated included age, sex, headache characteristics (frequency, localization, severity, duration), premonitory and associated symptoms and family history. Headaches were classified using the Ad Hoc Committee (1962) and

Resident-focused trauma-informed medical education policies: an environmental scan of Canadian medical schools and partner organizations.

BACKGROUND: Psychological trauma among resident physicians (residents) is common yet underrecognized, even though it can significantly impact learning, patient care, and well-being. Trauma-informed approaches are one way in which trauma can be mitigated. The purpose of this study was to examine institutional policies related to resident-focused trauma-informed medical education (RF-TIME) at Canadian institutions involved in providing and governing physician training. METHODS: We conducted an environmental scan of publicly available online content related to RF-TIME at Canadian medical schools

Curricular Interventions in Medical Schools: Maximizing Community Engagement Through Communities of Practice.

This article explains the importance of a communities of practice (CoP) model for continually aligning medical education and clinical transformation with contemporary health issues. It describes the evolution and advantages of using CoP as a model for transforming medical education and clinical practice and applies the CoP methodology to addressing the changing needs of socially vulnerable populations (LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning], persons experiencing homelessness, and migrant farm workers). In conclusion, this article describes CoP-led activities, achiev

An Evaluation of US Medical Schools' Reproductive Health and Family Planning Curricula.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Knowledge and competency in the topics of reproductive health and family planning are important for primary care physicians. Given the high rates of unintended pregnancy, increasing rates of infertility and other gynecologic conditions, it is important for medical students, many of whom will become primary care physicians, to receive good foundational knowledge of reproductive health topics. The objective of this research project was to investigate the current curricula at US medical schools to determine the breadth and extent of education that medical students recei

Cigarette smoking knowledge and perceptions among students in four Italian medical schools.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of premature death in the developed world. Advice and assistance by physicians help smokers quit, but little attention has been paid to the topic of tobacco dependence in the curricula of Italian medical schools. Consequently, few physicians follow the clinical practice guidelines for treating dependence. METHODS: This study was conducted on 439 students at 4 Italian medical schools in 2010. Students were asked to complete a 60-item questionnaire. Two scores were computed: Score 1 assessed knowledge of the epidemiology of smoking, risks assoc

Contemporary Step 1 Predictive Methods Across 12 US MD-Granting Medical Schools.

Since the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scoring transitioned from reporting numerical scores to reporting only pass or fail in 2022, the national first-time Step 1 failure rate has increased. In this shifting educational landscape, students require more detailed guidance to reach their Step 1 goals. Ideally, this would be based on data-driven methods for identifying students at-risk for failing Step 1, leveraging data to support student success. However, developing methods to identify at-risk students early enough for personalized interventions to be put in place c

Multivariable analysis of factors associated with USMLE scores across U.S. medical schools.

BACKGROUND: Gauging medical education quality has always remained challenging. Many studies have examined predictors of standardized exam performance; however, data sets do not distinguish by institution or curriculum. Our objective is to present a summary of variables associated with the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores, and thus identify institutions (and therefore curriculums) which deviate from trend lines by producing higher USMLE scores despite having lower entrance grade point averages and medical college admissions test (MCAT) scores. METHODS: Data was obtain
